Volume 2 Chapter 30 Is Traveling by Carriage Boring?
Cain excitedly went to the box wagon and asked Lydia for permission to sit on the driver's seat until the next rest stop. When he received a positive response, he waited with a smile, but the answer he got back was...
"What are you thinking? If you, who haven't prepared for this season, sit on the driver's seat for too long, you'll catch a cold right away! I won't allow it!"
He was clearly told no. Stunned by the rejection, he was about to feel down when Lala extended a helping hand.
"Lady Lydia, if it's just the condition of the town, how about watching from the back of the covered wagon? It would be much warmer than the driver's seat. Plus, you could wrap up in a camping blanket."
"Hmm, if that's the case, you shouldn't catch a cold. Alright, but only until the next rest stop."
"Mother Lydia! Thank you so much!"
Cain grinned from ear to ear and hugged her. Lydia chuckled and patted his head.
After a moment of happiness, Cain slowly let go and headed towards the covered wagon.
Inside the covered wagon, various bags were stacked in front, blocking the view. The back of the wagon also had items piled up, leaving only enough space for about 2 people to sit.
"Did I do something wrong to Lala?"
As Cain was surprised by the tight space in the wagon, Lala approached from behind.
"Sir Cain, please don't worry. I was lonely by myself, so I'm just happy to be with you. Now, let's get on the wagon, shall we?"
Cain was helped by Lala and climbed onto the wagon. Next was Lala's turn, but the distance from the ground to the wagon was about 1 meter, with the wagon walls being 50 cm high. Watching her closely, Lala bent her knees slightly, then jumped straight up and landed in the wagon. Her maid skirt fluttered when she landed, but she quickly pressed it down with her hand.
"Sorry for the unsightly display," Lala said, slightly bowing her head, and Cain, feeling awkward, also looked down.
"Now, Sir Cain, please sit here. We'll be leaving soon."
Cain sat down as instructed, on top of several layers of blankets.
"Excuse me... It's cold, so let's get under the blanket together."
Lala wrapped herself around Cain from behind, sitting and embracing him tightly with a blanket.
"What are you doing, Lala?"
Cain felt his heart race from the soft touch at the back of his head.
"Well, Sir Cain is cute, and I'm keeping you warm so you don't catch a cold. If you did, Lady Lydia would scold me. I'll make sure to keep you nice and toasty♪"
As the two of them exchanged words, the carriage started moving. The sway was indeed greater than that of a box carriage, but it was Cain who felt it, being held by Lala from behind.

"You can sleep well in this sway, right? Even if you do, my arms are holding you tight, so you won't be able to move."
Cain muttered as he felt Lala's quiet breathing on his head while she rested on his back and neck.
"Now, let's not enjoy this too much. We must accomplish our goal. The width of the street..."
The street was about 6 to 7 meters wide, but in places where the wheels left tracks, the carriage shook violently. Occasionally, the vibrations were accompanied by a gritty sound.
"Paving the entire street with stone might make horses slip. Maybe it's better to leave one meter as dirt? I'll ask Knight Captain Argyle later."
As for drainage, it's not realistic to build sewers in the town. Should he add 'kerbs' instead?
Despite the difficulty of moving in his current state, Cain spent 2 hours gathering information on the street conditions.

"Creak, creak, creak" The box carriage and the canopy carriage came to a stop at the entrance of the village. Villagers were lined up in front of the door of the box carriage, ready to greet those disembarking. This was Tonga village, located one day's carriage ride from Sanroze's town. With a population of about 150, it was a fairly large village. Being on the street path, it had a fair amount of hustle and bustle due to merchants and travelers passing through.
Lala opened the door of the box carriage, and Lydia was the first to step out, followed by Alice, and then Cain.
"Madam, thank you for traveling such a long way today. I am Benon, the village head. It's a simple place, but I hope you can relax here."
"Good job on the welcome. It's only a short stay, but I appreciate your help."
When Lydia gently smiled, the tension among the villagers eased. After that, she and Alice were led to their room for the night. Lydia and Alice share the biggest 2-person room; Cain was shown to a single room. It was a bit narrow, but very clean and well-maintained.
When Cain opened the window, he saw villagers shopping in the square or chatting after their day's work, probably because the room faces the village square. For Cain, who can't go outside much, it was a very fresh sight.
"Should I just stay in the room until dinner?"
As Cain was thinking that, he heard a knock on the door.
