Chapter 259 I Think, Therefore I Am

After the class wrapped up, Sara called out to the golem working in the library.

"I want to know where Mr. Paracelsus is. Where can I find that information?"

The golem retrieved some materials from a high shelf and handed them to Sara.

"It's written in the appendix of this document."

The title of the document was 'Considerations on Gods and Fairies.' Since it didn't seem very related to alchemy, Alicia probably hadn't checked it either.

'Gods, huh... If you're a reincarnator, you definitely think about that. I haven't met one, but I wonder if Mr. Paracelsus has?'

As she flipped through the pages, it seemed that Paracelsus had considered the concept of 'soul' after becoming interested in fairies. When he asked his fairy about souls, her fairy replied, "Fairies don't have souls, so I don't know."

Also, when he asked the fairy if it had ever met a god, the fairy answered, "Why do you ask such a thing when they are always there?"

'That sounds like a Zen riddle.'

As she continued reading, she came across a description of an experiment that made her feel a bit uneasy. It was about considering what would happen if healing magic was used to resurrect dead animals. Fortunately or unfortunately, it seemed that Paracelsus himself wasn't a user of healing magic, so he had to ask a friend who could use it.

That friend initially refused, saying it was blasphemy against the dead animals, but when Paracelsus mentioned it was about his deceased beloved horse, the friend reluctantly agreed to perform the resurrection magic.

The result was hard to call a success. The resurrection worked, and the horse stood up, but even when called like before, they didn't run over. They just wandered around and didn't run at all. They ended up not eating anything, not sleeping, and eventually died from weakness.

'...I will definitely not try any resurrection experiments.'

Paracelsus wrote this in the last appendix of the documents. Surprisingly, it was written in Avalon language, but the last sentence was mixed with Latin.

 ----

The fairies say that only the Creator God can create souls, but I don't think so. Sure, there are souls created by the Creator God of this world. However, this Creator God seems to be stealing souls from another world. These poor souls that are kidnapped seem to strongly impact the souls born in this world.

Of course, if the soul wanted to come to this world through conversation with the kidnapped souls (though I wonder if I should even call them that), then there wouldn't be any complaints. But at least I was brought here without permission. If the mugger who attacked me in my past life was a being intentionally moved by the Creator God of this world, then I will never forgive the Creator God. It's possible that even that mugger could be a victim.

I decided to ask the fairies to let me sleep quietly so that I wouldn't have any more impact on this world. I wonder how the god of this world will treat a soul that has given up being a stimulus to the souls here.

But at the same time, I have something that worries me. How will the souls that come after me see this world? If someone who can read this text appears, please wake me from my sleep. I am in a hidden basement of the botanical garden near the experimental facility, together with fairies.

If you tell the fairies in the botanical garden "cogito, ergo sum," the way will open up.

 ----

'Are you Descartes? Why Latin? If you're sleeping like the dead, wouldn't "memento mori" work too?'

However, even though Sara remembered the famous Latin saying from her past life, she wasn't in the mood to go see Paracelsus right away.

At that time, Paracelsus was supposed to have a wife and children. I heard that when he moved from the royal capital to Grandchester, the woman who became his wife followed him and settled down here. However, at Maiden's Tower, which was Paracelsus's laboratory, there was only a place for him to stay. There was no sign of a couple's bedroom, a wife's room, or a children's room at all. It seems that Paracelsus didn't return home much and left his family behind.

Paracelsus was supposed to look young because he received the blessings of the fairies, but he was still married to a wife who was much younger, like a grandfather and granddaughter difference in age. Despite that, Paracelsus locked himself in the laboratory, abandoning his wife and children, and in the end, he fell into a long sleep with the help of fairy powers.

'I think it's a problem between the people involved, but it feels a bit off. Leaving a young wife and child behind? Should I just ignore it and leave Mr. Paracelsus alone? By the way, is his wife still alive? Maybe I should decide what to do after I meet her.'

Sara approached Alicia, who was reading materials at the carrel, and spoke in a quiet voice.

"Hey, Alicia. Can we meet Mr. Paracelsus's wife?"

"Yes, we can. Sylvia loves having guests, so as long as we let her know in advance, she usually won't say no."

 "Sylvia?"

"If you call her 'grandma,' she'll get really angry. Everyone in the family and the neighbors call her Sylvia."

 "I, I see."

Sara stared at Alicia and whispered softly in her ear.

"Hey, if you could meet Paracelsus, would you want to?"
