Chapter 121 The Goal Is Too High
After Rebecca left the training grounds, Sara and the others began their magic training under Thomas's guidance. Since they needed to improve their magic control accuracy until their bodies grew stronger, the 3 of them decided to train individually.
First, Sara tried maintaining a flame of the size she imagined next to Blaze.
'I don't know what to do... I'm not struggling at all... I can even cast different attribute magic with my right and left hands like a game.'
In Sara's line of sight, Scott started firing smaller flames to shorten the magic activation time.
"Scott, if you're going to rapid-fire, isn't that size just right?"
"Yeah, that size is faster to cast."
As Sara observed Scott's movements closely, she saw that he created flames at the tip of his fingers and then shot them towards the target.
"Hey Scott, if you can shoot flames like that, aren't you also using wind attribute magic?"
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"In my case, I create flames with fire attribute magic and then use wind attribute magic to shoot them far away. It's like this."
Sara created 3 small flames the size of Scott's and rapidly fired them towards the target using wind attribute magic, surpassing Scott's speed and accuracy.
"!?"
"To put it simply, I'm using wind to propel the flames. Maybe Scott is also using wind attribute magic without realizing it."
"Is that so?"
"When you combine multiple attributes, you can do things like this."
Sara created small pebbles with magic and shot them out from her palm to her fingertips, using wind attribute magic to propel them. The pebbles struck the target with great force. In reality, she could create and shoot the pebbles simultaneously, but she did it this way to make it clear for Scott.
"Whoa!"
Next to the astonished Scott, Blaze was staring with her eyes wide open, frozen in place.
"Are you that surprised?"
"I'm surprised!"
Blaze also silently nodded her head up and down, still in shock.
"Ms. Sara, ordinary people don't use original magic so easily..."
Thomas, who was watching from a distance, approached.
"But it's written in the magic textbook that imagination is crucial. In other words, if you can imagine it specifically, you can activate the magic, right?"
"That's right. Did Ms. Sara create the pebbles with magic too?"
"Yes, I did."
"Then can you shoot this out too?"
What Thomas took out was a thin metal plate he had created, shaped like an isosceles triangle with a sharp point.
"It's become more menacing than before. However, I think it'll be difficult since the surface area exposed to the wind is small."
"Ah, I see."
"But, I can do this, maybe."
Sara created multiple small metal fragments with pointed tips at a specific location on the floor, and then used a whirlwind to send them flying upwards. In just a few seconds, the target was destroyed and collapsed.
"Wow, this magic has quite a high killing potential. It might be useful in war, but it's better not to use it in hunting. The fur would get ruined."
Thomas made a researcher-like comment, but Scott and Blaze were frozen in place with their mouths agape, looking silly. Although they had just become brothers, their actions were already eerily similar. Sara called out to them.
"Hey, since I went to the trouble of showing off my original magic, can't you at least say it's cool?"
"No, Sara is definitely cool, but as a lady, that attack is... better left as a last resort... imagination-wise..."
"It's too scary."
It was a complete letdown.
"And, anyway, Scott, I wanted to say that it's better to try out wind attributes too."
"Sara, I know it's rude to ask, but can you tell me? How many attributes can you manifest?"
Scott asked Sara with a serious face. Behind him, Thomas was also listening intently.
"That question doesn't need an answer, Miss Rebecca said, but... it'll probably get exposed eventually, anyway. I know I'm being reckless, so..."
"I won't tell anyone else about Sara's secret, okay?"
"Of course, I'll keep Ms. Sara's secret too."
Blaze and Thomas agreed with Scott's statement.
"I have all the attributes. I think you've probably noticed, but I also have a lot of magical power."
"Ah, I finally understand what my father meant. There's no way I can beat Sara in anything except physical strength. Not in swordsmanship, not in studying, not in magic..."
"I don't think that's true, though..."
"No. It's only natural that a 13-year-old boy like me would be stronger than an 8-year-old girl, anyway."
'Oh no... did I hurt his feelings?'
As Sara looked worried, Scott patted her head and smiled.
"You don't have to comfort me. I know I'm losing to Sara right now, but I don't plan on staying a loser forever. And probably, I'd lose to Blaze in magic too. I can't create flames that can burn the hunting ground like Blaze can."
"Ah, but that's because I went on a magical rampage."
"If it's a normal magical rampage, it would be like this, with small flames flying around everywhere. Otherwise, it would just be a single pillar of fire burning quietly."
Scott created a small flame on his hand, the same size as the one he had aimed for initially, and then extinguished it.
