Volume 1 Chapter 32 The Banished Half-Elf and the Foolish Prince [Dranix V]

Volume 1 Chapter 32 The Banished Half-Elf and the Foolish Prince [Dranix V]

Mida joined the Guild Gem of Heavenly Gift.

After training with the Centaurs, she was now a member of Rosalia's party.

They were in a town outside the kingdom.

 "GRRR! GRRR! GAH!"

A puppet, controlled by magic, ran wild through the streets. Adventurer parties struggled to deal with the out-of-control magical dolls.

 "Damn it, it's tough!"

 "Strong! Let's retreat!"

Even seasoned adventurers were no match.

 "Weeeee! Mommy!"

A little girl, fallen and crying, was trapped behind. One of the magical puppets lunged toward her.

Whoosh!

The core of the puppet was pierced clean through by something sharp and swift.

 "Huh...?"

 "Hey, are you alright?"

With a silent landing, Mida appeared—half-elf, calm, eyes sharp.

 "Are you hurt?"

 "Uh... yeah."

More puppets approached, their eerie clatter closing in.

But Mida didn't panic. She moved with quiet precision, loosing arrows from her shortbow. One by one, each shot struck true, piercing their cores.

 "Wow... so cool..."

The girl watched, wide-eyed. Mida looked less like a young adventurer and more like a seasoned warrior.

 "Where are Mommy and Daddy?"

 "I... I don't know."

"Are you lost? What's your name?"

 "Lena."

Mida closed her eyes, listening. Then she nodded.

 "Come on. Can you run?"

 "Uh... yeah!"

Mida took her hand, and together they ran deeper into town. Not hesitating. Not slowing.

 They reached a back alley.

 "Lena!"

 "Mommy!"

The child broke free, running to her mother's arms. Tears streamed down their faces as they embraced.

 "That's good, Lena."

Mida smiled softly. The child beamed up at her.

 "Thank you, sister!"

"Yeah! I'm not gonna get away from Ka-chan anymore."

 "Yeah!"

 And then—

 They were surrounded.

Magical puppets blocked the alley, front and back. Their empty, glowing eyes locked on them.

Mida stepped forward, shielding the family behind her.

 "Sister... what should I do..."

 Lena clung to her mother.

"Don't worry," Mida said, calm and steady. "We've got a bunch of awesome folks here."

 SWOOSH!

A swordsman landed from the rooftop in a blur of motion.

 "Sorry, I'm late!"

 "No worries, sis! Everything's cool!"

Rosalia had arrived. Red-haired, sword flashing in the dim alley light. She moved like a storm, cutting through the puppets as if they were nothing but paper dolls.

With Mida's arrows and Rosalia's blade, the puppets were wiped out in moments.

"Thank you so much! I don't know how to express my gratitude..."

Lena's mother bowed again and again.

"Please. Don't mention it." Mida knelt, patting Lena's head. "See you later, Lena. No more crying, okay?"

 "Okay! Bye-bye!"

After ensuring the family was safe, Mida and the others worked alongside the town's adventurers, exterminating the remaining magic dolls.

 That night, at the inn.

"Sis, we've been seeing a lot of those rampaging magic dolls lately, haven't we?"

"Yes, we have. Unless we destroy the core, they keep going berserk until their magic runs out. It's... quite a hassle."

Sigh.

Mida exhaled, her shoulders relaxing just a little.

"By the way, Mida. Have you heard anything about the Mother?"

"Nope... nothing yet. But we just got to this town. I want to stick around a bit longer."

"That's fine. The request from the Guildmaster isn't urgent."

The Guild's current task was a simple one: collect herbs found near the town.

The Guild was covering all the costs.

"Sis... I've been wondering. Don't we get a lot of these requests from abroad?"

After her training, Act had invited Mida to join the party.

Rosalia's team was the Guild's top party. Domestic and foreign requests came often, but it was rare for foreign jobs to pile up like this.

"Heh... you've probably figured it out already, haven't you? The Guildmaster's kindness."

 "Yeah..."

Foreign requests meant the Guild paid for travel. If the job dragged on, lodging expenses were covered too.

For Mida, each quest was another chance to search for her mother.

And Act supported her. Calling it a quest. Making it official.

 "That's odd. Usually, a Guildmaster isn't this hands-on... or so I've heard."

"Yes, that's true. But... that person is special. He always puts our happiness as Guild members first."

Rosalia's cheeks flushed pink. Her gaze softened.

"Ah, sister... could it be you like the Guildmaster?"

 "Hehe...♡ Well, what about it?"

"C'mon! You're obviously curious, just tell me!"

 "Then... what about MidMid?"

"Ah! I... well, I'm grateful! Really. Um... that's all... wait, why are you giving me that knowing look, sister?"

 "My, my... hehe...♡"

KNOCK KNOCK.

A firm knock at the door.

 Rosalia rose.

"Yes... oh? You must be the—"

"Lena's grandmother, right? What's the matter?"

 The woman bowed deeply.

 "I'm the innkeeper here."

 "I see. And?"

 "Actually..."

After hearing the innkeeper's information, Mida bolted from the inn.

 Her feet pounded the cobblestone.

Hah...! Hah...! Hah...!

She forced herself to steady her breathing. Her pace never slowed.

_As an innkeeper, I often hear rumors. They say, in a corner of this town's slums, there are half-elf refugees..._

Guided by the innkeeper's words, Mida raced toward the slums.

 It was a large town.

The buildings were dense, the streets twisted and confusing, like veins and arteries beneath skin.

Without the innkeeper's knowledge, she'd never have made it.

 "Mom! Mommy!"

 She reached the slums.

 Tight alleys. Shabby homes.

 Her breath caught.

 "Mommy..."

 "Mida!"

 She spun.

A half-elf comrade stood there, smiling.

 "Hey there!"

"Mida! It's great to see you! Are you alright?!"

Relief flooded her. Mida embraced them tightly.

 "Right! Where's Mom?!"

"Don't worry. Ms. Mishera is safe."

They hurried through the winding alleys.

Finally, they reached a makeshift shack.

 Inside, dim and quiet.

 "Mida..."

Her mother lay on a futon. Pale, but alive.

 "Mom...!"

 Tears welled up and fell.

Drip, drip...

 "Sniff... sob... WAAAAHHHH!"

Mida rushed to her mother's side, burying herself in her arms.

 "Mom!"

 "Mida! Oh, Mida!"

They clung to each other, tears of joy mixing with years of longing.

"I'm so sorry, Mida... I put you through so much pain..."

"No! It's okay! A kind Guildmaster helped me!"

 Mida's gratitude was deep.

The Guildmaster had saved her... and helped her find her way here.

At last, she was reunited with her mother.
