"(This attack feels *so close*... yet so far, Senior Rai!!) "
It was natural that Rai came up as a comparison since Rize often sparred with him.
Rai's fighting style was built on a solid, well-formed foundation.
His tactics followed the book, using theory as a base and adding many practical moves──a true *classic* style.
But the swordsmanship of the opponent Rize faced now, Alfonso, was different──
"Guh, ugh!"
"Just defense won't win you this."
Alfonso used only a single one-handed sword.
He switched hands quickly and launched a relentless stream of flawless attacks.
He'd fake a stab with his right hand, then instantly switch to his left to slash upward.
Or pretend to swing horizontally, then strike with the pommel instead.
His attacks were full of tricks, unlike Rai's straightforward, theory-based style.
If Rai's sword was steady and reliable, Alfonso's was the *sword of surprise*.
An evil art designed to trick and take down his enemy.
"Yaaahhh!!"
Rize screamed to push herself on, swinging her shield just in time.
Alfonso's unpredictable style was hard to counter because it ignored basics.
But once you got used to it, it quickly became a *reckless mess* that ignored the fundamentals.
While blocking the attacks, Rize found a pattern and caught the timing of the real strike.
She swung her shield along with the main slash to deflect the sword.
The sword tip was pushed off course.
Alfonso had only that one weapon──an opening appeared.
"──Hah!"
With a sharp breath, Rize's spear jab hit Alfonso.
But──
"Too soft."
Alfonso grabbed the spear shaft with his open left hand.
"Huh?"
Surprised, Rize froze for just a moment.
Then Alfonso pulled the spear toward himself, holding on tight.
Rize's body was pulled forward like a magnet toward Alfonso.
And so Alfonso brought her into an ultra-close combat, without the need for a sword or spear's reach.
