Volume 3 Chapter 29 Holidays For Each: Rail Girard / Fox Mask
The Adventurer's Guild in the south district of the Holy City is a pretty sketchy place. Even if you consider that the south district of Arsubania isn't very safe, it's understandable that regular people wouldn't want to go near it.
Rail, who likes to be light on his feet for battles, wore a black outfit and a white fox mask. He walked through the entrance of the Adventurer's Guild, which is close to the South Gate, a big opening in the wall that surrounds the town.
The Holy City is protected by powerful mages from Saintwise, so monsters can't get in. But just in case, there are tall walls, and at night, a huge iron gate comes down like a cage to keep everything safe.
Strong guards are always at the gate, checking people coming in and out.
They don't check everyone too strictly, but if someone looks suspicious or is carrying something weird, the guards will investigate and hand them over to the Holy Knights if there's a problem.
Many people heading to the Adventurer's Guild in the south district used to be criminals or did shady jobs, so the checks here are a bit stricter than at other entrances to the capital.
"Mr. Aldebarn, I came to collect my reward for the monster hunt the other day."
Rail walked through the entrance with a sign that had messy black writing on it and spoke to a tough-looking guy sitting at the reception on the right.
The man was middle-aged, stylishly sporting a braided beard tied with a ribbon.
His muscular arms were bare, and for some reason, he wore an apron over his bare body because he gets hot easily.
He had a tattoo of a heart with an arrow through it on his shoulder, and below it, it said "Love and Peace.".
Rail thought it was cool.
He wanted to get a tattoo on his chest or shoulder someday too.
The heart with the arrow is considered an old-school, cheesy tattoo, but it's actually seen as cool. He liked the design, but if he got the same one, he'd match Aldebarn, the guild master, and that wouldn't be good.
"When you say 'the other day,' which day are you talking about? You need to report properly, Fox Mask. You've got a lot piled up."
"Well, I defeated the Wandering Cold Wraith, the Unferial in the Dark Forest, and the Makinenxia that pierces the sky. Plus, I finished a job guarding some cargo. I got a signature from the client, but I didn't have time to come see you, Mr. Aldebarn."
"If you don't report to me, you won't get your money."
"Yeah, I know that."
"Guys like you, who adventure for fun, are pretty rare. Most adventurers here can't hold down a regular job."
After Rail handed Aldebarn the proof of his completed tasks, Aldebarn checked the documents and started getting the reward ready.
The jobs that come to the Adventurer's Guild are usually small monster hunts, escort missions, and exploring ruins or caves where monsters live.
It's the quickest way to get work.
Some adventurers don't even register with the guild, but those kinds of adventurers often cause problems, so they're usually avoided.
Rail thinks that having an organization is pretty important.
He wants to be a hero, not a lawbreaker.
"I don't just want money; I want to be a hero, Mr. Aldebarn."
"When I first saw that weird masked guy, I thought you were just strong, but then you start talking about wanting to be a hero. Of course, I want to support that."
When Rail confidently said he wanted to be a hero, he was laughed at at first.
But now, the adventurers hanging out at the guild cheer him on, saying things like, "Good luck, Fox Mask!" and "I heard about your achievements, Fox Mask!" Even if he used to be a nobody, now he's working as an adventurer, so not everyone is bad.
"By the way, Mr. Aldebarn, have you heard any strange rumors lately? Like, maybe there are more cases of the White Moon disease?"
"Disease? The Saint can heal that, right? Lady Francois from the Rest Temple... they say she lost her power. Instead, her daughter, Lady Lydia, has the Saint's power, and people say if you eat Lady Lydia's cooking, it can cure the disease."
"If you know about it, then I guess everyone in town knows too?"
"Not everyone, but the news from the Great Temple is spreading. The White Moon disease was pretty common in the Margrave Wisteria area. I mean, it's still pretty common now. I bet the Saintess will heal it soon."
"Yeah, I hope so, but it seems like it's still a lot."
"The number of sick people in the Holy City has gone down, thanks to the Saintess's cooking. That Fox Mask person, their hair color used to be from being sick, right? Well, they must be better now since they're here."
"I'm fine, see?"
Rail did a quick spin in the air.
The people lounging on the sofa at the adventurer guild, drinking during the day, clapped for him.
"That's great to hear. Here, take your reward."
"Thanks, Mr. Aldebarn."
"...By the way, Fox Mask. You were with the knights during the big spider hunt at the Great Temple the other day, right?"
"You know that well."
"Well, it's hard to miss you. I heard that Roxas Girard, the next Duke, was calling you 'Brother!' really loudly."
"What?"
"Rail Girard, if you want to keep your identity hidden, you should be more careful about that."
"Oh."
Now that he think about it, Roxas did call him 'Brother' pretty loudly.
Rail rubbed his forehead.
He had let his guard down. It felt so natural to be called that, he completely forgot.
"Well, you can stay as Fox Mask here, and I won't pry into why you want to hide your identity."
"Ah..."
Rail thought about Roxas, who had returned to the Duke Girard family.
Of course, his father, Marx Girard, would have heard about what happened at the Great Temple.
He had a bad feeling that things wouldn't end well.
