Chapter 284 At The Edge Of The World

 Rustle, rustle, rustle...

The wind blew across the land where tall plants spread endlessly, their dark green leaves swaying like waves.

 'Hmm? Where is this?'

"It's not anywhere, but it's everywhere. This is a place where magic is born and returns. What you feel as the wind is the flow of magic."

Suddenly, a voice called out from behind me.

 "Huh."

"Hey, you're pretty calm. Wouldn't it be nice if you showed a bit more interest?"

"If someone said something confusing in a strange place, anyone would be shocked. I'm not even sure if you're human or not."

I slowly turned around to see a tall man with light blue hair standing there.

"So, what do you think when you look at me?"

"You don't seem human or fairy. You look really suspicious."

"That's a word often used by reincarnators from Earth, Japan. Am I the only one who wonders what 'suspicious' even means?"

"Probably most Japanese people don't know what it means, so it's fine. There are many theories about its origin."

 "Really?"

"Hey, don't you think you're accepting too many Japanese reincarnators? You're starting to sound Japanese too."

"Did that remind you of 'yourself'?"

"Not at all. But you're probably the god who reincarnates us, right?"

"Hmm. So let me ask you, can you remember 'your' name?"

"Of course! I'm... huh? I can't remember. Why??"

The man in front of me held out a shimmering, rainbow-colored ball.

"Just now, you dropped your memory, so I picked it up for you."

 "Oh, thank you."

As I reached out to grab the ball, the rainbow-colored ball suddenly disappeared.

 "Hey!"

"Sorry, sorry. I forgot our promise. Let me try again."

'Ugh, this guy is so annoying.'

Then, a golden ball appeared softly in front of me. It was a little smaller than the rainbow-colored ball.

"Is this the golden ball you dropped?"

"I don't think that's it since it's different from the one before."

Next to it, a silver ball floated up. This one was even smaller than the golden ball.

 "How about this silver ball?"

"I told you, I'm looking for the one that sparkles in many colors like a rainbow!"

Then a black ball appeared, swaying up and down gently. For some reason, this ball had an unclear shape, making it hard to tell its size. I could barely tell it was a sphere, but it kept moving.

 "Is this the black ball?"

"All of them are wrong!! Normally, you should give the right answer at the end. And seriously, do that kind of thing at the fountain, okay?"

"You're no fun. Well, whatever. By the way, the answer is all of them!"

As the guy waved his hand, the 3 balls started to spin in a circle and eventually merged into one. It was shining in rainbow colors again.

"I'll return it this time. It's yours, after all."

"I don't know... it's hard to just say 'thank you.'."

"You don't need to thank me. I'm the one who made you drop it."

'No way. This is super annoying.'

When I took the offered rainbow ball, it smoothly got absorbed into my body and disappeared.

"Oh, I remembered. I'm Sara. Wait, Sarasa? Which is it?"

"Both are you. I organized it a bit when I split it earlier, but maybe it wasn't enough."

"I'd prefer to do that kind of thing myself."

"Hey, hey, you're fainting because you're confused. And you have a really high fever, you know?"

 Sara let out a sigh.

'Huh, a sigh? But my body is supposed to be lying sick in Grandchester Castle, right?'

"Yeah, that body is something I hurriedly made. It's with your golem, too."

"Thanks for the comment that makes concepts like self and existence feel fuzzy. And stop reading my thoughts."

"Hey, are you mad or something? I mean, I'm what you guys call a god, and I'm the one who reincarnated you."

 "I didn't ask for that."

"Uh, you did say 'someone help me' when you were about to die."

"Normally, anyone would say that when they're dying. By the way, what happened to the taxi driver?"

"He's just going through the cycle of reincarnation on Earth."

 "He didn't say 'help me'?"

"Hmm. He said 'Mom, help me' at the end. So I thought it would be sad to pull him away from that world."

"I have parents and grandparents too, but why am I the one who gets reincarnated in another world?"

"You hadn't gone back home in a long time, right? It only takes an hour by train."

 "Well, that's..."

