Volume 6 Chapter 17 Earth And Another World

Volume 6 Chapter 17 Earth And Another World

"Since we have the opportunity, should I teach you a little about our magic?"

 "Is it okay?"

"We still have time until we arrive. In return, I also want to hear about Asteris's magic."

If that's all, it's a small favor. But Asteris's magic is not based on theory, but on intuition. To be honest, the way it is used and activated varies from person to person, so I don't know how valuable it is.

"Well, I want you to tell me, but who teaches magic on Earth? It's kept secret socially, right?"

"That's right. We try not to bring it to the surface as much as possible. There are various places to learn magic, but there are generally two types of people who become magicians. First, those who are born into a magician's lineage and naturally become one. And the other is someone who has somehow encountered the supernatural or magic and accidentally developed talent as a magician."

"So there are people who become magicians by accident."

It's too pitiful to have to enter the world of magicians after being involved with youkai and all that. Well, I can't say anything because I've also experienced unjustified hardships.

Yotsuji nodded with a complicated expression.

"Yeah, it's like an accident. Nobody realizes they have the talent until they're involved. Those with talent usually end up learning magic from a mentor."

 "A mentor?"

"If you're born into a family of magicians, it's usually your parents or older siblings who teach you. If not, there should be educational institutions for magicians within the Anti-Demon Special Forces."

"I see. I thought the world of magicians was more exclusive."

"That perception isn't entirely wrong. Under the artificial white nights, the beings of constant darkness can't survive. So, increasing the number of magicians thoughtlessly is synonymous with creating supernatural entities."

When they put it in such complicated terms, it's hard to understand. In essence, it seems that increasing the number of magicians in this scientific world has significant drawbacks. I've experienced it myself; if you're too aware of magic, you start seeing things you're better off not seeing.

The current society probably has a good balance, I suppose. Judging by the darkness of the Anti-Demon Special Forces, it doesn't seem like there's a shortage of personnel, but that's a topic not to be touched upon.

"Anyway, what do these magic educational institutions teach? Like how to draw magic circles?"

"I've never attended them, so I'm not sure. To be honest, it might depend on what kind of magic the teaching instructor has mastered."

"I see. It's quite different from Asteris in that regard."

"In a different world, do you learn different types of magic from your mentors?"

"Rather than different types of magic, it's more like inherently different or, in fact, unique to each person. Magic is the manifestation of one's soul, and it's as diverse as individuals themselves. Just like there are no identical people, there are no identical magics."

Whether it's "My True Name" or Lisha's 'Sanctuary,' they are different from magic.

Yotsuji is tilting her head with a puzzled expression. I hope she understood that.

"Asteris' magic is the embodiment of individuality. Talent, personality, environment. They all shape the person and manifest in their magic. That's why it's rarely the same as anyone else."

In reality, there are many magic spells with similar effects, like Glaive's 'Knight's Pride,' and it's not uncommon for families to pass down their own magic through bloodlines. However, they are similar only in name and not completely identical.

"Oh, that sounds fun and diverse."

"It's not just a world that can be summed up as fun, but I've certainly seen many interesting magic spells."

By the way, among the magic I've encountered, the ones I've genuinely envied are the invisibility magic and the clairvoyance magic. Well, in Asteris, where magic is an integral part of life, there are solid measures against magic crimes, so it's not easy to abuse them.

Of course, I would never use them for anything inappropriate. But there's something romantic about the idea of becoming transparent, which is why I get called pervert.

"There are also things a bit different from earth magic, like 'Kotodama,' which uses magic power for spoken words, or body enhancement, which anyone can use. And there are magic tools that utilize magic power, too; we have those over here."

"I see, it's quite similar in that regard."

"That's how it is in Asteris. How do people typically use Earth magic?"

Could it be that I might become capable of using magic too? Will I be able to use things like Omnyouji magic, rune magic, or ki, just like in manga? I'm getting excited about the possibilities.

Yotsuji took a card from her pocket and showed it to me.

"For example, this is a card I use for magic, but do you think you could use it if you channel your magic power?"

"It's like a magic tool, right? In that case, I might be able to use it."

"Why don't you give it a try?"

I try to flow magic power into the card that was handed to me. It seems that there is a magic circle inside. It would be impossible for an ordinary magician to flow magic power into this complex magic circle at first sight, but I am a former hero. This is a piece of cake.

 "Hmm?"

Strange, nothing is happening. Even though magic power should be flowing through it, it is not functioning as something meaningful. What's going on? Is this a defective item?

"Hahaha, it won't work. The magic we use is not for 'individuals' like you. The essence of magic is knowledge. Do you know it or not? Are you seeing it or not? Can you recognize it or not? That card is like a book. Even if you read the words correctly, if you don't understand the meaning, it cannot fulfill its role as a book."

Hmm, I kind of get it and kind of don't.

Yotsuji takes the card from my hand and flows magic power into it. Then, a whirlwind passes in front of me, creating an instant path.

"Because it's knowledge, there are rules there. The good thing about earth magic is that anyone can use it once they acquire the knowledge."

"Oh, I see. Then I can use it too."

"I think you can use it if you study, but whether it will be at a useful level or not is questionable."

What's this all about? I mean, I'd prefer not to study, but if I can use cool shikigami or something, I'm willing to put in the effort, like I did for exams.

"Let's see, on Earth, there are also two types of magicians. Most people gain knowledge and experience through effort and develop their own interpretations and variations. But occasionally, there are individuals who understand things on a different level, like 'why did it turn out this way,' who can see the essence of things at a glance."

"Ah, I know the type you're talking about."

They're like intuitive thinkers. When you try to teach those types of people, you end up with explanations full of incomprehensible onomatopoeia. Many of them are unaware of their differences from others.

For example, Eris is definitely one of them. As a result of learning magic from her, I realized that there are barriers I can't overcome with words.

I need to pay more attention to my surroundings. I'm not the world's standard.

As I silently nodded in agreement, Yotsuji casually said,

"You're definitely one of those people."

 "Huh?"

"People like that live by their own unique rules, so even if they learn universal magic knowledge, they often can't use it properly."

"Come on, cut it out. Do I really look like I'm living on intuition alone?"

"With regards to magic, without a doubt. I figured it out after just one match."

 ...What?

Yotsuji shrugged her shoulders in front of me who was shocked.

"These people often don't realize it themselves."

I couldn't deny it even though I wanted to. I think it should be a banned card.

"From what I've heard, it seems like your approach to magic and how you use it is entirely different. I've learned a lot from this conversation."

Unable to complain to the cheerful Yotsuji, I simply nodded in silence.
