Volume 1 Chapter 21 Let's Use Earth Magic II
Cain was thinking with a wobbly head about what to do next.
'What spell should I try next, I wonder?'
He returned to the mansion with Benjamin and ate the breakfast waiting for them in the cafeteria.
There were no Japanese New Year's greetings, but he got the "sugar candy" he received every year from Luke and Lydia.
(Like a New Year's gift? That's what it seemed like)
His head, which had lost MP, felt the nutrients circulating, making the food taste better than usual.
"Cain, have you already managed to activate [magic]?"
Luke was surprised as he heard Benjamin's report.
"Is [magic] something you can just use so easily, Elder Brother Ben?"
Alice asked Benjamin, hearing their conversation.
"Well, usually it's a bit more of a struggle. Cain might just have a good affinity for [Earth magic]. You know, like a 'ground attribute' or something?"
"What do you mean by 'ground attribute'?"
"Some people with [magic] skills, though it's rare, have Mana with a certain attribute. When they use [magic] of that attribute, it's easier to activate and sometimes uses less 'Mana'."
Benjamin glanced over at Luke.
"Do you have one, Elder Brother Ben?"
"Nah, sadly I don't. They say that using [magic] for a long time can give you an attribute, so I'm in the process of testing that out."
Cain listened to the conversation, thinking 'Huh...'.

After breakfast, Cain was getting a lecture about [magic] in Benjamin's room.
"Cain, congrats on activating [magic]. Even among the academy students, it's rare for someone to be able to activate [magic] right after learning [magic operation]. It's really a shame it's [Earth magic] though."
Benjamin repeated what he had said earlier.
"Why is [Earth magic] a shame? 'Well, I guess there's a lot of plain magic, isn't there?'"
"They say there aren't many offensive [magic] spells in [Earth magic]. That's why not many [Earth magic] users join the knight order. Plus, there's not much research on high-level [Earth magic] users either."
"You were told it's a shame you can't join the knight order. I worried there might be other reasons too."
"Hey, doesn't Cain have any interest in the knight order?"
"I don't."
"W-Well, you don't have to be so clear about it. Brother Arthur and Chris will be sad."
Benjamin sighed a little as he spoke.
"Still, you're only 6 years old, and who knows about the future. If you train now, you might be able to pick up other [magic] skills too. So, shall we get started?"
Benjamin sat up straight and changed the subject.
"What I'm about to talk about is still a work in progress, so I'd like you to keep that in mind. Cain, you have a talent for [magic] and a much better understanding than the average 6-year-old, so I'll be teaching you. My main research is on 'why [magic] activation requires [Mana Control] skills.' You might understand this better from experience. Each [magic] skill has corresponding spells that pop into your head based on your level. But even if you can recite the spell, without [Mana Control] skills, you won't be able to activate it and might end up with a terrible 'explosion'."
Cain nodded while looking at My's hands, listening intently.
"On the other hand, if you only have [Mana Control] skills and don't know any spells, you can't recite them to activate [magic]. This is a result I verified with students at the academy. However, it is possible to 'release Mana' through [Mana Control] training, as we did."
Cain kept listening, thinking, 'Certainly, certainly.'.
"Next up, about the spells──'Ice Wall' and 'Stone Bullet' aren't exactly hard to chant magically. But it seems like if someone without [magic] skills hears it, it just sounds like random noise. And even if someone who can use it chants the spell, it still just sounds like regular words to them."
Cain thought, 'Huh?' and listened to the end of the story.
"Did you notice my expression? My conclusion is that [Mana Control] is a skill with the ability to convert spells and activate [magic]. So, I had Cain try my idea of [Mana Control] training to experience an expansion of magic that's usually not possible."
"You can't usually expand or shrink [magic]?"
