Volume 1 Chapter 43 Interlude: The Story of a Sixth Rank Adventurer in a Corner
*Third-person perspective.*
<hr>
"This is bullshit! Why the hell isn't anything working out?!"
The adventurer's guild in Bechmer, specifically the tavern area.
Guy was yelling to himself, a mug of ale in his hand.
The other adventurers, not wanting to get mixed up in his drama, were giving him a wide berth.
After his duel with Ryuuji, Guy got demoted from Fourth Rank all the way down to Sixth Rank.
The reason?
He'd cheated by using Marie and Sean's help during the duel.
They got knocked down 2 ranks too, ending up at Fourth Rank.
Sean had already ditched Guy and skipped town.
"My <Sword of the Conqueror> broke, and I owe Marie 500 gold coins... There's no way I can pay that off with Sixth Rank quests!"
Guy tried to weasel out of paying Marie back since there wasn't even a contract, but there were tons of witnesses to him stealing 5 holy gold coins from her.
Guildmaster Emin put the screws to him, forcing him to sign a legit contract.
There was no way Guy could escape this.
Adventurers in debt aren't allowed to just up and move their base of operations without the creditor's permission.
No one in their right mind would hire him in his current situation, so Guy was totally screwed, with no work coming his way.
"It's all that Ryuuji's fault! And that Suzu too! If she'd just told me where Minori was, I wouldn't be in this mess! Damn it! Damn it!"
Guy kept slamming his fist on the table, just spewing venom.
This dude was just chilling when a magician-looking guy in a white robe strolled up to him.
"Looks like you're having a rough time."
"...Huh? Who the hell are you?"
Guy, who was sprawled out, turned his head toward the voice.
The magician didn't even answer, just silently sat down in the chair right in front of him.
"I could, you know, let you have 5 holy gold coins, if you're interested?"
"...What's the catch?"
Even Guy knew there was no such thing as a free lunch.
He glared at the shady magician, like he wanted to burn holes through him with his eyes.
"Heh, you got that 'Berserk' look in your eyes, just like they say. Don't sweat it. The holy gold coins are definitely here."
The magician flipped a bag of coins upside down and dumped them on the table with a heavy *clunk, clunk*.
They were definitely holy gold coins, and there were like, ten of them, not 5.
Guy sobered up real quick.
"Whoa, are those, like, actually holy gold coins? Hey! I thought you were giving them to me!"
Just as he reached for them, the magician leaned over and covered the coins with his arm, so Guy started bitching.
"Didn't you just ask what the catch was? I'll hand them over once you complete the request."
The magician held up one finger at the annoyed Guy, put the holy gold coins away, and smirked.
"...A request? You want *me* to do a request? And why aren't we going through the Guild?"
Usually, adventurers get their jobs through the guild.
Even if it's a specific party they're looking for.
Adventure guilds handle all the paperwork, so if you do a job outside of the guild, you don't get any credit for it.
That means you can't level up.
"You're the only one who can answer the first question. And about the other one..."
The magician tucked away their money bag and leaned over the table, getting right in Guy's face.
"This is a job no one else can handle, you know?"
"...wait, what?"
Guy's eyes widened as he finally understood what the magician was saying.
"Yeah, that's right. It's an illegal job, just like you're thinking. It's an assassination contract for a certain enchanter you probably know."
"...No way!"
"That's exactly what it is."
Guy's eyes blazed with the fire of revenge as he stood up.
The magician just smirked and nodded.
"Call me Ferron. I'm paying you two holy gold coins upfront, plus information on the whereabouts of enchanter Ryuuji and the swordsman Minori. What do you say?"
The outrageous pay, the upfront cash, and the opportunity for revenge were too much for Guy to resist.
He jumped right on it.
* * *
"Finally calmed down."
"Even a former Second Rank adventurer can go crazy like this. Got to be losing it, huh?"
Two adventurers sitting at a table next to Guy were whispering as they watched his strange behavior.
"Yeah, he was talking to someone, but it looked like he was seeing a hallucination or something."
"He got demoted 4 ranks and is in massive debt. It's a shame."
The adventurers looked at Guy with pity, a sad little smile on their faces.