"My magical control is probably better than Blaze's, but even that's not enough to beat Sara. Hey, Blaze, we brothers need to aim to surpass this little girl, don't we?"
"What? That's impossible, isn't it?"
"Don't give up from the start. Sure, she's a tough opponent, but if you're going to be a knight's son, you need to be a man who can protect women. It's embarrassing to be weaker than the one you're supposed to protect, isn't it?"
'Aww, are these two going to become my knight protectors? It's a dream scenario, but... it's too childish...'
As an 8-year-old girl, Sara shouldn't be thinking like that, but mentally, she's completely out of it.
"Hmm... So Scott and Blaze want to surpass Ms. Sara, huh? That's quite an ambitious goal, isn't it? Especially when it comes to studying..."
"Ugh..."
"Ugh, yeah..."
"I may not know much about swordsmanship, but I think I can help you guys out a bit with your studies and magic. However..."
"However?"
"Well, both of you should know that Ms. Sara is probably more skilled than me... or even the Academy's professors, for that matter."
"What?!?"
Thomas chuckled and glanced at the brothers.
"That's what it means to surpass someone, right? It's great to see students who aren't afraid of hard work. That's just amazing."
Scott and Blaze stared at Sara in awe. Sara, feeling their gaze, slightly tilted her head, created a human-shaped figure out of dirt near the previous target, and fired a flame bullet from her left hand and an ice arrow from her right hand at the figure.
After that, she turned back to the two brothers and smiled sweetly. Immediately after, the dirt figure crumbled away without a trace.
"What are we gonna do, Scott? I don't think I can win..."
"Don't worry, Blaze, I'm in the same boat."
Sara, seeing the brothers' reactions, called out to them.
"So, are you guys going to run away with your tails between your legs?"
"No way, absolutely not!"
"I don't want to lose either!"
"Then, you two should do your best, okay?"
'I thought Mister Thomas was teasing them, but it seems like I'm not the heroine, but the rival instead? And it's like a sports manga for boys or something'
"Ms. Sara, you shouldn't tease them that much. They might end up forcing themselves too hard and losing control of their magic."
Rebecca's voice suddenly came from behind. When Sara turned around, Robert had also entered the room with Rebecca. Upon closer inspection, Rebecca was wearing a sapphire ring on her finger.
"Ah! Uncle, you did it! Congratulations!"
"Well, I managed somehow..."
"Congratulations!"
As Sara rushed over to Rebecca and Robert, she noticed that Robert's clothes were stained with blood.
"Uncle, you have blood on your clothes. Did something happen?"
"Ah, that's my nosebleed!"
"Could it be that you're so happy you got a nosebleed?"
"No, I took Revi's right straight punch head-on."
"Huh?"
'Wait, is it a special rule in this world to get punched by your partner when proposing?'
Sara tilted her head, deep in thought, as Thomas and the others gathered around. Scott's sharp eyes caught sight of Rebecca's ring.
"Miss Rebecca, are you engaged to Sir Robert?"
"Ah, you know, don't you?"
"I'm from Grandchester too. Congratulations!"
Thomas also gazed at Rebecca's ring with interest.
"Congratulations on your engagement. Is that the famous Grandchester engagement ring? I heard you wear it on the left ring finger when getting married, right?"
"You know about the Grandchester family tradition, don't you, Mister Thomas?"
"Of course, I do. Lately, other families have been copying it, giving rings when proposing, I hear."
"Hmm, I didn't know that."
Blaze looked puzzled and asked Scott.
"So, to sum it up, Sir Robert proposed to Miss Rebecca while she was away from her seat and gave her the ring?"
"Yeah, that's right, Blaze. We'll give rings to our future partners when we propose too."
Scott explained to Blaze while glancing at Sara.
"That's how it is. Sir Robert, Miss Rebecca, congratulations... I wonder if Ms. Sophia will be getting married soon..."
"Uh, there are no plans for that yet, though."
Blaze muttered, and Sara quickly followed up.
"Hehe, thank you, everyone."
"Thanks for celebrating with us."
"By the way, Uncle, Miss Rebecca, have you reported to Grandfather yet?"
"Not yet. I'll tell him at dinner, though."
"You'll definitely get a long lecture, so go to the office right now. Miss Rebecca, you too."
'Probably not just Grandfather, but the whole castle is waiting!'
Sara forcibly chased Robert and Rebecca out of the training grounds.
"It's gotten to the point where we can't even train our magic properly anymore."
"Yeah, that's true. Let's just call it a day for now."
And so, the 4 of them decided to take a break and have some tea time on the terrace.
