Volume 4 Chapter 13 Interlude: The Little Lady
It was the afternoon of the day Ryuji and the others were attacked by Miloslaf at the harbor's warehouse.
In the backyard of his house, the sound of Minori's brave voice and the clashing of wooden swords echoed loudly.
"Ugh... How come I can't hit him with a one-handed sword when he's coming at me with a 2-handed one?!"
As usual, Minori was training in battle with 2 wooden swords, but today her opponent was not Ryuji.
"You're aiming for vital spots too much. Your sword techniques are too obvious. Later, you can use things other than swords, like body techniques, like your brother. You can't fight against people properly without proper etiquette."
Miloslaf, having taken off his armor and easily blocking Minori's attacks with a single wooden sword, calmly said so without breaking a sweat.
Although his usual prey was with a greatsword, handling a one-handed sword was no problem for him, and he was even toying with the attacks of the First Rank Adventurer, Minori.
"Liar... There's no way Big Sister Minori can't land a single hit..."
Ai, who had been training with Minori earlier, could only mutter to herself as she watched Minori's one-sided attacks and Miloslaf's perfect defense.
"Alright, that's enough. Let's take a break."
"Haa... Haa..."
Minori stopped swinging as Miloslaf told her to, gasping for breath and drenched in sweat.
She had been practicing for about 30 minutes, and while she was exhausted, Miloslaf still looked cool and relaxed.
"I joined in when you asked me to, but really, offense and defense are 2 sides of the same coin. If I can't attack, I can't see how this practice means anything. ...Well, I see your skills need work."
"Ugh, uuu..."
Minori hung her head at Miloslaf's harsh critique.
He was right; there's no way to just attack without worrying about defense, and practicing like that was pointless.
"If you want, I could lift your leash."
"No... that's not allowed."
Minori finally caught her breath and replied firmly, despite the wicked grin on Miloslaf's face.
The black knight shrugged his shoulders, looking hardly disappointed at all.
"Hey, Big Sis Minori, you doing okay?"
"Huh? ...Whoa!? Maria!?"
While Minori was lost in her thoughts, she suddenly noticed Mariana, Ryuuji and Lene's little girl, staring up at her with curiosity.
She froze in surprise.
Normally, this girl never came to the backyard, so Minori had let her guard down.
"Oh? What's up, little one? An elf... no, a half-elf, right? Are you Count's daughter?"
Miloslaf called out in a curious tone, and Mariana tilted her head, momentarily confused, but then realized he was talking to her.
She grabbed the hem of her dress and gave a charming little curtsy to the black knight.
"Hello, I am Mariana. Nice to meet you!"
"...You're small, but very polite!"
"That's because I'm a lady!"
Everyone but Mariana burst out laughing at those words.
The little lady didn't know that their reaction was because of her statement and tilted her head again in confusion.
"Um, may I ask for your name, sir?"
"Hehe... Ah, I'm Miloslaf, a loyal follower of God Abnella."
Mariana thought for a moment about what the man had just said.
It wasn't because she didn't understand the words.
"...Abnella? So, you're saying the Evil God?"
Thanks to teachings from Ryuuji and Lene, Mariana seemed to understand and threw that question out.
Miloslaf scratched his head, looking at Minori and Ai, saying, "Ah..."
Ryuuji's younger sister and eldest daughter exchanged worried glances with him, as if to say, "Don't say too much."
"...Well, everyone calls her that. We don't think they're Evil God, though."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah, what people call a god or an Evil God is something humans decide in the end."
Mariana pondered Miloslaf's words for a bit, but a few seconds later, she bowed deeply.
"I'm sorry for calling them Evil God!"
"......Really, what a well-mannered little one. Hey, you all should learn from her!"
Miloslaf, completely disarmed, said this to Minori and Ai, who looked at each other, confused.
