Volume 1 Chapter 49 Hero's Cuisine II

Cain flipped open the Book of the Hero, explaining the recipes left behind by the Hero themself. Since there were a lot of people this time, he'd gotten special permission to bring the Book of the Hero into the meeting room.

First step: check if they actually had the seasonings listed in the Book of the Hero. They had "mayone" (mayonnaise) and "seiyu" (soy sauce), but no ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, miso, or mirin. Having seiyu (soy sauce) was a lifesaver.

Still, if there's soy sauce, why the heck is there no miso? They're kind of the same hassle. That needed some digging into.

For the record, there was "rice" too, though only a tiny amount got made. But since the fields were so far away, they had to give up on it this time.

Next, ingredients: there was butter, but apparently it was made from goat's milk, and super hard to get. So, obviously, no cow's milk either.

The stuff they wanted most──potato, tomato, onion, and garlic──was actually easy to find here. The names were all just a tiny bit off, though. Weird, right?

As for meat, they had things close enough: wyly-bull (beef), orc (pork), and horn chicken (chicken). With all this, a lot of the recipes in the Book of the Hero looked doable.

All that was left was to check which dishes didn't exist in this world yet.

"Head Chef Lloyd, I'm about to list some dishes. Tell me if you know them, okay?

Number one: Salad with potato, ham, and mayo.

Number 2: Macaroni salad, with ham, onion, and mayo.

Number 3: Ground up beef-like and pork-like meat, rolled up and grilled.

Number 4: Pork meat wrapped in fine bread and cooked in oil.

Number 5: Horn chicken flavored with salt and soy sauce, coated with flour and fried.

Number 6: Omelette made with eggs and sugar.

Number 7: Horn chicken, minced and flavored with soy sauce.

Which of these have you never heard of or tried?"

Cain talked as he scribbled the list on parchment.

Head Chef Lloyd frowned, thinking it over before answering.

"I don't think I've ever even heard of──let alone tasted──any except for number one and number 7. What about you, Mr. Randolph?"

"Let me see... Number 3 kind of sounds like those meat dishes where you gather scraps and grill them, but since it's something the 'Hero' wrote down, maybe it's special?"

Randolph answered while stroking his chin.

"Cain, why don't you tell Lloyd to make everything and see how it turns out? Maybe judge after actually seeing and tasting it?"

Luke pushed for the outrageous idea of making everything.

"Understood, Father. I'll gather the ingredients and have it prepared. Chef Lloyd, could you make a list of what we need to purchase?"

 "Understood, Young Master Cain."

Chef Lloyd replied with a cheerful smile.

* * *

Chef Lloyd somehow managed to gather all the ingredients over a week, and he made everything.

The most unexpected challenge was the "oil."

There's no such thing as salad oil in this other world.

He made "oil" from the fat of an orc, which ended up with a bit of a "taste," but since there were no substitutes, he had to let it go this time.

 "Please, help yourselves."

Chef Lloyd said to Luke and Lydia as the dishes were brought into the dining hall.

"Got it, let's taste first, then you can explain slowly."

As soon as Luke finished speaking, Alice and Lydia started serving themselves from the dishes.

Cain, who had already tried everything during the trial, knew that all the dishes were almost identical to what Michio had eaten, so he observed with ease.

 ""Delicious""

 Alice and Lydia's voices resonated.

Alice had taken a bite of the "fried egg" and Lydia the "macaroni salad," sharing their impressions.

"This tender meat is delicious. The sauce and juices blending make it even better."

Luke said while eating the "hamburger."

"The orc meat wrapped in bread has a nice 'crunch' and a strong savory flavor that's delicious."

Randolph muttered as he tasted the "fried pork cutlet" with knife and fork.

For Cain, it was the only option without sauce.

After the higher-ups in the mansion tasted it, dishes like the "macaroni salad," "hamburger," and "fried egg" were determined to be on the dinner menu, perhaps even eaten by the Shield Margrave himself.

Cain, however, wanted to eat it with "rice."
