Volume 1 Chapter 42 Let's Create a Path III

Cain knocked on the door to the office, softly but confidently, with Gardy standing quietly beside him.

 "Cain here."

 "Yes, come in."

Randolph, hearing permission, opened the door without delay.

"I saw the plan from Randolph──your detailed proposal──and the mention of the 'stone pavement' around the well. I also saw that. I want to officially request you to turn the estate roads into stone pavement."

 "Eh? As a job?"

Cain blinked, caught off guard by Luke's unexpected words.

"Yes. Even just around the well takes a full day. If we're to turn the estate roads into stone──about 5 days' work. To let you do it without official approval──that's not something a ruler can permit."

The man next to him, Randolph, nodded firmly.

"And once the estate roads are done, I want the main street of this town──this street──to be paved with stones, too."

"The main road of the town? That's about a kilometer long, right?"

Cain had only seen it a few times, but he remembered the main street clearly.

The main street was at least 5 meters wide.

"Father, 2 people can't manage that──probably will take a whole year to finish."

Just imagining it made Cain feel like he was in some kind of cruel game.

"No, I want it done in about 2 months. And I'll give Randolph a budget of 200 gold coins──just think about it. Randolph, I'm counting on you."

 "Understood," Randolph replied calmly.

'Something might happen in 2 months? Well, first things first──the estate roads come first.'

Cain, Gardy, and Randolph moved to the lounge to discuss the plans in detail.

"Where should we start? Measuring the size of the road for the stone pavement? Or maybe how to speed up the work?"

Cain looked at Randolph and Gardy, pondering aloud.

"Young Master Cain, could you please explain the steps for laying the stone pavement? I'd like to estimate how much work can be done in a day."

Cain explained yesterday's work to Randolph, drawing diagrams as he went.

Gardy also chipped in, mentioning what was tough and how to line things up straight more easily.

"Honestly, it'd take a huge workforce to turn 'main street' into stone pavement in just 2 months──without relying heavily on Young Master Cain's [magic]. Over 70% of it relies on that, after all. That's... a bit of a stretch."

Randolph stared off in thought, pondering deeply.

"Yes, if it's me, I can handle it. Laying stones is tough, sure, but [magic] makes it pretty manageable."

 Cain said, confidently.

 "That's not exactly... well, hmm."

"Right now, we're just carefully placing stones into the 'mud,' but if we pre-line all the stones first and then cover them with dirt──filling the gaps──then drying and hardening the 'mud,' we could cut down the time significantly."

 Cain suggested a shortcut.

"Sir Cain, I don't fully get [magic] yet, but you make stones with [magic], turn soil into 'mud' with it, and then we just line everything up. Can't you just transform soil directly into stone with [magic] too?"

Gardy chimed in with an interesting idea.

"Gardy, that's it! That's exactly it. Since [magic] is all about the image in your mind, if you focus really clearly on transforming the soil into stone, you might actually pull it off. Gardy's a genius!"

 Cain exclaimed excitedly.

Gardy blushed, flattered by the praise.

Randolph just kept silent, lost in thought.

"Let's try it right away! We shouldn't go in blind──better to practice first at the training ground. Gardy, you're up. Randolph, what about you?"

Cain asked as he and Gardy got up from their seats.

"I'll prepare a little before heading out, young master."

 "See you later, then."

Cain dashed forward, ready to begin.
