Volume 17 Chapter 29 The Day The Kingdoms Fell I

Deeta and Cyril walked deeper into the place called The Heart of the Stars.

They had heard about it from Goldred before.

The Heart of the Stars had many layers, and to gain true power, they needed to pass through each one and reach the bottom.

But something even stronger than gods or the Demon King stood in their way—

The Arch Legion.

"Heh, it kind of feels like a school trip."

 Cyril said, sounding calm.

Just a few minutes earlier, they had faced Flora, the one who held the Barrier. But now, they were inside this dungeon without warning. They had been sent here all of a sudden.

 They didn't know why.

Flora was no longer around. So they figured they must have been split up and sent to different places.

There were still many things they didn't understand. But since they were here now, they had only one thing to do.

"Let's head for the bottom together."

 "Yes, Deeta."

 Cyril nodded.

"Well... I guess we don't have to pretend to be rivals anymore," Deeta said.

In the beginning, the ones who held the Heaven's Legacy had teamed up to find The Heart of the Stars. But in the end, only one person could reach the deepest part and gain its power. That meant their group was only temporary.

Once someone found the way to The Heart of the Stars, they would stop being friends and turn into rivals.

 They had always known that.

Since neither Deeta nor Cyril knew how to get in or where to go, they had needed help. But now, they were already inside. So the act was over.

"Now we just have to reach our goal."

"If either one of us makes it to the end—"

"Then the kingdom still has a chance to come back."

Deeta said. Her voice was full of strength.

"No. I'll make sure it does."

 "...I see."

 Cyril gave a small nod.

"Honestly, I think everyone knew all along. That we were helping each other."

 "That's true."

Cyril said with a tired smile.

"We always said we were working together to reach The Heart of the Stars. But we both knew we'd throw the others aside if needed. Me and Deeta both acted like that. Still... the truth is, we've always been on the same side. Anyone could see that."

"I thought I was hiding it well, but—"

 "There's no way that's true."

 "Really?"

 "Of course."

 Cyril let out a sigh.

"Deeta, you're kind of slow sometimes, you know that? Same as before."

 "I haven't changed."

Deeta said with a small smile.

 "You haven't either, right?"

 "I..."

 Cyril shook her head.

"What do you think? Aren't we different from how we were back then?"

Her face looked darker, as if the light had gone out.

"No, we really have changed. Even you, Deeta."

 Cyril stared right at her.

"You're not the queen you used to be."

 "...!"

"But that's all right. We've both changed, because we chose to. To protect what really matters."

"That's right. Something we can't ever lose—"

 Something they must protect.

 Something they must take back.

The two of them kept walking, step by step, through The Heart of the Stars.

Their goal was the deepest part.

 The road was still long.

 "...Even so, we're getting closer."

 That thought gave Deeta hope.

"We've finally made it," she said to herself. "We've come this far—"

 It had been so long.

Five years had passed, but it felt like forever.

Long ago, the Kingdom of Clishe had been at peace, with Deeta—Queen Eshaldeeta—ruling over it.

It wasn't a powerful country, but the people were happy. Watching over them had made her happy too.

For defense, she had trusted Cyril, the royal guard captain. There were other strong warriors who trained every day to protect the land.

Everyone believed Clishe's peace would last forever.

 Until that day—

 The day everything fell apart.

About five years ago, Clishe hosted a martial arts tournament. Fighters came from all over—knights, mages, and wandering warriors.

They came to test their strength.

And among them was a man with a sword.

He was stronger than anyone else.
