Volume 4 Chapter 18 Dwarf Girl

Volume 4 Chapter 18 Dwarf Girl

In the forest, after saving the dwarf girl, we were riding in the cart.

 "Thank you for saving me!"

The girl with reddish-brown hair in twin tails bowed her head politely.

 "I'm Ena!"

"I'm Zeke. This is Chippy and Cino."

I introduced myself and my companions.

Ena gave us a deep bow.

"Thank you for rescuing me from that dangerous place!"

 "No problem."

 I waved it off casually.

"But... why was a small girl like you in such a dangerous place?"

"Um... Ena isn't small... I'm 20 years old!"

Her face flushed, and she puffed out her cheeks.

 We were taken aback.

"I can't believe it... you don't look 20 at all!"

 I couldn't help but stare.

 Ena chuckled nervously.

"It's one of the great mysteries of humanity."

Chippy and Cino leaned in, inspecting her more closely.

Hmm, she really didn't look like she was 20.

 "Aw... how embarrassing..."

Ena blushed deeply and started fidgeting with her hands.

"Hmm! I sense a rival in love!"

 Cino grinned mischievously.

"I completely agree." Chippy nodded with a smirk.

"Brother, you've got a way with women."

 "Oh boy..."

 Cino sighed, shaking her head.

 "Did you do something, Zeke?"

 I shrugged nonchalantly.

"Not really. By the way, what were you doing there, Ms. Ena?"

It seemed strange for someone to be wandering alone in a snow-covered forest.

 "I was gathering materials."

"Are you an adventurer?" I asked.

"No, I'm a blacksmith," she replied with a smile.

I nodded in understanding. I'd heard that many dwarves were skilled at handiwork. So, she must have been gathering materials for crafting.

"You're running a blacksmith shop even though you're so small?"

"Actually," she began, her tone softening, "it was my father's shop. But..."

Her voice broke, and she sniffled, her eyes starting to glisten.

I quickly reached into my pouch and handed her a handkerchief.

"I'm sorry, did I remind you of something painful?"

She took it from me, wiping her eyes.

"I'm sorry for suddenly... getting emotional."

It hurt to see her like this. I couldn't leave her like this.

"If you're in trouble, I can help."

She looked up at me, teary-eyed, and gave a small nod.

"Thank you... but... my father isn't around anymore..."

"What happened to him?" I asked, my voice gentle.

"A few days ago, he went to investigate the cause of the ground subsidence... and hasn't been seen since."
