Volume 6 Chapter 39 Rosamia, The Girl Of Gelhyum
The girl in the white dress has arms and legs made of stone.
It's my first time seeing her up close.
Her arms and legs are thin, and her skin is a clear emerald green, shining in the sunlight.
She has a small face with eyes that look like deep blue jewels.
It feels like a delicate glass doll is moving with life.
She's beautiful and cute. The doll-like girl asks me in a sweet voice.
"The king said that humans are coming to break us. My dad went to the castle to fight. Please, don't hurt my dad. I beg you."
"Rosamia, no...! Sir Filouz told you to hide inside the house...! Your dad will be okay... Please, don't hurt this girl. If you want, I'll give you my body...!"
A woman, who seems to be Rosamia's mom, comes running after the girl from Gem's People. She kneels in front of us and hugs her tightly to hide her from us.
She looks really scared.
She's afraid of us.
Because we're human.
Seeing the girl's mom offering her own body made my heart ache.
(Is it really that normal for Gem's People to be attacked and hurt by humans...?)
How cruel it is.
That someone would naturally say they'd give their body to ask for forgiveness.
"I'm Stefan Bernard. I'm the son of the King Zeere and the one who succeeded the Holy King. I didn't come here to hurt you. It's okay."
"...Holy King?"
"Did the Holy King come to destroy this town?"
Sir Stefan knelt in front of them and spoke gently.
The girl looked at Sir Stefan with curiosity, while her mom hid Rosamia even more in her arms, looking scared.
"No. We came to protect this country. There are monsters in this town. If this continues, there will be fights because of the monsters. We came to stop that."
"They're not monsters. They're the Prophets. The Prophets are protecting us."
"Prophets..."
Sir Stefan repeated the words of the Gem's People's mom.
So, they call the Prophet that in this town.
"Since the Prophet came, attacks on this town have decreased. Suddenly, people stopped coming to kidnap children. Humans say that the children of Gem's People have prettier jewels."
"...That's terrible."
"It's cruel. I'm sorry we couldn't protect you until now."
I couldn't help but whisper.
Sir Stefan also looked down.
"No matter what I say, it will sound like an excuse. But both my father and I have wanted to protect you."
"The only ones who have protected us are the Prophets. When the Prophet came, the king's son returned. Sir Filouz has been enduring sadness for a long time, but he won't last much longer. Sir Ciel will guide us in place of Sir Filouz. He will protect us. So please, leave this town."
"Sir Ciel... Where is Sir Ciel? We came to help Sir Ciel. Sir Ciel is being controlled by monsters, and I... I have to save Sir Ciel."
That's my wish.
But for a moment, I doubted if that was okay.
The Gem's People in this town must have gone through a lot of cruelty.
If the Witch's daughter is protecting the Gem's People from humans...
If they are choosing Sir Ciel to be the next king...
We're trying to defeat Eirnelys and get Sir Ciel back, so I guess that makes us their enemies.
(But... Sir Ciel looked like he was in pain.)
"What do you mean by helping? Sir Ciel is Sir Filouz's grandchild. He has royal blood. It's his job to protect us."
"Sir Ciel is protecting us from bad people. Isn't it humans who want to hurt us?"
Gem's People's mom said this with a puzzled look. Rosamia also looked at me with questions in her eyes.
I didn't know how to answer.
(Sir Ciel called my name. He said he had nothing to give to Eirnelys.)
Being here isn't Sir Ciel's choice.
Even if Gem's People rely on him, that Sir Ciel isn't really Sir Ciel.
"I think I understand how you all have felt. We are responsible for your suffering because we couldn't protect you. But if this continues, there will be a fight worse than anything we've seen before. Just like the destroyed Kirschtein."
Mr. Lucian stepped forward to protect me and said this.
"We came to prevent a fight. We won't harm you. You shouldn't leave your fate in the hands of monsters. Ciel probably doesn't want to fight either. ...Please, trust us. That's all I can say right now. I'm sorry."
Sir Stefan said that and then stood up.
He then urged me to follow him up the stairs, leaving Rosamia and the others behind.
I stopped and crouched down in front of the girl.
"It's scary, isn't it? I think it's really scary. ...Suddenly, strangers came to the town. I would be scared too if strangers suddenly came into my shop. I was scared when I first met Sir Ciel. I thought he was a pervert person who just showed up."
"Pervert...?"
"Ah, you don't need to remember that word...! But I don't think of him that way anymore. I like Sir Ciel. We all like Sir Ciel. That's why we want to help him. If we do nothing, many people might get hurt..."
"I don't want anyone to get hurt. It's scary. I want to be with my dad and mom."
I reached out and gently patted Rosamia's head.
Her hair felt like it was made of jewels. It was hard to the touch, but I could feel warmth.
"It's okay. I'm sure it will be okay. I'm... a Saint!"
"Saint lady."
"I'm a Saint who can cook."
I focused on my outstretched palm.
I hadn't used magic since the chaos at the Great Temple. I might have mixed some magic into my daily cooking, but creating food from nothing was something I hadn't done since then.
I imagined the shape in my mind.
"Come out, Eir-Eir drop!"
With my words, a few small pink candies shaped like Eir-Eir appeared on my palm.
"Eating sweets makes you feel better. So, please take one."
"Eat?"
"Lydia. Gem's People don't eat food."
Rosamia tilted her head in confusion, and I did the same.
Mr. Lucian explained, and I was surprised and widened my eyes.
They don't eat food. I didn't know that. Did we learn that in school? I didn't think we talked about it.
"Eat... like this..."
I showed her how to put the Eir-Eir drop in my mouth.
It tasted like strawberry milk. I had a feeling it would, and it really did taste like strawberry milk.
Eir-Eir and Ms. Famine looked up at me with their mouths open, so I gave them drops too.
Both of them looked satisfied and flapped their wings and tails after eating the drops.
"...eat."
"Don't trust humans. Sir Filouz said so"
"But I want to try it."
Rosamia's delicate fingers, made of jewels, reached for the drop.
She picked one up and carefully put it in her small mouth.
"...What is this? I'm happy. Mom, I'm happy."
"Um, is it maybe delicious?"
"It's delicious. Delicious. Delicious."
Rosamia kept saying it was delicious over and over.
When I offered some to my mom, she hesitantly reached out and took a drop to put in her mouth.
"Yes. It's delicious... so delicious..."
"There are plenty. So if you're scared or worried, just put one in your mouth. It will help you feel a bit better. Um, I can't explain it well, but it's okay...!"
I can only say vague things.
Rosamia took a lot of drops with both hands.
I felt a little relieved and stood up.
Then I handed drops to Sir Stefan and Mr. Lucian, who had been waiting for me.
(The people from Gem's People don't want to fight either.)
No one wants to fight.
I want to help Sir Ciel, and after that, I don't know what to do.
But I'm not alone. If we all think together, we can come up with a good plan.
So, it's okay. I can believe that it's okay.
