Volume 2 Chapter 1 This is Supposed to be Prologue

A man kicks a bicycle placed on the sidewalk and starts running. He's an average middle-aged man dressed in a worn-out suit, seemingly running desperately away from something.

In fact, he was being pursued.

 "Haa... Haa..."

The moon is hidden behind clouds, and the dimly lit back alley has poor visibility with many twists and turns. While the man fleeing frequently collides with obstacles, it should be equally challenging for his pursuers.

He has been running for quite some time now. Perhaps, his pursuers have given up by now.

Just as he thought so, a sudden "thud" pierced through the man's shoulder. Even in the darkness, you could see the red blood splattering, and the man quickly regained his balance from the verge of falling.

However, the pursuit's attacks didn't end there. With a continuous sound of slicing through the air, the man was relentlessly assaulted one after another.

 "D*mn it!"

The man muttered curses as he resumed running. Blood splattered from various parts of his body, causing him to stagger with each step.

And finally, the man's path was blocked by a wall. Running around in an unfamiliar place would eventually lead to this outcome.

Tap, tap. The echoing sound of the Grim Reaper's footsteps approached from behind. A soprano voice, incongruously clear, was directed at the man.

"Aren't you tired of playing hide and seek by now? It's becoming quite tedious."

Clouds drifted with the wind, and the moonlight illuminated the narrow alley. Under the light stood a girl with lavender-colored hair, loosely curled. Floating amidst her white skin and the black shadows was an enchanting figure draped in a gothic dress.

She appeared to be around twenty years old, beautiful, with a certain allure that could drive people mad. Amidst her striking appearance, her deep navy eyes pierced through the man.

At first glance, her appearance was extraordinary, but there was no immediate threat like a grown-up man cornered. However, in the girl's hands were objects that didn't match her elegant appearance.

 Silver-shining, revolving six-shooter handguns.

The barrels were thick, and the sheer size of the guns made them seem like blunt weapons.

 "Wait, please wait."

"I have no intention of listening to your pleas. Die quickly without futile resistance."

The girl responded dismissively and held her gun ready.

But the man, covered in blood and wounds, shouted.

"No, this is insane! Why would a monster like you want to kill me? What have I done?"

He screamed to survive this situation at all costs.

The girl's answer was quite simple.

Bang! A heavy explosion resounded in the alley.

"You didn't hear me, did you? I had no intention of listening to your pleas."

The girl's bullet pierced the man's forehead, crushing his brain and blowing off the back of his head. As blood and brain matter splattered, the man's body collapsed backward.

Amidst the silence, the girl muttered quietly.

"Honestly, calling someone a monster... you said it so well."

The twin guns slowly rose, and her fingers on the triggers were filled with determination.

"The real 'monster' is... getting quite good at imitating humans."

Immediately after, a transformation occurred in the man's lifeless body. Something wriggled beneath his suit, and his body, which should have ceased all signs of life, unnaturally rose.

The face directed at the girl was no longer human. More precisely, due to forcibly closing the hole in his head, his facial features were distorted.

Uttering incomprehensible sounds from his mouth, the man's body seemed to be drawn toward the girl with all four limbs, as if it had always been that way.

The transformed man, now an abomination, closed the distance and lunged at the girl with outstretched, muscular limbs.

In response, the twin guns clutched in the girl's hands roared. Gunfire overlapped continuously, and with each shot, the bullet chamber rotated. The man's body was torn apart, and the alley's walls sparkled and shattered as if set on fire.

Bang, bang, bang, bang! The bullets turned into a torrential downpour, striking through the man. They blew off his arm, created a massive hole in his abdomen, and crushed his head. The girl's gunfire ceased when the man's body had become nothing more than a collection of flesh and fragments.

The once man would never move again. These pieces of flesh would eventually disappear without a trace. The girl had learned that they were such entities in the past half-month of battles.

 "...Now then."

After confirming the man's complete dead, the girl kicked the wall of the alley and leaped into the air. She arrived on the rooftop of a building, standing on the edge, overlooking the city's nighttime scenery. Her deep navy eyes shine like a moonlit water surface as they scanned the city, searching for something.

 And then, she found it.

A definite golden trail leading to "her."

With a complex expression that seemed to chew on various thoughts, the girl spoke to no one in particular.

"I've finally found you... Lost Saint!"
