Volume 1 Chapter 43, Part 2 Mean Villainess, Sympathy
"Graduation?"
I didn't not read the newspaper because I couldn't, but that was not the point.
"To be precise, I will receive my graduation qualifications. And then, I will immediately join the Royal Guard Magic Division."
"What!? So soon... ah, that's why."
"That's why?"
"Oh, no, it's nothing."
Somehow, I felt that the reason my mother was absent this morning and the reason there was no newspaper were connected.
If this story was in the newspaper, then my mother must have taken the newspaper and locked herself in her room.
After all, if Sir Lorentz graduates earlier than expected, it means he won't meet the heroine.
This must mean the scenario is going off track.
I mean, I was the one who taught him how to increase his magical power, so isn't it my fault that the scenario got messed up?
What a mess.
But I didn't know that... I mean, I never thought it would turn out like this.
"So, Elena."
"Ah, yes."
"That woman who had her engagement broken off might seek revenge and harm you."
"Ah... yes."
"I'll teach you the magic to deal with harmful beasts."
"No, I'll handle it without extermination, so I'll pass..."
After receiving Sir Lorentz's thanks, I declined Mister Eliseo's offer, and that was the end of our conversation as time was up.
In any case, Sir Lorentz joining the Royal Guard Magic Division is a joyous occasion.
Probably.
But thinking about what expression my mother will have when I get home only fills me with anxiety.
That was what I was thinking about after school.
Mister Eliseo's prediction came true.
"I wish you had been chosen as a bride candidate. I wish you had your engagement broken off!"
Standing in front of me was the wealthy Margrave's daughter.
She had a triumphant look on her face when she was chosen as a bride candidate, and now she says she wishes I had been chosen instead.
I was completely taken aback by her unexpected words.
"Well, I understand what you want to say."
"What!? Are you going to pity me!?"
That's pretty much the vibe, I thought to myself as I thrust a leather pouch in front of her.
"Huh, what?"
"Inside this bag are gemstones used for fortune-telling. Would you like to try a simple glimpse into the future? After all, there's no point in dragging out the fact that you've been broken off from your engagement. Please choose a stone from here."
As I said this, she looked skeptical but cautiously reached into the leather bag I had extended.
"One?"
"As many as you like. Go with your intuition."
The stone she pulled out from the bag was a pink gemstone cut into the shape of a rose.
A typical love stone.
The stone placed in my palm had lost its shine and appeared shrouded in a dark haze.
This state signifies confusion.
I focused my mind on the stone for a moment, picking up the messages it conveyed.
"Um, don't you really have someone you like other than Sir Lorentz?"
"Huh? N-no, I don't, I mean... I don't!"
From her reaction and the stone she chose, it seemed like she might actually have someone.
She does have someone, but she's confused about it.
Probably because the person is of lower status.
Thinking this, I reached into the leather bag myself and scooped up 2 stones.
"Ah, even if you don't have someone right now, they should appear eventually. And that person seems to really like you. The stone is sparkling brightly."
From the image the stone projected, it seemed like the person was a childhood friend she met before she became so twisted.
Well, it looks like she has a good person.
"R-really?"
"Yes. And this light column created by this light blue stone is a stone that blesses a happy marriage."
Upon hearing my words, she stared at the light column with her mouth agape, a face unbecoming of a noble lady.
"...You're not just saying that to placate me, are you?"
"I have been studying fortune-telling for long, so I don't have the skills to make the stones shine with lies or jokes. So it's not a lie. Whether you believe it or not is up to you."
After saying this, she looked around nervously and then glared at me.
"W-well. But... but! I won't forgive you!"
She said, her cheeks slightly flushed.
Surely, she won't bother me from now on.
Not ever again.
"Lady, are you okay?"
After confirming that she had run off, Rolus, who had been standing by, spoke up.
"I'm fine. To be honest, I was feeling a bit unsettled, but it seems that girl will be happy as long as she stops bothering others."
"I am not concerned about that woman. I am asking if you are okay, Lady."
"Me? I'm fine, you know?"
"...But your level of meanness seems to be decreasing?"
"Oh no!!"
That's right, a mean noble lady wouldn't give advice like this!
...But, well, that's okay.
