Volume 3 Chapter 12 Tried It Out
The day after the [Stove] magic experiment, Cain was on a horse-drawn carriage heading toward the Daida River near the town of Sanroze, accompanied by Gardy and Barvish.
The Daida River flows alongside the Great Forest, where monsters occasionally appear, though not frequently.
The three of us advanced cautiously, keeping an eye on our surroundings. About 30 minutes by carriage from the town, we heard the sound of flowing water. After moving a bit further, the river came into view.
To Cain, the Daida River seemed quite large, with a width of 6 meters and a depth of about 2 meters. The water was clear and appeared drinkable, but it's best to avoid drinking it directly due to potential parasites.
"It's a pretty big river, Gardy."
"Yes, it collects meltwater from the mountains, making it wide, but the flow is fast, and boats can't be used near the Sanroze domain."
Gardy replied, gazing at the river.
"Gardy, what kind of fish can you catch in this river?"
"Because of the fast flow, only small fish about 10 to 15 cm can be caught. They're hard to hook, so they're not very edible, but they're delicious when grilled."
Barvish and Gardy grew excited discussing river fish. At some point, the two had become quite friendly.
"Sir Cain, where will you conduct the experiment? If you're digging a hole, it might be better to move a bit off the road."
Barvish asked, looking downstream.
"Yeah, I want to try various things, so could you find a spot with a good view? I need to concentrate on the work, and it would be dangerous if I don't notice approaching monsters."
Cain answered, glancing at the wooden board with today's schedule written on it.
After Barvish spoke with Gardy, they began heading downstream. About 15 minutes from the previous spot, we arrived at a place where the river made a large curve.
"The view is good here on the riverbank, and even if we sprinkle a little water, it should return to the river, so I think it will be fine."
"Thank you, Gardy. Yeah, this spot seems fine. Barvish, are there any signs of monsters around?"
"Please wait a moment. ... There's no sign of monsters nearby. Unless we make a loud noise, there's no need to worry about them approaching."
"Understood. Let's start the experiment while staying cautious. Today, I want to try three things: 1. Experiment with [One-Way] magic. 2. Verify the principle of the siphon. 3. Test [Earth magic] underwater. I'll need your cooperation for these three experiments and verifications."
"Understood. However, since I'm not sure what you're planning, please explain each step. I need to assess the danger level."
Barvish asked with a serious expression.
"Right, first, the [One-Way] magic experiment is to test if we can limit what flows through as expected. We're checking if the pipe we make will only allow water to pass through."
"I understand. From your previous explanation, there's no risk of explosion from the magic effect. What should I help with?"
Barvish seemed to judge that the [One-Way] magic posed little danger.
"Then, once we make the pipe, could you take it to the river? Gardy, I'm counting on you too."
"Understood."
Cain used [Create Clay] and [Earth Press] magic to craft a pipe 30 cm in diameter and about 4 meters long, bent in an L-shape. He then took out a wooden board with the [One-Way] magic circle written on it from his bag and cast the spell. The magic characters appeared inside the pipe.
A rainbow-colored membrane, like a soap bubble, formed within the magic characters. It felt hard like glass when touched, and when pressed with a finger, the membrane didn't move, and the finger didn't penetrate it.
"Alright, let's give it a try. Barvish, Gardy, could you attach the bent side of the pipe to the river?"
"Yes," they replied, placing the side with the magic characters into the river until it was fully submerged. After a while, water began flowing out from the other end of the pipe.
Cain used the Glasses of Analysis to examine the water. It displayed: 'Water (H2O), Pure Water.'
(Hmm? The water is pure, which means no bacteria or parasites, but drinking too much pure water isn't good for the body... What should I do?)
"Sir Cain, was it a success? To me, it just looks like river water flowing out."
Barvish questioned, observing the water.
"Probably a success. Could you remove the pipe from the water once? Then, position the submerged end of the pipe upward. Gardy, use this bottle to scoop up muddy water and pour it into the pipe's opening."
Cain created a bucket-sized bottle using [Create Clay].
Gardy took the bottle, scooped up muddy water, and poured it into the pipe's opening. Soon, only clear water flowed out from the opposite end. Cain used the Glasses of Analysis again, confirming the display: 'Water (H2O), Pure Water.'
"Yes, success. Only water was extracted. The mud has accumulated on top of the rainbow membrane."
The first experiment of the day was a success.
