Volume 2 Chapter 2 The Day We Overcame
"Alright, I feel refreshed after that nap. The pain in my body is much better too. I'll head to the kitchen and grab a drink."
He went to the kitchen to rehydrate after waking up.
In the kitchen, someone was dismantling a huge chunk of meat?
It was happening.
The meat had been properly bled, and no blood was coming out even when cut.
He had seen a mountain bird being butchered before, and it was quite a shocking sight.
"Lloyd, that meat is pretty big, what kind of meat is it? The fat and lean parts look beautiful and delicious, right?"
He peeked at the meat while asking.
"Young Master Cain, are you awake? This meat is from the belly of the Orc Knight that the young masters defeated, it looks delicious, doesn't it?"
"Ugh, I had a feeling, but I didn't expect it to be Orc Knight meat... I've completely lost my appetite. See ya!"
Feeling gloomy, he was about to leave the kitchen when his collar was grabbed.
"Gah, what are you doing?! It got caught in my throat..."
Turning around, Lloyd was there with a terrifying expression!
Cain exclaimed, "Hii!"
"What kind of nonsense are you spouting, huh?"
Seething with anger, he glared at Cain, his tone even changing.
"How can you not eat something so delicious? Besides, you can become stronger by eating the weak, are you refusing?"
"But, I almost got killed by it. The fear comes back when I see it."
"Wait here for a bit."
Seeing Cain, who began to tremble with fear while looking down, Lloyd grabbed the meat and started grilling it in a frying pan.
Along with the sound of the meat sizzling, a violently good smell of good fat and meat burning came.
Cain swallowed the saliva that had filled his mouth, 'What is this good smell?' He couldn't take his eyes off the frying pan.
The grilled meat was placed on a plate and presented to Cain.
Cain, even then, cautiously stabbed the meat with a fork and put it in his mouth.
"How is it? Delicious, isn't it?"
"Delicious, incredibly delicious!!"
"You... still won't eat it?"
"I'm sorry! I'll eat it! Please, let me eat it!"
"Alright! I'm gonna grill a ton tonight, so eat it all up!"
There, Lloyd had his usual, gentle, satisfied smile.
"With this good meat, I wanna make that dish, ya know? I read it in the 'Hero's Recipe' and I got hungry!"
"Alright, I'll make it, bring the recipe here."
"I'll be right back, Lloyd!"
"I wonder if Sir Luke is worried, but I think I can get over it?"
* * *
"First, make the pork belly into a block and grill all 4 sides to seal in the juices. Then, put in water and wine and simmer over medium heat for about an hour. At the same time, add thinly sliced ginger and the green parts of the green onions."
Lloyd followed the instructions and started cooking.
"What do I do after simmering for an hour? How do I season it?"
"Um, take out the meat and put it in another pot with hot water, soy sauce, sugar, and honey, and simmer for another 45 minutes. That'll make the fat melt and the meat tender. Also, it said it's good to boil some boiled eggs with it."
"By the way, what's the name of this dish?"
"Um, it's 'Kakuni (simmered pork belly)', I think?"
'Finally, I can eat Kakuni. I've wanted to eat it since I saw the recipe. I'm so glad I wrote it down!'
"Alright, it's done. Oh, wow, the fork goes right in, it's so tender!"
Lloyd, slightly excited, plated the Kakuni in a deep dish.
The kitchen was filled with the delicious smell of sweet and savory soy sauce, and the other cooks and a few maids who had been drawn by the smell were watching with bated breath.
"A lot of people gathered, huh? Well, should we all try it?"
Everyone nodded in agreement at those words.
Kakuni was distributed to everyone, and when Cain started eating, everyone immediately started devouring it.
Voices of "Delicious!" and "Tasty!" were heard.
"This is delicious! And with a slightly strong flavor, it might be even better with ale."
It seemed that Lloyd also liked it.
While everyone was tasting it, and saying "Just a little more, just a little more," it was all gone.
"It's all gone! Even the ones for Sir Luke!"
"Oh well, there's no helping it now. We can't make it in time, so why not just do it tomorrow? I can tell Father that the new dish I tried making was delicious, and we'll serve it tomorrow. What do you think, Randolph?"
Before he knew it, Randolph had been roped into the tasting event.
"Very well, let us report that today's dish was a 'tasting' prototype. In exchange, Lloyd, the head chef, please prepare a large quantity for tomorrow."
"Got it, leave it to me!"
That evening, the meal was a steak made from Orc Knight meat.
It was delicious, of course, but it didn't surpass the horns.
The tasting group ate their meal, already looking forward to the next day.
"Delicious, I'm so happy."
Had Cain grown to like this world even more?
