Volume 3 Chapter 14 Tried It Out III

Cain had finished verifying the principles of [One-Way] magic and the siphon, and was enjoying a sandwich for lunch while gazing at the pond created using the Sanphon principle.

"Sir Cain, please enjoy this fragrant tea."

Barvish handed over a cup of aromatic tea.

 "Thank you, Barvish."

Cain savored the scent of the tea before taking a sip.

"Speaking of which, [Hot Water]'s daily magic is so convenient. Being able to drink tea without starting a fire... If only we'd had [Hot Water] during that camping trip..."

 "Hmm? What's wrong, Barvish?"

"Oh, nothing. I was just reminiscing about the past."

Barvish looked down thoughtfully for a moment, then quickly smiled.

* * *

"Now, let's move on to the final test! As we continue improving the roads within the territory, we'll definitely need to build bridges over rivers. I thought we should practice now."

 "Practice? What kind?"

Gardy asked, glancing at the river beside Cain.

"To build a bridge over a river, we need a path from shore to shore. But for a wide river like this, it's better to have support pillars in the middle, right?"

Cain pointed at the 6-meter-wide river in front of him as he explained.

"Indeed, support pillars would make it more stable for wider rivers."

Barvish stood next to Cain, opposite Gardy.

"I figured you'd say that. But damming a flowing river is incredibly difficult. I was wondering if we could use Earth magic instead."

"I see your point, but that sounds challenging. The riverbed isn't visible, and the soil on the surface moves."

Barvish pointed out the difficulty with a serious expression.

"Normally, magic is activated within the visible range. But when I made Cobblestone earlier, the [Mana] I channeled through the road turned into Cobblestone. So, I thought maybe I could channel [Mana] along the riverbed."

"Another brilliant idea. If Sir Cain says it's possible, I believe it."

Barvish spoke with a slightly exasperated expression.

"Well, it's worth a try. If it doesn't work, I'll adjust it—it's just practice, after all. Alright."

Cain performed [Mana Circulation] for a bit longer, placed his hand on the ground, and chanted [Stone Wall].

The river surface rippled about 2 meters from the bank, and a stone wall emerged, rising 50 centimeters out of the water. Barvish and Gardy exclaimed, "Whoa!" but Cain looked dissatisfied.

"Sir Cain, you did it! Amazing!"

"Just as expected—I knew you could do it!"

Barvish and Gardy watched as the stone wall rose from the river surface.

"That's not enough... I need to generate the stone wall from inside the water, just like on land. I guess I'll have to train more in [Earth Magic] and raise my level."

Cain muttered to himself, gazing at the stone wall protruding from the water.

"Sir Cain, you're still young but so hard on yourself."

Barvish murmured, almost like a soliloquy.

"Magic is so difficult. Can't we create another stone wall above the visible one? Like farming—if we do it in parts, 2 or 3 times, we might get the same result..."

 Gardy, arms crossed, spoke softly.

 ""Huh?!""

Cain and Barvish's voices overlapped as they turned to Gardy.

"That's it, Gardy! It doesn't have to be done all at once! Amazing, Gardy!"

"I never thought of it that way... My thinking is still too rigid."

Cain excitedly praised Gardy's idea, while Barvish looked slightly downcast.

"Alright! Let's try it right away! Imagine creating a slightly larger base for the [Stone Wall]."

Cain cast the spell, and a stone wall with a larger area than before emerged from the river surface, rising about 20 centimeters out of the water.

"Now, imagine building a stone wall on top of the one you can see. [Stone Wall]."

A stone wall grew from the one emerging from the river, forming a roughly 3-meter-high structure.

 "Yay! It worked──!"

Cain jumped up, expressing his joy with his whole body.
