Volume 4 Chapter 22 The Master of That Tentacle, Seen After a Long Time――
I'm finally reaching the western continent, known as Quechua.
Until then, I'm following the established route from my previous 2 voyages, stopping at 2 inhabited islands to restock supplies.
It seems I've also packed some exchange goods for that purpose.
It's the fifth day of the voyage, and even though I'm not bored, I'm busy polishing the magic stone I brought along with a portable cutting disk.
If I can sell my magic stone in Quechua, that would be perfect.
The ship sways, but once you get used to the rhythm, it's manageable.
By the way, Miloslaf seems to be out on deck swinging his sword.
Even out here on the sea, he keeps up his training.
I guess it's those little efforts that build his incredible strength.
"...Speaking of which, when we get to Quechua, I need to get back the <Magic Stone of Cashunat>."
As I keep working, that thought crosses my mind.
The <Magic Stone of Cashunat> helps me understand unfamiliar words, but for now, I've only lent one to the captain.
Without it, I can't even begin to investigate Abnella's faith.
It would have been great to have more, but what you can do with the magic stones, which are 'gifts' from the Blessing, is known only to the gods.
I've created dozens of 'gifts,' but unfortunately, I haven't been able to make multiple <Magic Stones of Cashunat>.
"It's funny how the things you really want are always out of reach..."
I can't shake off this feeling.
My own greed must be getting in the way.
Just when I was about to start working on the third magic stone today, a loud crash sounded and the ship jolted up and down violently.
"Whoa!?"
I quickly grabbed the bed's leg nearby to keep my balance.
Oh, that was close.
If I had been cutting, the magic stone would have been ruined.
But what was that shaking?
It clearly wasn't caused by the waves; it felt like we hit a reef, but what was that noise...?
"Whoa!?"
This time, there was no sound, but we swayed hard to the left!
What on earth is happening!?
Amid the irregular shaking, I quickly put away my tools and headed out of the cabin to the deck.
* * *
On the deck, I saw a scene of many sailors running in panic.
So, what are they running from──
"...What is that?"
Following the sailors with slow, lumbering movements was a man whose upper body was covered in golden scales, looking like a fish.
Whoa, is that what I think it is?
"It's a merman."
"...So, they're here."
Just as I stepped out of the ship's corridor to the left, I heard a voice.
Leaning against the wall with an bored look was Miloslaf.
The greatsword in his hand was stained with fresh blood.
Must be from the merman.
"Aren't you attacked?"
"I was the first to be attacked. I turned one into rust for my sword, and ever since, no merman has come at me. Seriously, what pathetic weaklings."
Miloslaf said this, twisting his mouth in disdain.
I see, so he has been recognized as a dangerous person.
Well, after seeing that sword skill once, I'd think twice too.
"Go help the crew, will ya? ...But what was that shaking and noise just now? It didn't seem like something the merfolk would do."
"I'm not just sitting around, I've got other things to do──Hey!"
My question was met with a response from Miloslaf, who suddenly took a big step to the left side of the ship and swung his greatsword.
"...Huh, what's this...?"
With a slash from Miloslaf, something was cut down with a thud, and a few seconds later it fell to the deck.
Squirming right in front of me was something I hadn't seen in a long time, but it was definitely something I'd rather not see.
"Golden... tentacles...? Is there a Dark Mage around...?"
I gazed at the thing lying on the deck, still cut, and muttered in astonishment.
Golden tentacles are weapons often used by Dark Mages, summoned frequently for both attack and defense.
"It's not a Dark Mage! Look closer!"
"Huh?"
Turning my gaze to Miloslaf, who was barking orders, I saw him skillfully balancing on the left edge, dazzlingly slicing through even more tentacles with his sword technique.
And beyond that, I spotted 2 large eyes floating in the sea, and I finally realized the owner of the tentacles──a many-tentacled sea monster, a kraken, dragging the ship into the sea.
