Volume 3 Chapter 4 Naming
When we got back home, Toxy and Sandra were watching over a dragon egg. They were wrapping it in cloth and trying to keep it warm as much as possible.
Toxy noticed us as we opened the front door.
"Welcome back! Did you both buy the collar?"
"Yeah, we did, Toxy. They were quite cheap."
"Oh, really? How much?"
"Five big silver coins."
"I see. Wade, you won't be running errands alone anymore, huh?"
Isn't my credibility dropping rapidly? Is it okay?
"Ice-chan, is it okay in terms of market value?"
"It's fine... If we negotiate hard, we might get a discount, but since we'll probably go there again in the future, we bought it at the asking price to show gratitude."
"You really are a merchant's daughter. Your negotiation skills are advanced and hard to understand."
We sat on the chairs around the large table where the dragon egg was placed.
Then Sandra spoke to me.
"Good job, Wade. Running errands is a very difficult challenge, and you've overcome it well."
"Um, if Toxy said it, she's definitely making fun of me, but if it's Sandra, I'm not sure which one it is."
"Wait a minute."
Toxy frowned and looked at me. Sandra continued.
"If it were me, I probably would have changed my mind halfway and spent all the money on snacks."
"Everyone, let's make sure not to give Sandra a large amount of money. Even with the current surplus, it would lead to bankruptcy."
""Understood.""
"Hey, I also want a little pocket money..."
Sandra looked surprised, but upon hearing the declaration of turning several million yen worth of money into snacks, we couldn't give money to Sandra.
Toxy reassured her.
"Don't worry, Sandra. I'll give you ten copper coins every month."
"Yay!"
Sandra was delighted with the amount equivalent to 3,000 yen. It's hard to believe she's the oldest in our party next to Clay.
"So, did you see the dragon egg? How does it look?"
"It has started moving a bit. I was holding and warming it up until a while ago, but it's quite heavy so I got tired."
"I've warmed it up quite a bit too, so now we're wrapping it in a cloth and pretending everything's fine with tea."
"Let me warm it up too."
I hold the egg that Toxy handed me, it's really big when I hold it again. It's so big that it could fit a small kid, not just a baby.
I hold it with both arms and ask,
"So, what about the milk and meat?"
"I've bought a lot of them. I managed to buy them cheaply, so don't worry."
Toxy said with a smug look. Sandra follows up.
"We've stored them in the warehouse in tens of kilos each. I asked Alex about the quantity, so it's appropriate. I also bought some good meat for us."
"Oh, that's great. Ice, your cooking is so delicious, it's actually my daily pleasure."
As I smile, Ice smiles back and says, "I'm glad you're happy..."
Clay came back just then and said, "Oh, everyone's here."
"You're back. By the way, what were you doing today, Clay? You were talking to Alex, right?"
"Huh? Oh, it's about investment."
What's this guy up to?
"Well, Alex-san told me about a good investment opportunity. I carefully considered it and made a deal. It's about one big gold coin. It will probably multiply without needing much time."
"...It sounds too good to be true, but when both of you (Clay and Alex) say it, it might actually work out."
"Yeah. Look forward to it, Wade-kun."
I thought at that moment that there was nothing scarier than Clay's confidence.
"By the way, about that investment opportunity..."
"..."
"Stop with the silent smile, Clay."
Well, I can't tell if Clay is falling for a risky deal or if Alex is setting us up for a loss. They'll probably come back with real gains.
Anyway, we're getting close to not having to work for the rest of our lives. Well, even if that's the case, it doesn't mean I'll quit being adventurers.
Deciding to temporarily forget about this matter, I cleared my throat once.
"Well, now that everyone's here, there's something I want to talk about. It's not really necessary, but since we've decided to keep it, I thought we should come up with a name for this dragon."
"Yeah. Well, if we're holding it so dearly, then it's necessary to give it a name, right?"
Upon Toxy's suggestion, I held the egg even more carefully.
"Since it's the name of my precious child, I want to give it a good name. I hope everyone will help."
"Wade, you're totally acting like a father now... Oh, but you exude such a paternal vibe, it's kind of nice...♡"
"Toxy, you're making a face like a female. Hey!"
"Sandra! Stop saying weird things! Geez!"
Toxy, with a red face, hit Sandra, who was holding her head.
And so, we decided to choose a name.
"Alright, following the rule of the person who suggests it first. So, I'll go first."
After a moment of silence, I announce the proposed name.
"Morgon."
There was a murmur among everyone.
"Huh, not good, everyone?"
"Well, um... I think it's cute for a pet, Wade-kun."
I see... it's not good if it's assumed to be born in a human form, as Clay pointed out. Then.
"...Should we name it with an image of a human in mind?"
"Is that okay?"
Sandra raised her hand at that moment. I gestured for her to speak.
"I mean, while it's true that this egg is currently surrounded by humans, it was originally retrieved from a wyvern's nest. It's uncertain whether it will adapt to a human form and be born in the next few days."
"That's... maybe true, Sandra-san. I thought I knew because it's famous, but I've never seen a real Metamorph Dragon before."
Ice said with a puzzled look. Looking at the expert Clay as well, I also pondered, "That's true..."
"Alright, should we name it after it's born? We don't even know if it's a boy or a girl. It might be a bit pitiful to give a cool name to a girl."
"That's true."
"Wade, your attachment to the egg is so high, it's funny."
After Ice's words, Sandra approaches, poking my cheek with the opposite cheek where I'm holding the egg.
"Then, I'll take care of it until it hatches. Let's think of a name together after it hatches."
"Um, Wade-kun, can I also help keep it warm?"
"...Sure."
"I think this might be the first time I've seen Wade-kun looking so dissatisfied."
Clay said with a surprised expression.
