Volume 2 Chapter 37 Work at Frontier Count Shield II

"A hubbub of voices, a lively chatter" About 200 meters inside the castle gate, in the middle of the main road. Around 20 people, including Maintenance Bureau members, Knights' Guard, and Cain, were in a meeting. The townspeople stopped their passage, watching from the side of the road, wondering what was about to begin. After a morning of detailed planning, they arrived at the site, and a problem surfaced.

"Compared to Sanroze territory town, there are definitely more people here. And the road is about 8 meters wide, isn't it, Doughton?"

Cain commented after arriving at the site, observing the actual road.

"Yes. This main road was decided to be almost 8 meters wide in the initial stages of the city plan. However, there are some places where the width differs, so adjustments will be needed."

Doughton, the project leader for the "stone pavement" project, replied.

"Also, aren't there other places like in front of that shop, where individual maintenance has been done?"

In front of the shop Cain pointed to, boards had been laid to make unloading easier. There were also places along this road where food stalls were lined up, and they were discussing how to handle them at the site.

"If possible, I'd like to make it uniform. It's easier to imagine that way, so it will take less time."

Cain expressed his requirements for using [magic]. After thinking for a moment, Doughton called over several subordinates at the site, spread out maps, measured, and began a meeting, comparing them with the maps.

Since the meeting seemed to be going on for a while, Cain began to casually observe the town. He thought the same thing when he came here, there were more people than in Sanroze territory town, and he saw many non-humans. Earlier, he saw a rabbit-beast woman for the first time since coming to this world and his mood lifted. Another thing he noticed was that the smell drifting through the town was less noticeable, perhaps because of the sewers.

 "Sir Cain, Sir Cain?"

"Oh, yes. I was lost in thought."

"Sorry for the delay. After our discussion, I would like to proceed with the 'cobblestone' work extending 3 meters to the left and right of the center of the road. Also, regarding the 'cant' suggested yesterday, could we go ahead with that as well?"

"So, we're talking about 3 meters from the center of the road, right? And if we add the 'cant,' it'll create a border between the cobblestones and the dirt road. Over time, the dirt will wash away. Hmm, how about creating a boundary line for the road?"

 "A boundary line?"

Unable to picture it, Doughton was struggling, so he drew a sketch on the ground to explain in detail. Simply put, they would create a boundary with stone walls like ropes marking swimming pool lanes, separating the cobblestone section from the non-cobblestone part (which we'll call the sidewalk). After that, they can add the 'cant' to the center of the road and pave the cobblestones, which will naturally create a step between the sidewalk and the cobblestones."

"Oh, that sounds great! Please go ahead with it!"

"There's just one issue. If you could draw the center and boundary lines, it would make things easier, but I'm unable to do that myself..."

"Don't worry, we'll handle it. Please give us a moment."

Doughton called his subordinates again and gave some orders. They ran to the wagon carrying supplies and began moving things. After watching for a while, Cain saw several Maintenance Bureau staff using tools to draw the center and boundary lines on the road. Cain couldn't quite make out what tools they were using, so he decided to check with Doughton again.

"Doughton, how are they able to draw the center line so accurately?"

"Yes, they're using a magic tool that calculates the exact center of the measured length. When we were working on the Frontier Count Shield region, many dwarven engineers were involved, and they gave us these magic tools they had used."

"Wow, that's a convenient magic tool."

Cain commented while watching the workers. After a while, the preparations were complete, and the lines were drawn.

"Now, I'll use [magic], so please step back."

Cain gave instructions to the people around him. Upon hearing this, the staff managing the site blew a whistle, signaling the onlookers to step back.

"Now, we'll begin with about 20 meters. [Stone Wall] & [Stone]"

Using plenty of Mana in circulation, they performed the magic. As usual, the path faintly glowed from where Cain touched, and like dominoes falling, the road turned into cobblestones.

"Whoa!"" What is that? Amazing!"" cheers rose from the spectators.

"Alright, did it go well? Mr. Doughton, please check."

 "Understood, you guys check it!"

After Doughton's command, the staff in charge began measuring. Soon, they all reported "No problems." Doughton summarized, then told Cain everything was fine.

 "Alright, let's get to it."

Cain rolled up his sleeves and fired himself up again.

The team working on the cobblestone project improved their efficiency with time, finishing about 3-4ths of the work by end of day. Progress was 1.5 times the planned rate. Over the next week, they paved the main roads and plazas of Frontier Count Shield territory with cobblestones. As expected, Cain's nickname 'Sir Cobblestone' spread through the city.
