Volume 5 Chapter 71 Interlude - A Day With Some Childhood Friends
On the first day of the Souten Festival, the Literature Club, to which Yuusuke and his friends belong, opened a cafe called "Taisho Literature Cafe".
It was a so-called concept cafe that provided various menus in a Taisho-era style, with both men and women wearing Hakama.
Two people, a man and a woman, entered the crowded cafe.
They stood out in appearance. The man was a tough-looking boy with blonde hair and multiple piercings, and his sharp, slanted eyes gleamed.
The other person was a girl with cat-like eyes and mesh in her purple hair. Her slender arms and legs, visible from her flashy long t-shirt and shorts, looked like they could break easily.
When the girl, Kishijou Saki, sat down on a chair, she whispered,
"This is the place where Isumi Tsukiko is, right?"
"Yeah, I guess so. I can't really imagine what Isumi-san looks like when she's serving customers."
The one who replied was Udoo Shinri. He was a rookie Anti-Demon Official who participated in the summer training.
While the other Anti-Demon Officials were busy chasing after magic coins, the two students with little experience often had days off.
Today, they decided to make use of their day off and came all the way to the university cultural festival where Tsukiko was.
There was one reason.
"I'm going to find Isumi Tsukiko's weakness today. I will never forget that humiliation from that summer."
Saki said in an anger tone. Flames could be seen burning behind her.
Seeing this, Shinri just sighed.
"What humiliation? If Isumi-san hadn't been there at that time, the mission would have failed. We might have all died."
"That's that, and this is this!"
"They're all the same."
"What?! Are you taking her side, Shinri?"
Shinri let out a suppressed sigh, thinking it was troublesome. Saki's pride was sky-high. She could even rival the Skytree.
She could never admit that the person she once recognized as a rival was now overwhelmingly superior. Even if she understood it deep down in her heart.
Saki was not stupid. She was just stubborn and proud.
Shinri, who was forced to go along with her, was not happy about it.
But since they came all the way here, they might as well enjoy themselves. Shinri changed his mindset and looked around the cafe. The big sisters in Hakama made him feel uplifted just by looking at them.
Despite his delinquent appearance, he was genuinely interested in women. In fact, he was especially attracted to women who were understanding because he was usually being manipulated by his monster childhood friend.
Being a university student is definitely different from being a high school student.
"What are you looking at?"
Saki stared at her childhood friend with a sultry gaze.
"Nothing."
"Hmph, so you're just another boob man. As long as they have big boobs, anything goes for you, right?"
"What are you talking about? I don't care about chest."
It's just a little bit. Shinri and Saki are both in their third year of high school and their physical growth shouldn't have changed much compared to college students.
When Shinri glanced at Saki, all he could say was that her bulge, pushed up by her T-shirt, was modestly hidden.
"Hmm..."
"I've decided, I'm going to kill you."
"At least come back when you're a B cup."
"I'll seriously kill you now, okay?"
Saki's eyes went blank and she opened her mouth. Her magic is called "Senshu Kagura (Thousand Verses Kagura Dance)". It's a form of using magic power to turn songs into weapons. If she wanted to, she could launch an attack right now and blow Shinri away.
Shinri thought he had to apologize for teasing too much, but then, Saki's movements suddenly stopped.
Her eyes were looking beyond Shinri.
"What's wrong?"
"He's cool..."
"Huh?"
When Shinri turned around, there was a red-haired man serving as a waiter. With his trained physique visible even through his hakama, and his handsome face showing a hint of wildness.
He was out of place for a college student.
"So that's your type, huh?"
"Huh? No matter who sees him, he's super cool! I wish he would come over to our table."
Saki had completely forgotten about her original purpose and was staring at the red-haired man with heart-shaped eyes.
She's making a strange face.
Well, as long as her anger has subsided, that's good. Shinri thought. After all, he wouldn't want Saki to like him, but still, she does have a good appearance. However, if it's a college student, it's unlikely to progress into a serious relationship.
As they sat back down with relief, a waiter approached.
"I apologize for the wait."
The waiter placed a glass of water on the table. But then, Shinri suddenly realized that he hadn't checked the menu.
"Um, could you call that person with the red hair over there?"
However as Shinri reached for the menu, Saki narrowed her eyes and asked so.
"Idiot. Don't cause too much trouble."
"I'm sorry, dear customers. If that's alright with you, we can always call him for you, but it's a little difficult."
"Just a little bit. Come on, it'll be fine."
Saki persisted. It's really rare for her to be so fixated on a guy.
"Hey, cut it out."
As Shinri said that, he raised his head. Whether he was about to apologize to the waiter or about to do something himself, his entire face was blown away in an instant when he saw it.
"Ah——"
"Huh?"
The person looking down at them had sanpaku eyes. Compared to the red-haired guy earlier, his face didn't have any remarkable features and would be considered a typical college student at first glance.
But Shinri recognized that face.
There's no way he could forget.
"That's why——"
"!"
Shinri immediately leaned forward and forcefully lowered Saki's head. It seemed like her forehead hit the table, and there was a dull sound.
"Ouch!"
Ignoring Saki's voice, Shinri also lowered his head.
"I'm really sorry. We'll leave the store right away to apologize for causing trouble. I'm really sorry."
"Oh, no, you don't have to go that far. Is your companion okay? It made a loud noise."
"There's no problem. She has a hard head, so sometimes it needs to be softened."
"Like a mental exercise for the head⁉"
The man who said that stared at Shinri's face.
"By the way, where have I seen you before——"
"I'm sorry!"
Shinri carried the groaning Saki and left the store without looking back.
Why is he here?
He still remembers that day during the new employee training. The swordsman who Shinri and Saki couldn't even touch, he defeated with one blow.
That man was serving at the store. Shinri wants to praise himself for not screaming.
"Haa..."
Once they were far enough away, Shinri let out a breath. He can't believe he goes to the same university as Isumi-san. He said it was because of the youkai sword back then, but now he can't help but feel a sense of destiny.
Anyway, it's better to stay away from danger.
Let's not come to this university again. Shinri vowed in his heart.
"Shinriii?"
Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Before leaving the university, he needed to fix the mood of his childhood friend.
In the end, Shinri spent the day as Saki's wallet, going to various food stalls.
