"Listen up! Everyone, get out of the castle gate and form a wedge in front of the Great Deep Forest side of the castle wall. First, the archers on the wall will fire. Then the cavalry charges, attacks once, and retreats. They'll lure the enemy back. Each unit, stay close and hold the line. Got it? Two of you on one enemy. No need for knightly honor with monsters. If you're hurt, fall back immediately. Dying over something like this is a betrayal of Sir Luke. Got it? Don't you *dare* die! Let's go!"
""""Ugh! Ugh!""""
All the soldiers roared.
"Open the gate!"
When Knight Captain Argyle announced it, the castle gate opened.
Argyle, the knight captain, led the way toward the Great Deep Forest side of the castle wall.
Cain was riding on a horse with Benjamin, so he couldn't see well in front.
But he felt his excitement rising.
After a while, they reached the Great Deep Forest side of the castle wall and formed a line.
The third unit of the skirmishers was ordered to stand by on the right.
"Cain, when the charge starts, hit the monsters on the right with your [attack magic]. You don't need to kill them. Just use [magic] to stop them. Then our elder brother or Chris will finish them off. Got it? Don't kill them, just 'stop their advance.'"
Benjamin, with an "anger" he'd never shown before, gave Cain the order.
"Y-yes, sir!"
Cain was overwhelmed by the "anger" and could only say that.
"Clang! Clang! Clang!" "We see them! The enemy! 500 meters ahead, at the edge of the forest!"
The monsters that appeared in front of them along with the castle wall's bell were visible.
Goblins were swarming toward them.
"Something's wrong. Why are the goblins lined up and coming toward us? There's a higher-ranking one! Search for it!"
The captains around him shouted a warning.
"It's not just goblins! There are orcs! Orcs are here!"
A hazy figure, nearly 2 meters tall, appeared behind the goblin.
The mixed breed of goblin and orc monsters halted about 300 meters in front of the knights.
At this distance, the eerie sounds of goblins and orcs could be heard.
Cain managed to move his body somehow from behind Benjamin and looked forward to see the goblins and orcs.
'Whoa, this is fantasy! Orcs are bigger than I imagined. "Thump, thump, thump"──what's that? I can hear my heartbeat so loudly.'
"All units, battle stations! Commanders, seek out and prioritize the elimination of the higher-ranking monsters!"
Orders flew from the Knight Captain Argyle.
The monsters let out cries of "Gyagyagya" and "Buhibhi" as they charged forward.
As the monsters reached 200 meters, arrows were released from atop the castle walls, drawing a mountainous trajectory and striking the monsters.
Several monsters fell to the ground, hit in vital spots, but the sheer number of monsters kept their momentum going.
"Cavalry, charge!"
At the Knight Captain Argyle's shout, a cavalry of 20 horses charged.
Then the cavalry clashed with the monsters.
The dying cries of the monsters and the sound of horse hooves mixed into a deafening noise that echoed around.
And then, the cavalry pushed through.
"All units, charge!"
With the Knight Captain Argyle's command once more, the entire knight order started their charge with a loud "War, Waaah!"
'What, what is this!? This is real!'
The heartbeat and the surrounding noise had turned into a "terrible sound" that was attacking Cain.
"Cain, pull yourself together! It's time, we're starting our charge too. Don't you dare stop 'Circulation'!"
Benjamin turned his hand backward and smacked Cain's back, sending out an order.
"Y-Yeah, okay"
Thanks to Benjamin's "order," the noise died down, and there was a moment of calm as he began "Circulation" as instructed.
'Can't panic, if I panic, I die. Gotta start with the small stuff!'
Michio started to recall the actions he took during a time when a mistake almost led to panic.
Once he regained a bit of composure, "Circulation" flowed smoothly, and with it, his field of vision expanded, allowing him to see his surroundings.
"The third squad charged forward! Follow me!!"
With Captain Wilson's shout, the third squad launched their attack.
The horses carrying Benjamin and Cain bolted ahead.
"Lord Benjamin, [attack magic] up ahead!"
Benjamin cast his [magic] almost instantly, freezing the monsters in the path of the charging third squad.
Wilson immediately charged in, slicing through the monster horde.
Cain, fighting the wild horse, fired "Stone Bullet" after "Stone Bullet" at the monsters on the right, amplifying the power with "Circulation."
He'd used up all ten "Circulation" charges just as they broke through the monster group.
The third squad immediately turned to regroup.
Cain started another ten "Circulation" charges, getting ready to use them again.
'Ugh, what the hell is this? So gross... I'm gonna puke. I didn't ask for this level of realism!'
Fighting back the urge to vomit, he kept repeating "Circulation" and [magic].
After the third charge, the third squad gathered a short distance away from the fighting.
"Everyone, check your status!"
Captain Wilson gave the order.
"Cain, you okay?"
Someone called out from the right.
Character Notes:
Luke - Cain's father.
Argyle - The knight captain leading the soldiers.
Benjamin - The second son from the first wife, wise and calm, experienced in magic.
Chris - Third son from the first wife, earnest and impressed by Cain.
Wilson - Captain who is leading the third squad, appears to be a capable leader.
