Volume 1 Chapter 9 Status IV
"Why do I feel so down?"
Michio asked, puzzled.
Luke looked Cain straight in the eye and began to speak.
"In our noble society, including my family, the [skill] you get from the 'ceremony of baptism' pretty much decides your future. If you get a combat [skill], you join the knight academy and then the kingdom's or a lord's knight order. If you get a magic [skill], you go to magic academy and join the knight order too. And if you get a political [skill], you go to the royal academy and become a civil servant for the kingdom or a lord. That's the usual path."
Michio listened to the talk with a "Hmph" kind of attitude.
"Everyone else has to leave home and find their own job. Most become adventurers, but not many succeed big-time."
Luke looked at Cain with a mix of pain and something else.
"Cain, you're the 4th son and won't inherit the family. You didn't get any [skills] that would make you fit for the knight order or as a civil servant. But I'm not giving up on you. Until you're 15, you'll learn all sorts of things and pick up some useful [skills]."
Lydia imagined Cain's future and tears flowed.
'Huh? They think even a lousy [skill] like that isn't on the table?'
Michio pondered this, a bit troubled.
"Father, Cain (I) will be fine. If I master [Earth magic], I think I can do all sorts of things. If that don't work out, I can make a field with [Earth magic]. And if I master the [Healing magic] I got from Mother Linore, I can heal the people of the domain. So I'll be okay."
Luke and Lydia looked at Cain in surprise.
"So, I have a favor to ask. I need the [Mana Control] skill to use [Earth magic], so I'd like to learn it. If you know how, could you teach me? Or could I get permission to go into the family library? I want to look into it myself."
Cain smiled mischievously and locked eyes with the two of them.
Luke, who had been frozen, rebooted.
"Right, right. There might still be a chance with [Earth magic]. Okay, let's write a letter to Benjamin and tell him to come home next break. He probably knows how to get the [Mana Control] skill. Let's also have him look into [Magic circle magic] at the magic academy."
"That's right, as parents, we can't give up. Let's do our best together, Cain."
Lydia said as she hugged Cain.
Benjamin is their second son, currently 14 years old and attending the magic academy.
Sister Alice told him in the carriage heading to the "Ceremony of Baptism" that he had acquired [Fire magic] and [Ice magic].
Since this world lets us use [magic] in our second life, we have to try out all sorts of possibilities.
He's still just 5 years old.
He has 50 years by this world's standards, so let's enjoy it!!.
Michio declared this to himself.
