Volume 23 Chapter 12 Rescue

Al and the other three moved along the stone wall, using the bushes for cover. They pressed themselves against the wall, checking their surroundings again to ensure they hadn't been spotted by the guard above.

Once they reached this point, they should be out of sight from the lookout atop the stone wall.

 "Is this okay?"

'Just move forward two more meters... yeah, that's fine. There's a bush on the other side, so it's safe. Keep the height to two meters.'

After reaching the approximate position, Al confirmed in a hushed voice. Glee immediately responded.

She had judged where to make the hole based on what she'd seen earlier when she circled the area.

'Guildmaster Levy, is the lookout okay?'

 'It's fine.'

They also confirmed using 〈Telepathy〉. From here, they had to move quickly.

 "Let's go."

 〈Soften Stone〉

Al created a hole in the stone wall. The wall itself was about 50 centimeters thick, made entirely of stone, so altering its shape was no problem.

He attached the excess stone material as protrusions on the wall's surface, about ten centimeters each, to serve as footholds.

Having learned this spell and improved his skill by constructing fortress-like structures at the iron mine, Al handled the task with ease.

Seeing the footholds complete, Brenda nodded slightly and began climbing the wall nimbly, using the newly created protrusions.

Meanwhile, Al and the others crawled through the hole and entered, observing the area from the bushes. No human figures were in sight.

Above them was a stone passage about 2 meters wide for the lookout to pass through, supported by stone pillars placed about 5 meters apart.

After waiting a moment, noise arose above them. Likely, Brenda, who had climbed the wall, had started a fight.

In the center of the property, across three buildings from Al and the others, was a large mansion. Movement could be seen there, possibly because they had noticed the commotion Brenda caused.

Al, Reginald, and Orson exchanged glances and nodded. Brenda had likely drawn enough attention. The three of them rushed forward.

From their hiding spot, it was about 100 meters to the building where Guildmaster Levy was imprisoned—a roughly 20-second run. They dashed there and safely reached the building's wall.

Orson looked around to see if anyone was nearby. Reginald, clearly worried about Guildmaster Levy, had already prepared several spare weapons.

Al used 〈Soften Stone〉 again to create a hole large enough for people to pass through. A slight headache nagged him—he wondered anxiously how many more times he could safely use the spell.

As the hole opened, Reginald asked in a low voice if it was okay, then jumped inside.

 Crash!

Suddenly, the wall of the adjacent building collapsed, only about 20 meters away. It was a different building from the carriage house Al had assumed. Inside the collapsed wall were about ten men.

At their center stood Viscount Eugene's subordinate, Brook. Brook smirked, his expression malicious. Was this an ambush?

There was no reaction from 〈Detect Magic〉, so it was a complete surprise.

 "It's an ambush!"

Orson shouted, his voice carrying to Reginald, as he stepped forward to protect Al with his spear in hand.

 "Do it."

At Brook's instruction, 6 men charged towards them. Brook and 4 others stopped near the building that they had come out of. Among them, 2 were holding crossbows and one was holding a longbow.

 'Quick Magic Missile'

Al unleashed 'Magic Missile' towards the men charging at him with a sword in one hand.

The 'Magic Shockwave' spell would have been the best choice, but the distance to these men was too short and it didn't seem like it would make it in time. Four arrows had flown out.

It might be said to be enough in general, but as Al, he was not yet satisfied with his level of proficiency.

Out of the 6 men who came at them, 4 were knocked down by Al's 'Magic Missile' to their chests. The remaining 2 were stopped by Orson waving his spear, and one of them was pierced right there.

 "Aim at the blond boy."

The 3 people carrying ranged weapons at Brook's instruction all simultaneously shot arrows.

 〈Rapid Fire〉 - 5 shots

 〈Multi-Shot〉 - 2 shots

 〈Arrow Storm〉 - Rain of arrows

The ranged attackers unleashed their skills! Al wasn't familiar with these techniques.

The two crossbowmen used 〈Rapid Fire〉 and 〈Multi-Shot〉, both multi-attack skills. The longbowman used 〈Arrow Storm〉, a group attack skill that sent arrows arcing into the air to rain down over a wide area.

Fortunately, the combined seven straight shots from 〈Rapid Fire〉 and 〈Multi-Shot〉 were still blocked by the 〈Shield〉 spell Al had used earlier to rescue Eric. The hexagonal light protected them.

But a moment later, a storm of arrows descended in an arc upon Al and Orson.

 〈Quick Armor〉 - Full-body Metallic Armor

Al hastily cast the same spell he'd used when defeating the Lamia. It covered his entire body in metallic armor. He hoped it would withstand the arrow attack.

However, it was only partly effective. The arrows raining down on his head bounced off, but on the less curved back side, the arrowheads penetrated the armor. He felt warmth in several spots on his back and shoulders.

 "Ku... u..."

He couldn't help but cry out in pain. But then, the sound of arrows hitting ceased. Apparently, he'd narrowly avoided a fatal wound.

Meanwhile, Orson swung his spear to block the descending arrows. Most fell to the ground, but one that slipped past struck his left arm. Orson involuntarily groaned, "Ugh," and dropped his spear from the shock. Surviving with just that injury could be called lucky.

Al staggered as he waited for the arrow storm to end, then released 〈Quick Armor〉.

The arrows lodged in his shoulders and back didn't seem deep, and he let them fall to the ground.

 "Al, are you okay?"

Orson drew his sword and swung it downward with one hand, cutting down the man he'd been fighting. His left hand, still with an arrow stuck in it, remained limp.

Almost simultaneously, Reginald, looking flustered, jumped out from the open hole. Two armed men and women followed behind him.

 "Sorry!"

Reginald shouted and passed by Orson. Without slowing, he kicked the man who had been protecting Brook, then slashed at Brook.

The two who followed also attacked the crossbowmen and longbowman.

"The silver-haired man is Brook, Viscount Eugene's subordinate!"

Al felt something warm flowing down his back, but now was not the time to worry about that. His body still moved, so it should be fine. With Reginald and the others joining the fight, the numbers were almost even.

Brook would prefer to capture Al and hand him over to Viscount Parker if possible.

 〈Paralysis〉

Al's spell took effect, and the movements of the men still fighting, including Brook, suddenly slowed. Without resistance, everyone was affected.

 "Leave the rest to me!"

Reginald swung his sword, knocking Brook's weapon aside, then immediately pointed his blade at Brook's throat.

Nearby, the two crossbowmen were swiftly dispatched by Reginald's companions before they could draw their swords. Orson pointed his sword at the remaining longbowman.

Thus, the man Reginald had kicked and the longbowman could no longer resist and had no choice but to surrender.
