Volume 3 Chapter 10 Strategy Meeting

Volume 3 Chapter 10 Strategy Meeting

Cain was so happy that all three proposals were not rejected but became "matters for consideration" that he returned to his room skipping.

"I'm home──Barvish──, I'm so nervous and thirsty, so please make some tea──. And Gardy, I want to go to the river soon for a [magic] experiment, would you come with me?"

Barvish left the room to ask a maid for tea, and Gardy replied, "The day after tomorrow." Cain brought *The Book of the Great Sage* and spread it on the table until the tea was ready. (Since the Sage's Book was given to Cain by Margrave Shield, it is part of Cain's collection.)

"Now then, I need to check the [One Way] magic again and turn it into a [magic circle]."

 Classification: [Stamp Magic]

 Name: [One Way]

Effect: Draws a barrier that allows or blocks specific substances to pass in one direction within the stamped area.

Required Mana: Length of the stamp (m) × 100

"The reason this magic didn't spread was probably because the required Mana was a bottleneck. Also, since it needs to be used for each barrier condition, it wasn't very convenient. Even this time, if I want to use it in the sewer, I need to set up three barriers: one that prevents creatures from passing from outside to the sewer, another from the sewer to the outside, and a third that blocks air and creatures from passing in both directions."

(After all, in Japan as well, there were problems with creatures flowing into the sewage system, and if only air passes outside the sewage, slimes and intruders could come out.)

While confirming the Sage's Book and muttering to himself, it seemed that the tea and snacks were ready.

"Sir Cain, I have kept you waiting. Today's dessert is plain cake with honey added."

"Thank you, Barvish. I wanted something sweet because I've been using my head a lot. Barvish and Gardy, let's eat together. I'll explain how the proposal to Father went today."

After seating the two puzzled individuals at the table and taking a bite of the cake, Cain began to speak.

* * *

"I see, it will be about a week after Sir Randolph returns before things really get moving, right? Still, a fountain? I've never seen the real thing myself. From what I've heard, it sounds like a spring where water gushes up..."

Barvish tried to recall his knowledge about fountains, leaving out what he knew.

"Sir Cain, do you know what a fountain is?"

After taking a bite of the cake, Gardy asked Cain a question.

"Yeah, it's more or less what Barvish said. There are various ways water can be sprayed, but the simplest might be the kind where water is sprayed upwards, right?"

Cain explained based on his memories of fountains in Japan, as he had never seen one in the capital.

"The issue is how to draw the water up to a high place, and besides, we need to draw water from the river even if there's no fountain."

Cain explained while imagining a water tower from his time in Japan, considering how it could be done.

"Sir Cain, why do we need to draw water from the river even if there's no fountain?"

Gardy asked with a puzzled expression.

"Huh? Did I not explain to Gardy? The sewers are for rainwater, toilet water, and waste to flow, but we can't always ensure the amount of water that flows all the way to the end of the sewers every single time, so I'm thinking we should periodically flush water through. Imagine it like pouring water from a bucket into a narrow channel to flush leaves and such away, can you picture it?"

Cain explained the necessity of periodically flushing water through the sewers. It seemed to get through to the two of them somehow, but Cain thought to himself that seeing once is worth more than hearing a hundred times.

"The explanation is a bit difficult, so I'll explain it again when we go to the river the day after tomorrow."

"Sir Cain, may I suggest something? Imagining using a lot of river water like this, is it correct? If it is, we need to build a reservoir to store water little by little so that it doesn't affect the downstream territories."

 Barvish made an unexpected suggestion.

"Huh, a reservoir? Oh, if we use the water upstream, the people downstream won't have any water left. That's dangerous, dangerous. We need permission from Father to build a reservoir. And if a new area is created, we'll need more farmland, so we'll need water for agriculture. Hey, will there be enough water?"

Cain began to feel a little uneasy.

"Sir Cain, it's alright. The river that runs through the Sanroze territory has a large volume of water, and during the thawing season and rainy season, a considerable amount flows. Should we make a reservoir now? It might even help prevent river flooding."

Gardy casually provided a good idea.

"Sir Cain, why not consult with Sir Randolph, who has been watching over the Sanroze territory for many years? I think it would be better to refer to the water control measures that have been implemented in the past."

 Barvish also made a suggestion.

"Yeah, I hope Randolph comes back soon. But you know, I've started to worry about what will happen to the Sanroze territory if Randolph isn't around."

Cain, Barvish, and Gardy looked at each other and laughed.
