Volume 3 Chapter 3 The Maid Acts as the Master's Substitute
A few days had passed since Act called Frederica.
In the Adventurers Guild, in the Guildmaster's Room.
Guild member Tooth was summoned by the Guildmaster.
"Ugh... I'm so nervous... Is this the famous 'Mr. Act's expulsion'?"
It was already well-known in the Guild.
Those who were found by Act and grew strong would be graduated from here by the Guildmaster.
"I wonder what it feels like... I've never been expelled by Mr. Act... I'm kind of looking forward to it!"
Tooth had been in the Guild for a while now.
He was called to the Guildmaster's Room to hear about his next job and graduation from Act.
"Thinking too much won't help. Let's go."
Tooth knocked on the Guildmaster's Room.
'Please come in.'
"Excuse me! Tooth is coming in...!"
The room had a calm atmosphere.
At the back was a huge desk.
In front of the Guildmaster's desk sat the top of this organization, Act Age...
"Huh? Frederica, is that you?"
Sitting at the desk was the beautiful silver-haired Frederica.
"Um... Where's Mr. Act?"
"...Did you not attend the meeting the other day?"
Frederica twitched her temple and asked.
"Oh, um... I'm sorry... I was resting."
"I see... The Master is not here."
"N-not here?"
"...Yes. I am acting as Guildmaster in his place. You could say I'm the 'acting Guildmaster'."
"I-I see..."
Frederica let out a heavy sigh.
"Now, Tooth. I have something to discuss with you."
"Oh, yes...!"
She placed some documents on the desk.
Both of them stood still.
"Um...?"
"What are you doing? Hurry up and take the documents."
"Y-yes..."
It was Frederica's job, the dedicated maid, to hand over the documents from Act.
But with Act absent and no secretary around, there was no one to pass them.
Tooth received the documents.
"That's how it is. Good work today."
"Huh!? Wait, hold on, sis! You didn't explain enough!"
Tooth was confused by the suddenness of it all.
Meanwhile, Frederica sighed.
"It's written inside, right? Read the documents. Good work today. You can leave now."
"Ugh... O-Okay..."
Tooth left the room, feeling a bit let down.
He closed the door and tilted his head.
He made his way down to the tavern on the first floor.
"Tooth, how was it?"
The party members were curious and called out to her.
"Well... Frederica was there."
"Ah, you didn't hear about the meeting the other day."
Tooth sat down in a chair and listened to her friends explain.
"Our Guild is going to open a branch in the Royal Capital!"
Tooth's eyes widened in surprise.
"So, the Gem of Heavenly Gift will be in the Royal Capital too! That's amazing...! Just like Mr. Act!"
"Yeah, more people have been joining lately. Mr. Act is over there working on setting up the Guild."
"I see... So Frederica is acting as Guildmaster here."
"Yeah, just temporarily. Mr. Act said he would be back soon."
Both of them looked a bit sad.
It was indeed unsettling without their beloved Guildmaster nearby.
"So, Tooth. Were you called in because of the expulsion?"
"W-Well... I just got handed the documents, that's all..."
"Let's see what's inside."
He took the documents out of the envelope.
Inside was a list of his next job and a notice of dismissal.
"So it really is an expulsion."
"I guess it means you have to go here."
The two exchanged glances and tilted their heads.
"Isn't that a bit too vague, sis...?"
Tooth had never been expelled by Act.
He heard from the Guild Members who left before, what it was like.
This time, the leaving ceremony was very simple.
"It's like... well..."
"It's too simple, a bit cold... Is it okay, Sis?"
Hmm, he tilted his head, and then—
"Oh, Mr. Tooth. Good work."
"Ms. Katrina."
Katrina, the beautiful head of the receptionists, came to Tooth and the others.
"I have something from Guildmaster... Mr. Act."
"From Mr. Act? What is it?"
He received a letter sealed with wax from Katrina.
'Tooth, you've worked hard. You have potential, you'll do well somewhere else.'
...Tooth's face brightened at Act's words of encouragement.
"This, this is what I need!"
"Hey. There's more written here!"
'I'm sorry I couldn't tell you to leave directly. It's a shame.'
Pfft, Tooth and the others burst out laughing.
It was just like the Guildmaster to be a little off.
'I don't know how Frederica told you to leave. But she's not used to it. Please understand. She doesn't mean any harm.'
Tooth and the others nodded at Act's follow-up.
"Well, yeah. Everyone is not used to it at first."
Tooth looked up at the Guildmaster's Room.
Katrina and the others too.
"I'm leaving, but I'll leave the rest to you. Everyone, support the Guildmaster... Sis Frederica!"
"Of course!"
Somehow, Frederica, like Act, is loved by the members.
...Will the new Guildmaster notice that?
