Volume 2 Chapter 15 The Mansion's Front Isn't a Speech Spot!

Pastor's goal, in the end, is probably to build a world ruled by Adventurers.

Still, that doesn't mean he can pull it off by force.

Adventurers make up only one ten-thousandth of the population. Sure, some could take down an army by themselves, but that's nowhere near enough to actually win a war.

The whole "Heroes saved the world so the world belongs to Adventurers" thing? That skips all the basic logic you'd need. No matter how much you say it, it'll never fly.

So Pastor came up with the concept of "Court Adventurers."

In a way, it's about using the "bad side" of how immigrants get used.

Associations for Adventurers──their branch offices──are already really good at handling complaints and doing chores, all that know-how built up over time.

Sometimes, stuff the government's administration is supposed to do ends up getting fixed just because an Adventurers' association branch is around. Happens all the time.

But there has to be a line between them and the government.

Adventurers can't just become government officers as Adventurers, and the government shouldn't be cooking up ways to absorb them, either.

If you want a bad example: if they got hired inside the government, they'd get a lot more chances to see "secret info" only the government should have.

But even then, they're still Adventurers──defying the Adventurers' Association's orders would be pretty much impossible.

So, stuff that's meant to be kept hidden inside the government ends up leaked back to Association headquarters all the time.

Letting Adventurers, who can waltz in anywhere under the cover of neutrality, work as government staff? That means even a total foreigner, whose birthplace you don't even know, could get a job deep in the government. In the end, this just makes it harder for the government to actually choose and hire its own people.

Skills and know-how are meant to be passed down, but when it's Adventurers doing the job, there's no sense of "these are our countrymen."

They often slack off on boring or tough work, and the turnover rate is sky-high anyway.

To put it bluntly: it just makes it super easy for the association to slip in spies.

...As the 'answer' to the evil, this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

Basically, setting up a 'Court Adventurers' framework is the 'worst level of deregulation'.

And Pastor is aiming for this.

In a way, he was smart to choose this method.

Adventurers, who claim neutrality, can go anywhere, but being able to work in the 'court' using various tactics, if there are a few precedents, will become a fait accompli in many countries.

And that will lead to the precedent that 'Adventurers can work in any country without any restrictions'.

As 'invasion of a nation through immigration', it's a logical tactic to put the realization of 'Court Adventurers' as the first step.

Moreover, because the Adventurers group called the 'Luster Report' defeated the Demon Lord, many people actually think that 'this is the age of Adventurers'.

 He's really smart.

 He's smart, but...

From the perspective of someone who understands the 'evils of deregulation related to immigration', the stench is too strong.

* * *

"...I'm thinking, do those guys think the front of people's houses is some kind of speech spot?"

Horace looks out the window on the second floor.

From there, he can see a wide garden and, beyond the walls surrounding the property, a 'platform' has been prepared, and Cedal is giving a speech.

"The hero community defeated the Demon Lord. But, that hero built a mansion in such a remote country and doesn't have much of a 'position'! This is unacceptable! The hero who saved the world should be given a corresponding position! Therefore, as 'Court Adventurers', being given a position in the core of the nation is the right thing to do! Don't you think it's the right thing to do!?"

If the words of the soldiers at the time of Excalibur's arrest are true, Pastor should have planned to put Cedal as a Court Adventurer.

However, for some reason, or due to some course correction, it seems to have become a story that the 'hero' should become a 'Court Adventurer'.

Cedal doesn't seem dissatisfied, but you can tell he's wondering who wrote the script as the words flow smoothly from his mouth.

"The hero defeated the Demon Lord. Now it's the age of Adventurers! A hero who walks the forefront of such an era should be given a status that symbolizes the times. Even though the Divine Blood Travels are divided, the 'hero who saved the world' has a 'greater good' beyond that domain!"

It's the era of Adventurers now.

Lately, he has been hearing that phrase a lot... but as Horace, he couldn't care less whose era it is.

(Safety, peace of mind, the ability to create. A society where that's possible will develop. Rulers should ensure that safety and peace. That's all I think they need to do...)

Murmuring idealistic thoughts to himself, Horace looks at Cedal with a mix of amazement and disbelief.

"You folks must have gripes too! Specifically in this country, the minerals from the Great Mine of Gold World (Kinsekai) should be prioritized for our citizens. We're just getting the scraps. It's not right. We're the ones who mined those minerals! We have the right to use what we've earned freely. If the hero gets the status of 'Court Adventurers,' then Adventurers and citizens would be on equal footing. That way, the minerals Adventurers get can be used freely by them."

He's skipping over a few necessary arguments, but presenting 'immediate benefits' is key in a speech, right?

"I'll say it again. The hero who saved the world must have 'status' ──"

 "Cedal. Shut up already."

 "Huh!? ...Oh, Mr. Ivan."

Cedal was happily giving his speech, but here comes his guild master, Ivan, from his SS-rank guild, 'Worldsworn.'

Ivan has come to put a stop to it.

"Oh my, Mr. Ivan. Do you have a problem with his words?"

Pastor steps in, seemingly to rein in Ivan who's trying to stop the speech.

"Isn't it a problem even before discontent? He's spouting some real nonsense."

Ellie walks out of the mansion and approaches them while talking.

 "...Huh, what?"

All the big shots suddenly showed up, and Cedal has no idea what's going on.

He was probably just speaking up in place of Pastor, the HQ officer who doesn't actually have the right to make a speech.

It's still the first day, and he thought, 'Things will only start happening from here.'

But now, with all this happening right out of the gate, his brain is in a total mess.

"...Ivan. Long time no see. So you actually came to this town?"

Meanwhile, Horace is just chilling, gazing out the window like none of this concerns him.
