Volume 4 Chapter 30 If It's a Fight That Can Be Avoided
I thought Tihuacan would come after me while I was staggering, but instead, he turned around and faced away.
He thinks magic won't work on him, huh? Damn it.
As expected, Miloslaf was ready to strike from behind Tihuacan, but he suddenly stopped and backed away from the tiger.
For a few seconds, we were locked in a tense staring match, then Miloslaf stepped forward and swung his sword with a diagonal cut.
Tihuacan shifted just a bit to the right to dodge it, but Miloslaf quickly followed up, only to have him dodge again.
'Fire Arrow, get rid of that annoying swordsman!'
"Huh?"
While I was searching for something to use from Lene's potion, I was shocked by the words from the tiger, almost dropping the explosives I had.
Wait, this guy can talk!?
"Whoa! Magic doesn't work on me, you know!"
Even though the Fire Arrow hit, Miloslaf, unharmed, was ready to swing his greatsword down again.
But, hold on a second!
"Miloslaf, Tihuacan, please wait a moment!"
"Huh?"
'.........'
With my call to stop, both the man and the tiger froze in place.
That's right, I almost forgot.
There might be a chance for a conversation with this tiger.
* * *
"I'm really sorry for the sudden attack. My name is Ryuuji, and I came from the eastern continent. This is Miloslaf."
'.........'
"Oh, it's fine to talk. I think, Tihuacan, your words will reach us."
'...Is that so?'
Tihuacan still seemed cautious, but he sat down nicely and stopped being ready to attack.
I knew it.
The words Tihuacan spoke sounded clear, like a human talking right to our ears.
If we can talk, then there's no need to fight.
"Hey, hey, what's going on, Count? Why is a tiger talking?"
Miloslaf was staring wide-eyed at this strange scene, but I had seen something like this before, so I knew why it was happening.
"Magic Stone of Cashunat."
"...Oh! Wait, does this work on animals too!?"
"Remember the fire dragon at Lana's place? That one was tamed with this magic stone."
"No way..."
Miloslaf looked drained, mumbling "how boring..." as if remembering Flamme, the fire dragon.
You battle-crazy guy, it's better if we can avoid a fight.
I don't want to waste Lene's medicine on fighting demon beasts.
'This is surprising. Why can I communicate with its mind?'
Tihuacan spoke smarter than I expected... well, at least I can say he communicated well.
For an animal, he's pretty smart.
Maybe it's because he's a demon beast now.
"The magic stone– well, it's a kind of magic that gives power to others. Thanks to this stone, we can talk. Though, I'm the only one who has it."
'I see, that's useful.'
We do understand each other.
This one's really smart.
Maybe even smarter than some grown humans around here.
Oh, I need to get to the point.
I heard this tiger has attacked livestock but never killed a person.
That means there's a chance to negotiate.
Maybe even Mr. Clepa just got scared and didn't know what to do.
"Tihuacan, right now, people in town are scared because you showed up here. You're usually outside town, so why did you come in today?"
'I was hungry, so I wanted to eat a chicken.'
"........."
Tihuacan's quick answer left me speechless.
O-okay, I see.
Come to think of it, he sounds smart but he's still an animal.
He's just acting on instinct.
But he's still very smart.
So, maybe I can suggest something that helps both the town and Tihuacan.
"Mr. Clepa, can you come down from the tree?"
When I called to Mr. Clepa up in the tree, the old man nervously clung to the trunk and looked worried at Tihuacan.
'Is that tiger really okay?'
"He understands me, so it's okay. This will be a negotiation to make things better for both sides, and I want Mr. Clepa to join us."
'...Negotiation?'
The tiger tilted his big head, clearly not understanding what I was planning.
