Volume 14 Chapter 9 Naresh and Al's Dream

Volume 14 Chapter 9 Naresh And Al's Dream

After Nora's Tagard family carriage had left, Al tried using the "Magic Sense" spell in secret. He took a good look around.

The things that reacted and shone brightly were the swords worn by Lord Zora and the two men he was with, Lord Sanford and Desmond. Next, he used the "Detect Magic" spell.

The "Magic Sense" spell's accuracy depended on the spell's mastery, and its effective range depended on his field of vision. In contrast, this spell allowed him to adjust those factors as options when casting.

The results and the spell's mastery level changed the duration of the effect.

Al had decided to keep the discovery accuracy the same and change the effective range from the standard 50 meters (164ft) in his spellbook to 55 meters (180ft).

This was because, after trying various things, he found that to discover magic tools that were said to be hard to detect, like the Ring of Pact, he would need to raise the accuracy a lot, which would cut the duration in half, making it not very practical.

Also, having a slightly wider range would allow him to discover things earlier, which was advantageous, and adding about 5 meters (16ft) to the range wouldn't affect the duration much.

The "Detect Magic" spell reacted to the things that had shone brightly with the "Magic Sense" spell earlier, as well as one thing in a nearby tent, and one or 2 items belonging to Desmond, Lord Zora, and Levy, a familiar face from the merchant guild's mercenary group.

Of course, the Glee pendant Al possessed, the 'Soften Stone' and 'Soften Metal' staffs, the 'Teleport' magic tool, and the mysterious black sphere magic tool he had bought from Lara at a low price all reacted.

The Ring of Pact and the button-shaped magic tool he had hidden away didn't react.

Unlike the 'Magic Sense' spell, this spell could detect magic tools even in hidden places like inside clothes or in a tent, which was a big difference.

"Are you using it now? Only using it when necessary is an adventurer's way...or should I say, it's a very adventurer-like way of doing things."

Lord Zora said, seeming to notice that Al had cast the spell.

"Is Lord Zora always using it?"

"In the Magician Corps, we were taught to keep it going at all times. Especially for those in a protective role, it's said that letting it run out can lead to death, so it was quite strict."

Al nodded in understanding. Beside him, Naresh and Lord Radyard looked puzzled.

"I guess I need to learn how to use detection spells a bit more..."

Lord Zora nodded lightly in response.

"I guess Lady Nora was curious about the number of magic tools that Lord Al has because she is a magician herself. It’s not surprising for a skilled adventurer to have many magic tools, but she doesn’t often get the chance to talk directly with adventurers.

We, the Magician Corps, don’t carry that many magic tools around. Maybe just when we go on missions far away. We often find ourselves in places where the 'Detect Magic' spell is used, so we consider that."

Carrying a lot of magic tools would make one stand out. I see, I hadn't thought of it that way. It's more convenient to carry them regularly, and they don't take up that much space... Al thought about this.

"From what I've heard about how the magicians of the Marquis Prentis family handle things, Mr. Al's magic skills far surpass mine. Not only are you skilled with the 'Magic Missile' spell, but you also learned the 'Piercing Spear' spell in just a few weeks, which is impressive.

Even I can only use the 'Magic Missile' spell five times, and I can only cast the 'Piercing Spear' spell twice. As Lady Nora mentioned, it's a spell that's hard to practice because its power is too strong. So, I would like to know how you practiced it."

So that's why he looked so surprised. He had previously explained to Eric's apprentice, Leda, that adjusting the power down and using it multiple times to increase proficiency is a method, and she was also wide-eyed.

Should Lord Zora even be explained to? Lord Zora's talk went on and on while Al pondered such thoughts.

"However, looking at Mr. Al's manners, I can see that you're still inexperienced and have quite a few danger spots. Sir Naresh is currently at the very front line against the Tempest Kingdom, which makes him more vulnerable to danger. Using 'Detect Magic' on Sir Naresh would have been one of them.

He leaned slightly closer, as if to emphasize the weight of his words. "But, of course, this is limited to being a magician serving a noble, so it may be different as an adventurer."

Al simply nodded at Lord Zora's words. Honestly, he didn't really understand what he was saying. But was Naresh really in that much danger?

"Fortunately, the magicians under the Marquis Prentis took quite a beating from this incident. Thanks to that, there's room for me to move, and I think it gave Sir Naresh enough time to prepare his stance. I consider that a great effort on Mr. Al's part."

He paused, allowing his words to sink in, then added with a warm smile, "If Mr. Al were to serve under Sir Naresh, I'd be more than happy to assist him as much as possible."

Al understood Naresh being in that kind of position, but it was Naresh's dream. For Al, he had a dream of his own──to do something about the Barbarians, especially for his sacrificed sister Ingrid.

He didn't want to let Naresh down. But Naresh's dream and Al's dream were different.

Al shook his head quietly. Seeing this, Naresh cracked a wry smile.

"Lord Zora, by now, you should understand Al's powers, right? And when I said I couldn't make Al my subordinate, that was true, wasn't it?"

Lord Zora nodded in agreement with Naresh's words. To Al, it seemed like the two had suddenly become fast friends. What could Naresh have said to Lord Zora?

"Yes, but I believe the future Mr. Al and Sir Naresh envision will never contradict each other."

Of course, that's what Al hoped for, and what should be.

"I think the same way too."

Naresh said, smiling brightly. Al nodded strongly in agreement, matching Naresh's smile.