"You didn't like being interfered with by your mom and grandma, did you? You were tired of being forced into piano, violin, ballet, singing, tea... all those lessons since you were little. And then you even had a tutor in middle school."

"Okay, it was a bit much, but I understood it was for my own good, right?"

 "Hmm."

The god walked over to Sara and lightly tapped her forehead with a fingertip. Then, as if being pulled out by the god's fingertip, the black sphere from earlier smoothly flew out from Sara's forehead.

"These are part of your feelings. It's also the part you probably don't want to see."

'I'm tired. How many hours have I been practicing? I don't want to enter the competition.'

'My toes are crushed, and my feet hurt...'

'Grandma, there's no way I can go to that music school.'

 'I'm not Mom's doll.'

"Ah, yeah, yeah. I admit it. I was definitely fed up with Grandma and Mom's overbearing behavior. When I hit my rebellious phase, I quit all my lessons. I went to a university far from home and started living alone. I even chose a job with a company that has overseas assignments. But that doesn't mean I hated Grandma or Mom."

"That's right. You didn't hate them, so you decided to keep your distance. Sarasa is a good girl. If you graduate from a prestigious national university and get into a big company that everyone knows, and even work overseas, you can be their proud daughter and be free. Luckily, your brother got married easily, so their attention shifted to your niece."

Sara tilted her head and stared at the god in front of her. Not just the hair, but the eyebrows and eyelashes were also light blue. The color of the eyes was a bit darker than the hair, shining like the blue sky. His skin was ivory, and he wore a costume that looked like a chitón layered with a himation.

"Are you the creator god of this world?"

"If by that you mean I shaped this world, then yes, that's me."

"You're not the goddess of creation?"

"I don't have a gender. If you prefer goddess, I can go with that."

"I don't really care either way. I just thought you were a goddess because there's a group that worships the goddess of creation."

"Ah. The founder of that religion is a reincarnator. They met me in the form of a goddess when they were reincarnated."

Sara thought for a moment about what the god said.

"Could it be that you're changing your gender to look more appealing to reincarnators?"

"I thought it might help you fit in better in this world."

"Uh, thanks for your concern? But it's not really my type."

"Oh, your type, huh? Just wait a second."

The god transformed right in front of me into Jeffrey, dressed in knight's armor.

"How about this? Will you listen to me now?"

"This is super annoying, so change back!!!"

The god, overwhelmed by Sara's outburst, quickly returned to its original form.

"I went through all that trouble to help."

"I don't need that kind of help. By the way, do all reincarnators come from that world where Earth was?"

"Yeah, reincarnators in this world do."

"Why do they reincarnate from that world? Why was it me this time? Also, why are there so many Japanese reincarnators? And why are they from different time periods?"

"Whoa, whoa, too many questions! Let's take it one at a time, so calm down!"

The god trimmed the grass at its feet into a square about 30 meters wide, creating a space that looked like a lawn, and set up a rattan table and sofa there. It even set up a small tent for good measure.

The god offered the sofa to Sara, and when she sat down, a bright tropical cocktail-like drink appeared on the table.

"This body can handle alcohol, but I made it non-alcoholic just in case."

 "Thanks for being so thoughtful."

"First, the reason for reincarnating from Earth is that there are too many people there. Because of that, the god from that world is more willing to reincarnate the souls it created into other worlds."

"So, does that mean the god made too many souls?"

"Yeah. The god in that world is kind of like a craftsman or an artist. They keep making souls that they think are good, working hard without rest. Among us, they're famous for creating really strong and flexible souls. But once a soul is made, they don't show much interest in it. Sometimes, when the world gets rough, they might fix or remake those souls."

"If they do proper maintenance, maybe it's not that they're uninterested, but that they value independence? Like, they try not to interfere too much."

"That might be true, but they don't get mad if you take them out. Each soul is handmade, so it's pretty tough to make. Considering the population of Earth, that god is something else. So, we're getting a little bit of the souls that want to return to the cycle of reincarnation."

The suspicious god in front of me smiled widely.

 "Can I ask a question?"

 "What is it?"

"Do you have the other party's consent? I mean, not just the god who created them, but the soul itself. At least, I don't remember giving my consent."
