Chapter 83 It'S Better Not To Be Found Out
'Ugh, it's noisy. Maybe I'll knock them out again...'
Sara was in a terrible mood, thinking such unsettling thoughts.
It's not easy to restrain over 100 people. The mercenaries who had been knocked out were slowly regaining consciousness, and the area was filled with an unbelievable racket, like it was the middle of the night.
She had taken a nap, but after staying up late last night, riding a horse for a long distance, and using large-scale magic continuously... it's no wonder she's sleepy after all that.
Just then, Baron Walt and the local militia arrived. Perhaps because they were used to doing this kind of work, they were much more efficient at restraining the mercenaries than the mansion's servants.
Baron was interrogating the mercenaries, accompanied by the boy from earlier. Occasionally, he would hit a struggling mercenary with his sword, still in its scabbard.
'Baron is a battle-hardened person, isn't he? The militia members also seem quite strong.'
After a while, Baron dragged a massive mercenary, about 2 meters tall (≈6.6 feet) and bear-like, in front of Robert and made him kneel.
"Sir Robert, it seems this person is the leader of the mercenaries."
"Hmm?"
"According to the other mercenaries' and the boy's testimonies, there's no mistake."
The boy standing nearby was nodding in agreement.
"Who is your employer?"
Even when Robert asked, the man remained silent.
"Well, you will be loyal to your employer until you get paid. But, you can't receive payment if you're dead, right?"
Robert kicked the mercenary's head, which was bowed down with both hands tied behind his back.
'Whoa, I didn't know uncle had this side.'
"Was your target those girls?"
Sara and Rebecca were the focus of his interrogation, his chin jutting out as he asked.
"Hmph. We couldn't fulfill our request because of that annoying fire. So, we thought we'd take the witches from Avalon instead. They're valuable just because they can use healing magic, but those 2 are ridiculously different, anyway."
The man floated a condescending smile as he alternately gazed at Sara and Rebecca.
"I was planning to take a taste before selling them off, but what a shame."
'Ew, gross. This old man is seriously disgusting.'
Sara felt a physiological sense of disgust at the man's words.
"We're invaders from another country. Naturally, you have a duty to hand us over to the country. You can't just execute us on your own until the country takes us in for questioning."
"Well, maybe so. What's the big deal?"
"But don't you guys have something to hide too? Like embezzlement, for instance?"
The man continued to speak, his smile growing more sarcastic.
"If we're taken in for questioning in the capital, we'll spill everything we know. Then it'll be you Grandchester folks who'll be in trouble, won't it? So why don't we make a deal? You pay us a little reward, and we'll let you off the hook. You guys can keep quiet about it."
"Hmm, that's a pretty generous offer, isn't it?"
"That's right! We get the reward we want, and you guys can avoid getting caught for embezzlement. It's a win-win deal, isn't it?"
"The point is, you mean you don't want to get caught?"
"That's it! If you understand, then release us! We'll make a deal for 10,000 Dallas, a ridiculously high price."
'Thieves are so bold, saying things like that.'
"Like Sir Robert said, 'it's all about not getting caught,' right? There was no attack from another country to begin with. You're just thieves who committed robbery in Grandchester territory."
"If you think we're the only ones attacking Grandchester, you're wrong."
Sara tilted her head, looking puzzled.
"I mean, isn't that obvious? Right now, Grandchester is on high alert, mobilizing its knights and local militias."
"Huh?"
"If you can only send in a pathetic mercenary group like you, then you shouldn't have even thought about invading in the first place."
"Hmph. Don't be ridiculous. You don't even know how many people are involved. You think you can suppress the entire region with just your own forces? What a joke."
Sara and Rebecca burst out laughing, their eyes sparkling with amusement. At a glance, they looked like 2 18-year-old girls chatting happily.
"Sophia, maybe these people are a bit dim-witted."
"That's right."
Rebecca thrust out both hands, palms up, and suddenly a large number of glowing orbs appeared in the air, swirling around her.
