Volume 2 Chapter 47 Let's Buy Souvenirs II
The adventurers' guild in Margrave Shield was a pretty big 3-story building. It seemed to have a bar inside too, with 2 entrances: one to the reception and one directly into the bar. This time, since playing around with the standard setup took too long, Barvish went in first. Inside, straight ahead, was the reception counter with 3 women working there. To the left back was where they bought materials, where a rough-looking guy with a beard sat. He seemed free now, reading a small book, which felt oddly out of place.
Barvish told the woman at the right-side reception, "I want to buy some materials," and she guided him to the corner where potions and supplies were lined up. When they reached it, there were small adventuring essentials, potions, and beginner gear like knives and short swords. The receptionist was a cute rabbit girl. She had brown hair and long brown ears on her head that twitched adorably as she moved.
"Sorry, I'd like to buy some gold. Can you tell me the price?"
Barvish casually talked to her as usual. Cain watched her twitching ears and wondered: Does he not get excited seeing those ears? Is it because she's a different race? Is cuteness not universal? Or does he just like her? He kept glancing at the adorable rabbit receptionist.
"Sir Cain, how much would you like to buy?"
"Uh, well... just a little. Maybe around one gold coin's worth since it's a trial."
He thought he was avoiding staring, but he kept getting distracted by her twitching ears. It took him a moment to understand Barvish's question.
"Understood. One gold coin worth of gold, then. About 20 grams, is that okay?"
Cain nodded and confirmed, then paid.
"Do you have any magic stones from goblins or orcs? And what other metals besides gold do you have?"
Cain, suddenly thinking of an idea for a gift for Randolph, asked these extra questions about magic stones and metals.
"Yes, sir. How many do you need? I have ten of each in stock. The metals include iron, magic iron, silver, gold, and a little mithril."
"Alright, then 3 magic stones each. I want something strong and that doesn't rust. Which Barvish should I choose?"
"If you want it to not rust, then magic iron, gold, or mithril, depending on what you're using it for. The application matters, you see?"
"I'm planning to make a loop, shaping it into a ring. I want it to be so strong that it won't deform even if I drop it from the table."
"I'm not sure what a loop is, but if it needs to withstand a fall, magic iron should do, right?"
After taking Barvish's advice, he bought about 100g of magic iron. Cain resisted the urge to touch the ears of a female rabbitfolk, then left the adventurers' guild behind.
(If I pet those ears, she'll get mad, won't she? Maybe I'll ask Lala about it later.)
"──Sir Cain, Sir Cain, Sir Cain!"
Barvish shouted loudly, tugging at his arm. It seems I was walking dazedly, lost in a fantasy of stroking those ears.
"Sorry, I was lost in thought. What is it?"
"Thinking is fine, but please watch where you're going. You were about to bump into the wall. Where are we heading next?"
Looking forward as told, the wall was only about 30 cm away. He need to be careful. He suggested we go buy Barvish a new dagger next. Barvish said he didn't need one since he was supplied with one, but since he'll be protecting him again, he think we should get a proper one. He set off towards the weapon shop.
The weapon shops were lined up about a 5-minute walk from the adventurers' guild. It was one of the stores he wanted to visit having come to this other world. Excited, he went into the first one. Among the shops on this street, it seemed like a big store with various weapons like daggers, greatswords, spears, and bows either displayed or packed in boxes. Cain was intrigued, peering closely at some, but Barvish said, "Let's go," and they left the store.
"The quality is good, but there wasn't anything special. Is it okay if I look around a bit more?" Cain asked, following Barvish. They entered a few more shops, but nothing caught Cain's interest, so they quickly left. Wondering if the weapon shop on this street might be any good, Cain spotted a small weapon shop at the end of the road. Barvish seemed to have found something and entered the shop.
The small weapon shop was a bit dim, with only a few swords on the shelves. As Cain looked around, he couldn't help but glance here and there.
"What do you want? This isn't a place for kids!"
A low, slightly annoyed voice came from the back of the shop. Then, a dwarf appeared. The dwarf's hair was messy, with white strands mixed in, and his beard was stained with something that looked like dirt. He held a hammer in his hand, as if ready to throw it at them.
"My apologies, shopkeeper. This is my master, Cain Sanroze Shamrock, the nobleman. We came to purchase a dagger today. Could you please show us the dagger in the back?"
After introducing Cain, Barvish explained the purpose of their visit and pointed at a dagger.
"Oh, a noble, huh? I apologize. But, you're a slave, and you can carry weapons? Quite the unusual master, huh?"
"Shopkeeper, I must ask you to refrain from further comments. Even among kin, we cannot allow such words."
"Sorry, please forgive my rudeness. My name is Jacob. Apologies for the delay in introducing myself."
Jacob's slow bow and apology were received by Cain, who thought to himself that this was exactly the type of dwarf he had imagined.
"Now, about this dagger. What do you think?"
Barvish took the dagger, moved a little away from Cain, and tested it by swinging, thrusting, and checking the grip. Afterward, he handed it back to Cain with the hilt facing him. The dagger had a wider blade than usual, and the grip was a bit thicker, making it heavier for a dagger.
"Barvish, are you sure about this dagger? If you're okay with it, I'll buy it." When Barvish said "yes," I asked the shopkeeper to make the purchase. The dagger was 25 gold coins, and it came with a sheath.
"It's rare to see a master go this far for a slave. I'd be grateful if you treat it well. If you need anything else, just contact us."
Their response was so polite, it was hard to believe from how they behaved when entering. Well, maybe if a child with a fellow slave came in, they might get a little annoyed.
