Volume 4 Chapter 34 Interlude: Marquis and the Black Knight
This is from a third-person perspective.
As the sun began to set, Marquis Reichner visited the central barracks of Sartzstadt, accompanied by Miloslaf.
Of course, the purpose was to hear stories from those who took up arms in this town.
It was still unclear if the ones captured yesterday were spies from the Romanov Empire, as no one was saying anything.
They considered calling Suzu to use her binding magic for confirmation, but that hadn't happened yet.
"I see. So it's clear that the worship of Abnella in the Romanov Empire is twisted."
"Well, it's true that people in both the Quechua and Romanov Empires believe in God Abnella. But which side is truly warped? We'd have to ask the god themselves."
While waiting for the interrogation in one of the rooms at the barracks, Marquis Reichner listened to Miloslaf talk about the expedition to the Quechua continent.
Since Ryuuji wasn't there, they couldn't use binding magic, but the Church Knight from the Romanov Empire answered the questions honestly.
"There's no doubt that the Romanov Empire is more twisted. Their worship of Abnella is based on the beliefs of the Quechua people who arrived long ago, right? Since the Quechua Empire's ideas are the original ones and the Romanov Empire's beliefs are very different, it's clear that their methods are misinterpreted."
Miloslaf inwardly marveled at how Marquis Reichner neatly guided the explanation.
Although he hadn't gone into too much detail, the information he did share led to the correct conclusions about the Abnella faith.
"...As expected, a lord who governs well must indeed be very clever."
"Oh? Are you being sarcastic?"
Marquis Reichner responded to Miloslaf's potentially poisonous words with a sly,Nicodemus-like smile.
But the Black Knight shook his head, denying it.
"No, I mean it. The Romanov Empire's royalty has always been full of schemers. I think it's right to consider that their ideas have been mixed up and misinterpreted. Yeah, it's not just the royalty who are schemers."
Mid-conversation, Miloslaf made a correction.
The nobles of the Romanov Empire wouldn't hesitate to trample over others, even if they were close relatives.
"...Schemers... Certainly, there were an unusual number of poisonings, weren't there?"
"You've done your research. That's right. The Romanov nobles basically thrive on killing each other. Hearing that, I'm glad I was born a commoner."
The true nature of the Romanov Empire is that they serve poison even if it's discovered.
Both nobles and royalty spend their days in harsh battles, all for the sake of winning that one throne.
"...Looks like they're here."
Right after Miloslaf reacted, there was a knock on the door, and 3 guards came in, leading a thin man blindfolded and bridled like a monkey, forcing him onto a chair.
The blindfold and monkey harness were removed by one of the guards, revealing the man's face.
The man scanned the room he was in to assess the situation, but his face tensed up the moment he spotted a single Black Knight.
"Miloslaf...!"
The man tried to call out his name, but his words caught in his throat.
Miloslaf stared down at the man with a look of shock.
"Hey now, you know me, right? You're admitting you're a spy from the Romanov Empire? Don't tell me there aren't any smart guys left in <Gualerto>."
Although he had only been brought here as one of the rebellion's ringleaders, acknowledging Miloslaf, a Church Knight of the underground organization <Gualerto>, implied he was part of that group, just as he said.
The man seemed to have no intention of hiding anymore, as he glared at Miloslaf with a killing intent.
But the Black Knight, used to such stares, remained calm.
"You, Miloslaf! Have you betrayed the organization to side with Beistein?!"
"Half right, half wrong. I left the organization, but that doesn't mean I'm siding with Beistein. I can't defy them because I'm in a subordinate position."
After being defeated by Ryuuji, Miloslaf was subjected to subordinate magic by Suzu, forcing him to align with Beistein.
However, since his current master, Ryuuji, is lenient, he hasn't been subjected to interrogation by the subordinate magic, and he has a significant degree of freedom in his actions.
"Subordinate!? You're saying a man of such promise was defeated?!"
"Oh, the taste of defeat for the first time... it's pretty sweet, isn't it? But I don't plan to lose again, kukuku."
Miloslaf laughed, and Marquis Reichner raised his hand, "Can you stop there?"
It was lucky for him to know the man was from the Romanov Empire, but the fires everywhere were getting worse.
He thought he should use the time to get useful information.
"...Well, Mr. Spy from the Romanov Empire. You're the star here. Tell us everything you know?"
Marquis Reichner gave a scary smile he usually didn't show and said that.
