Volume 2 Chapter 51 Going Home, Reporting, and Future Plans
I returned from Margrave Shield territory and reported to Luke about work in the city, how Cain became a knight, Barvish's introduction, and the cobblestone streets. The work was within expectations, but becoming a knight was not predicted. Lydia handed Luke a letter from Margrave Shield, and he finally seemed convinced.
"Honestly, does Cain have some destiny attracting various things? Getting knighted at age 7 will likely cause a fuss in the capital. Should I report this to His Majesty as well, not just Margrave Shield?"
Luke begins to worry, murmuring to himself at the end.
"Let's consider if Alice should go to Knight Academy together. Lydia, I'll discuss with Randolph later. And what about those monster tamers? I received a letter, but what will we do with them?"
"As I mentioned in my letter, we will hire those people. I am confident we can produce many dishes from Cowcowbull milk. If we have monster tamers like them, getting milk will be easy. We need to build stables soon and increase their numbers."
"You're really into this. Is it that important? Even though they are monster tamers, one is still not an adult. Isn't that risky?"
Lydia signals Cain silently and gives him instructions.
"Father, please give us 2 days to prove Cowcowbull's potential. Then, can you make a decision?"
"Two days should be fine. Gardy has both of them, so check tomorrow."
Cain responds, "Yes." He finishes the report and handed over the souvenir he made.
"What is this? Looks like a pen. I got a feather pen as a gift from Alice earlier."
"Here's a replacement for the quill. Dip the tip in ink like before. Since the tip is made of gold, you won't need to sharpen it."
Luke dipped the tip in ink, skeptically, and wrote on parchment. His hand paused for a moment, then he smoothly scribbled signatures and shapes, his eyes widening. He looked at Lydia and Randolph.
"This is excellent. The writing feels a bit firm, but it ensures clear strokes. Cain—no, Lord Shamrock—how is this tip made?"
"Uh, what do you mean? Oh, right. The tip is shaped using Barvish's [Skill] with gold. The penholder—the part you hold—is made with my [Earth Magic]. But, Your Excellency, this is a souvenir from my son, so even Margrave Shield doesn't know about it. If you plan to sell it, I'll leave it to you. Since quills are common, it might be best to target merchants and nobles with a luxurious design."
Luke handed the pen to Lydia and Randolph to test. Both wrote with surprise.
"Also, Randolph, thank you as always. When your writing's hard to read, try this? Say [Magnifying Glass] and look through the ring—it'll magnify the text. It's charged with quite a bit of [Mana], so it should last a year with daily use."
"Thank you, even for me. My eyesight's been worsening, so this is a blessing. Just say [Magnifying Glass], right? [Magnifying Glass]. Wow, the text is bigger through the ring. Thank you, Sir Cain. This is a [Daily Magic] tool, isn't it?"
"You made something like this too? Cain, I told you to consult me before creating things. Now that you're a noble, be more cautious. Consult me about everything for a while."
"Yes," Cain replied, looking down.
"Don't be too hard on Cain. It's a gift for Randolph, and he's been working hard in Margrave Shield's territory."
"My apologies. So much happened at once. Thank you, Cain."
Luke said this and patted Cain's head.
Reflecting on overdoing it, Cain returned to his room close to midnight.
The next morning, Luke, Lydia, Randolph, Doughton, and Sanroze's Maintenance Bureau staff discussed town road maintenance in detail. Previously, road maintenance was delayed due to manpower, time, and cost. But since Cain used [Magic], only periodic repairs were needed. However, relying solely on Cain's [Magic] was unsustainable, so repair commercialization and training [Earth Magic] users were included in the proposal for Margrave Shield.
Doughton returned to Margrave Shield's territory with the proposal but planned to meet again next month. Sanroze's town wall construction would begin then, and he'd come to inspect it. Cain felt their relationship with Doughton would be long-lasting.
Cain's busyness showed no signs of easing. Alice was leaving for Knight Academy in two weeks. Initially, Cain thought he wouldn't be of much help, but he was dragged along daily for purchases and preparations.
Recently, they went to a trusted store to buy a new coat for her trip to the capital. "Cain, what about this?" "Or this one?" "How's the length?" Cain, uninterested in fashion, gave half-hearted replies, leading to frustration: "Pay attention! Why did I bring you?" It felt unfair, but since they'd only meet a few times a year after her enrollment, he cherished the limited time together.