To Sara's eyes, it was as if numerous fairies were flying out one after another from the fairy path, but to others, it just looked like glowing orbs. After all, the fairies were emitting light to make themselves visible to ordinary humans.
Rebecca began to report the information she received from the fairies. Apparently, there were scattered mercenary groups and soldiers all over the region. The numbers were fewer than expected, with only around 500 people in total.
"This shouldn't be a problem for the knights and the militia alone."
"That's right."
The mercenary's face turned pale.
"W-wait, you're...?"
"Nice to meet you. I'm Rebecca Orson, the witch of Avalon who befriends fairies. You might know me from Roisen."
"No way... You're the 'woman who destroys men'?"
"Personally, I prefer 'the beauty who brings down a nation'."
Rebecca smiled sweetly.
"It's all because of you that I had to become a mercenary!"
"Are you a former vassal of the cleared-out Prince Adolf's household?"
"If you hadn't seduced Prince Adolf, I would still be a proud knight of Roisen!"
"Your accusations are quite unpleasant. I rejected him, and I never seduced him."
Rebecca's anger flared up. Sara couldn't stay silent either.
"But he's seeking a mistress who already has a fiancé? It seems like that prince's head and lower body are quite loose, don't you think. I can't help but feel sorry for the guy who serves him, but..."
"Are you looking down on me?"
"You can't even fulfill your employer's request, and you're trying to kidnap a woman for money? It seems like you don't know the concept of shame. A proud knight is appalled to hear this."
Sara's bad mood, worsened by lack of sleep, was quite intense.
"What a ridiculous woman talking back to a man like that! Know your place!"
'Ahah, it seems like his true nature has come out. This guy isn't just a mere mercenary, he knows a lot.'
"That way of speaking doesn't seem like a mere mercenary's. Sir Robert, I think we should interrogate him in the knight's order. He probably knows a lot."
"That's right. Let's do as Sophia says."
"Ugh..."
The man looked frustrated, twisting his face and biting his tongue, as if he wanted to commit suicide. But Sara quickly treated him and smiled brightly.
"Hehe, did you really think you could die that easily?"
Sara smiled just like Rebecca did earlier. The results of her training were perfect.
"By the way, you said something about a woman's habit of not knowing her place, right? You're the one who got knocked out without even touching that woman, got stripped naked, and couldn't even withstand a little humiliation. You're the one who revealed your true identity in a flash. That's the pride of a Roisen knight, huh? The mercenaries who trusted you will die in agony right in front of you. You can't even die with your own will. How pathetic. If that's what it means to be a noble, I'm glad I was born as a woman who doesn't know her place."
Sara cut the rope that bound the man using wind-attribute magic.
"I cut the rope, but what will you do now?"
Then, the man drew the sword at Baron's waist and charged at Sara. Sara cut off the man's right hand at the wrist and severed both his legs below the knee.
"Ggggaaaaah!"
The man collapsed, spewing out a massive amount of blood from his right hand and both feet. However, Sara effortlessly healed the man, restoring him to his original state.
"So, I told you that you can't die that easily, didn't I? Are you going to keep going?"
The man, who had collapsed in a miserable state, stood up and checked the condition of his hands and feet. Although there was still blood around him, his right hand and feet, which had been severed, were not on the ground because they had been used to reconstruct his body. The sword that had fallen at a distance was picked up by Baron and sheathed, etching the scene from earlier into the man's mind.
And with that, the man's spirit was crushed, and during the subsequent interrogation by the knights, he spilled all the information he knew.
By the way, the men around them were also intimidated by Sara, who had taken on Sophia's appearance, and began to call her "the woman who breaks men's hearts" or "the goddess of despair" behind her back.
This was Sara's own doing, so there was no helping it. She had clearly gone too far.
When Robert and Rebecca asked Sara later, "Why did you do that?" she replied,
"Uh...if I heal them, it's not a problem, right?"
Of course, Rebecca lectured her, saying, "Their heart won't heal, so it's a huge problem!"
