Volume 3 Chapter 13 Tried It Out II
The magic of [One Way] worked exactly as imagined. With this, only specified items can pass through, and intrusion of anything else can be prevented. Cain rejoices that another piece necessary for underground waterway construction has been assembled.
"Sir Cain, what's next to verify?"
Gardy, pulling the pipe he'd been using from the river, asks Cain.
"Next is the 'principle of the siphon.' I'll make a pipe for verification, so wait a moment. [Create Clay]"
Cain begins crafting the pipe to test the 'principle of the siphon.' As he chants the spell name, a thin pipe about 15 cm in diameter extends from his hand.
The pipe keeps growing, forming a large U-shaped structure.
"Oops, this won't draw water, so... [Create Clay]"
Cain chants the spell again, and one end bends at a right angle and extends. The other end also lengthens and bends similarly.
"Sir Cain, what is this?"
Barvish asks, examining the newly formed deformed U-shaped pipe.
"This is probably a pipe where you put the shorter side into the river and draw water from the longer side. It's faster to show than explain, so can you help? Oh, and first, we need to make a hole in the riverbank."
Cain moves slightly away from the riverbank and chants [Hole]. A hole about 1 meter deep appears in front of him.
"Alright, preparations are complete. Gardy, Barvish, can you help fill this pipe with water?"
The three work together, submerging the pipe in the river and filling it with water.
"Gardy, attach this plug to the end of the pipe."
Cain tosses the prepared plug to Gardy.
Gardy catches it and attaches it. Cain does the same on the opposite side.
"Now, this is the hard part, so let's do our best! Stand the pipe up, insert Gardy's end into the hole we just made, and can you support my side so it doesn't fall over?"
The three stand the deformed U-shaped pipe, placing Cain's side in the river and Gardy's side into the hole on the riverbank. The pipe rises about 2 meters above the river, roughly 2 meters away from it.
"Gardy, on 3, 2, 1, remove the plug. Ready? 3, 2, 1, go!"
On the cue, both remove the plugs. Water gushes out from Gardy's side and doesn't stop flowing.
"Success! Great, this brings us one step closer to a fountain, right?"
"Sir Cain, why does the water keep flowing?"
Barvish asks, watching the accumulating water.
"Hmm. Simply put, water flows from higher to lower, right? It's the same here—by creating a height difference between the inlet and outlet, water flows to the lower side. When the pipe is filled with water, the moving water inside pulls the rest, allowing it to flow upward. Does that make sense?"
"Hmm, sort of. So, if you create a height difference between the inlet and outlet, water can flow to any height?"
"Not exactly. Theoretically, the limit is around 10 meters. Plus, filling the pipe with water without air is quite challenging, so it's not easy."
Barvish ponders, deeply trying to grasp Cain's explanation.
