Volume 6 Chapter 26 A Break At The Girard House
The welcome party for Sir Rail at Duke Girard's house went on late into the night.
They served all kinds of food and drinks, and Mr. Lucian politely said, "I should leave since I don't belong here," but Sir Rail pulled him back, and Elder Brother Chrisrain grabbed his arm and forced him to drink.
Sir Stefan, who isn't great with alcohol, cried and said, "Rail and Roxas, I'm so happy for you... I'm really glad you made up with your parents..."
Elder Brother Chrisrain, who is picky about food, praised each dish from the Girard kitchen, and the cooks admired him.
Sir Rail and Mr. Lucian had a sword practice together.
Since Sir Stefan was there, Sir Marx officially handed over the Duke's title to Sir Roxas in front of him.
Hearing that, Sir Stefan said, "Roxas, let's do our best together," and cried again.
Sir Rail returned to the Duke's house but was allowed to continue being an adventurer by the newly appointed Duke, Sir Roxas.
A lot happened.
The place was lively, and cheerful voices filled the air. Even though the Girard house felt like a prison, with Sir Rail and everyone around, it felt like being in Lobelia's shop.
I got sleepy and dozed off a bit, and Lady Irfimia took Eir-Eir, Ms. Famine, and my dad to the guest room.
Sir Roxas and Sir Rail offered to walk us, but Lady Irfimia firmly said, "It's not proper for young ladies to be escorted to their rooms at night unless they're engaged."
Now that I think about it, I haven't considered that much lately.
Normally, it's not good for a lady to be alone with a man.
I thought it was okay since we're friends, but maybe I should be more careful.
Lady Irfimia's words reminded me of being a lady.
Next time, I should talk to Mx. Margaret and my mother about it.
"...Ms. Lydia. Thank you so much for today. We made a lot of mistakes, but... I shouldn't think that one day, Roxas and Rail will forgive us. I will work hard to make up for my wrongs."
In front of the room, Lady Irfimia bowed deeply.
I hadn't really done anything, so I waved my hands nervously.
"I just stood next to Sir Roxas... Thank you for letting me wear such a lovely dress. I feel bad wearing a dress meant for the Girard family's bride."
"You look great in it, Ms. Lydia."
"Thank you."
"You can come to our house anytime. You can stay as long as you want. Roxas may be clumsy, but he's a kind and caring brother, and I think he's reliable. Rail is smart and cheerful... and I think both of them are good-looking."
"Uh, yeah, I guess so..."
I watched Lady Irfimia as she held my hands and started talking excitedly about Sir Roxas and Sir Rail.
I wondered what she was saying.
The grandfather clock chimed midnight with a low sound. Bong. Bong. Bong.
The big pendulum clock at the bottom of the Girard house's grand staircase makes a creepy sound at midnight and noon. It feels like a ghost might appear. I stayed up really late, so I'm sleepy.
The party in the chapel is still going on.
Men have so much energy.
It seems like everyone is talking about what happened before.
They talked about King Zeere's illness, the Kirschtein tragedy, and my own story.
Memories can be fuzzy, so sometimes we need to talk about them to remember.
Sir Marx and Elder Brother Chrisrain seemed to be asking a lot of questions because there were things they didn't know.
"If Ms. Lydia is okay with it, you can come and be my bride anytime."
"Oh, thank you..."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. Ms. Lydia looks a lot like Lady Tiansa, so it feels like I've known you for a long time."
"Do you know my mother, Lady Irfimia?"
"Yes. We were at the same school. But since I'm younger, I only saw her from a distance. Sir Feldur and Lady Tiansa were such a loving couple, everyone admired them."
"I see... They still seem very close, so I can kind of imagine it."
I feel happy when my father and mother are close.
It's a bit complicated that my mother is so young, but even though she's young, she still feels like my mother, so I don't mind it as much anymore.
"I casually said you could come and be a bride, but since Ms. Lydia is an only child, does that mean Ms. Lydia has to take over the Rest Priest Family someday?"
"Right now, I'm allowed to be free... But I've been thinking that we need to talk about it, especially after seeing Sir Roxas and Sir Rail."
"...I'm sorry for saying too much. Ms. Lydia, please take your time to rest."
Lady Irfimia said this apologetically and left me with the maids.
Once I was taken to the guest room, the maids helped me take off my wedding dress.
Eir-Eir, Ms. Famine, and my dad were already curled up in bed.
After taking a bath and changing into my nightclothes, I slipped into bed with everyone.
"Eir-Eir is so soft, Ms. Famine is fluffy, and Dad is so cuddly..."
I hugged everyone tightly and snuggled close.
It felt warm and nice.
Love. Marriage. Family stuff. Feelings for someone. Feelings for everyone.
Mx. Margaret, Mr. Tsukuyomi, my father and mother, FraFra.
Everyone's faces floated behind my eyelids.
Love and affection are strong feelings.
Feelings that can burn you up or even destroy you.
I saw and felt this in my memories of Eir-Eir and Ms. Famine.
Sylphina's feelings for God Theobart.
That's a little scary.
It's gentle, warm, and nice. But it's not just that.
Slowly, my awareness drifted into sleep.
At that moment, I had no idea that bad news would come the next day.
