Volume 1 Chapter 46 Let's Create a Path VII

 "Alright, it's done!"

In front of Cain, a street in Sanroze made of earth was now perfectly replicated, just like the map he had spread out earlier.

The other 3 stood frozen, shocked by the sight.

"Well, it's not perfect. I kinda just guessed for the parts I didn't see today. Next time, I want to go back and check everything more carefully."

Randolph felt dizzy at Cain's muttering.

Despite having only seen a map, Cain had recreated the town as if he'd been there countless times.

This wasn't just about convenience──if other houses or the royal family found out, it would be a huge problem.

After all, with just a map and a few hours spent walking through the streets, he had created a 3-dimensional model capable of strategizing an attack on the town.

"Next, I'll shrink it down to fit in the meeting room."

Without waiting for a response, Cain started chanting.

By the time anyone noticed, half the model had already been shrunk down next to him.

"Gardy, Randolph. Can you take this to the meeting room? Gently, just place it on that board."

The two, now snapped back into action, wordlessly carried the finished model to the meeting room.

A while later, Noel noticed what was happening.

She grabbed the map and walked into the room, a little late.

The 4 of them stared at the street model together.

Cain made adjustments here and there, listening to everyone's input as he worked his magic.

"Looking at it this way, the main road gently slopes toward the castle gates. If we add a drainage ditch, we won't have water collecting on the road."

"Sir Cain, what's a drainage ditch?"

Gardy asked, curious about the unfamiliar term.

"A drainage ditch is a trench along the edge of the road that channels rainwater off to prevent puddles from forming."

As he explained, Cain used his magic to create a drainage ditch on the model.

"Sir Cain, what happens to the water in the ditch?"

Now, it was Noel's turn to ask a question.

"Normally you'd just dump it into the sewer and be done with it, but... we don't even have that. So we just build ponds out on farmland to store it? Although, who knows what people are chucking in there. Hey, Noel, what are you doing about wastewater in the town right now?"

Cain remembered that awful stench hanging in the streets.

"I don't really know what a sewer's like, but... at the moment, I think people just dump wastewater wherever's convenient."

'So that's it, huh? Just tossing filth anywhere? How do they not get hit by plague?'

Cain pinched the bridge of his nose and groaned.

"In bigger towns, they carry it outside the walls and store it in ponds. Then, uh... slimes take care of the rest, maybe?"

'Wait. That's the whole plan? Slimes eat the garbage? Do they just catch wild slimes or what?'

Everyone except Cain listened to Noel, nodding along like it all made perfect sense.

"Whenever there's trash or dirty water, slimes just show up and clean it right up. Well──not just clean, exactly. They just take in anything that isn't water and melt it all down."

Noel explained this, looking smug like she'd just shared some grand secret.

Cain wasn't really buying it, but he couldn't bother arguing anymore.

"Randolph, is it okay if we make some holes in the wall? Just small drains, to pipe stuff outside. I mean... I can't pull slimes inside the town. Is that a no-go?"

"Depends on how you do it, young master. If it doesn't mess with the defenses, it might work. Still... no one's tried this before."

For once, Randolph was actually thinking it over.

"Noel, how far from the wall should we build those ponds? Like, a kilometer or so? Is that close enough?"

"They don't need to be that far. Slimes are weak monsters──rookie adventurers even take them out for practice."

'I can't wrap my head around this fantasy solution. Best not to think too hard. It's settled, so... whatever.'

Cain decided to stop overthinking it.
