Volume 2 Chapter 1 Session for Reporting Proceedings
A meal in the kitchen?
Afterward, Cain was sleeping in his own room.
He still felt the pain from muscle ache and Mana drain, which was why Lydia had advised him to take a day off to rest.
"Even after sleeping the whole day, the healing isn't catching up. Just how bad was the damage?"
He was recalling the battle from 2 days ago.
The unpleasant voice of the goblins, the stench of the orcs, and the overwhelming presence of the orc knights.
Just remembering it sent a chill down his spine.
"Elder Brother Arthur and the others sure can fight. I'm gonna hold back. Maybe I can't go dungeon-crawling like a light novel protagonist. But still, I want some meat. I was thinking of going hunting once I can get out. Ahh..."
Cain had been thinking of his current life as a game, but since the battle 2 days ago, he felt the weight of reality.
As he pondered various things, he gradually felt sleepy and dozed off again.
* * *
Just as Cain started thinking in bed, in the conference room, Knight Captain Argyle and the captains of each squad had gathered for a meeting.
Luke and Lydia, along with the 3 brothers, entered the conference room from the kitchen.
"Everyone stand, salute the Lord."
The knights stood up and saluted with their hands on their chests.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, let's begin."
Luke looked at the members of the knight's order waiting in the conference room and took his seat.
"First of all, let's start with the reconnaissance report of the Great Deep Forest from the 5th squad."
Knight Captain Argyle gave instructions to the captain of the 5th squad.
"Yes, we went further than yesterday. I'll report on the results of the reconnaissance of the Great Deep Forest. Following the trail of the monsters, we reached a river where goblins had been sighted, as reported by the adventurers' guild. Further down the path, we came across an open area with a dozen or so houses-like structures. There were signs that goblins had lived there, but now it's just an empty space."
"Could it be that all the monsters that attacked us were from there? But the number doesn't add up with just those houses. There might be more of the same kind in the area. Find them and burn them."
Luke gave the order with a bitter expression.
"Understood! We'll keep the recon mission going and wipe out any ruins of settlements we find!"
Knight Captain Argyle repeated the order.
"Alright, next. Give me the details of the recent battle. Each squad leader, go ahead. Don't worry if there's some overlap──I want to hear every angle. There was a lot we couldn't see from the top of the wall, so tell us exactly what happened out there."
Luke prompted the captains to start reporting on the fight.
In order, starting from the First Captain, each squad leader described how their teams fought the monsters, each from their own perspective.
All the captains mentioned that Cain's healing magic had saved them.
"When it came to fighting goblins, that 2-on-one strategy worked out pretty well. Against orcs and orc knights, though, we'll need better coordination──and each soldier still needs to get stronger. Anyone got ideas? Speak up."
The captains glanced at each other and seemed to be whispering back and forth, but nobody spoke up.
Arthur said,
"Father, I have a suggestion from Arthur. May I speak?"
"Alright. Let's hear it."
"Thank you. I suppose it goes without saying, but the Sanroze knights mainly train for fighting people. In the old days, there were monster attacks all the time, so we didn't need special anti-monster training. But now, we only get practical experience against monsters a few times a year, during training exercises. Isn't that... kind of an issue? So I propose we send out small squads into the Great Deep Forest for recon, and have them hunt monsters while they're there. If we let them keep half the money from selling monster parts as a special bonus, I think morale will go way up. The Royal Capital knights go into dungeons regularly for monster combat practice, so I suggest we do the same in Sanroze territory."
"Hmm, anti-monster training, huh... Knight Captain Argyle, look into whether that's doable and get back to me."
Knight Captain Argyle answered, "Yes, sir!"
Luke said, "Next up──about that big, wide-range healing magic Cain used earlier. What exactly happened out there? Benjamin, fill us in."
Benjamin stood up and started his explanation.
"Yeah, so... after Chris got slashed by that Orc Knight──well, that's what happened. I seriously didn't realize back then that all that light spreading out was [healing magic]."
"I see, so that's how it went down... About this special [healing magic], you are strictly forbidden to leak anything else. Make sure every squad member gets the memo. As for the rest, since a bunch of the townsfolk have already seen it, give out orders to spread the word openly."
"Understood!"
The whole order of knights answered in perfect unison.
"Randolph, what do you think we should do about the report to His Majesty?"
Luke turned to Randolph with a troubled look on his face.
"Yes, sir! In this case, I think it would be best to consult with our immediate superior, Margrave Shield, and let them do the reporting. If we try to hide anything, it could look like we're rebelling. I mean, if you think about it, having an army that can heal only its own side constantly... that's huge."
Randolph kept his voice low, but there was a sharp tension in it.
"Alright then, I'll put Cain's situation in a letter. Lydia, when you visit Margrave Shield after the New Year, take it to him for me."
"Understood, indeed," Lydia answered, then lowered her gaze, looking thoughtful.
"That concludes today's debriefing. Good work out there, everyone──you all deserve a proper rest."
"Everyone, stand! Salute the Lord!"
Everyone except for Luke and Lydia stood and saluted.
