Volume 3 Chapter 7 Which One Should I Choose First?II

"Father, this is Cain. Excuse me."

Cain had come to Luke's office with three proposal woodblocks he made yesterday.

"What's wrong today? Did you think of some new food or something?"

Seeing Cain enter and open the office door, Luke asked with a joyful expression.

"Sorry, I can't meet your wishes. Today, I came with proposals for work. I brought three improvement plans to make the Sanroze territory better. I am confident that all of them will benefit the residents. If these can be implemented, I think a good foundation for future development will be built."

Cain took out the three woodblocks he had and lined them up on Luke's desk. Luke watched the arranged illustrated woodblocks and Cain alternately, but it seemed he didn't understand Cain's intention.

"Cain, what is this? Is it some candidate items you want me to buy?"

"No! These are for the expansion of the town walls, sewer construction, and the installation of public baths!"

Leaning on his desk and raising his body, Cain loudly denied the content of the lined-up woodblocks.

"Oh, oh, joking, kidding, Cain. About the town wall expansion, it's something I originally thought of. And Randolph is going to check whether we have permission for it. If His Majesty grants approval, I want to start right away. I've thought it through properly."

Luke puffed out his cheeks and insisted he had considered it thoroughly.

"What's wrong with you? Cain's voice was echoing in the hallway too?"

"Ah, Lydia, just in time. Cain brought some improvement ideas for this town. Why don't we check them together?"

Lydia entered the office with a half-exhausted expression, stood beside Cain, patted his head, and looked at the arranged woodblocks on the desk.

"Oh, it's well done. Town walls, bathhouse, and sewers? The last one, I can't quite tell. This is probably a measure Cain has been thinking about for the Sanroze territory for a while now."

Lydia, who read Cain's proposal from the woodblocks, was not her usual self. Instead, she had an expression like a career woman with sharp eyes.

"Yes, as expected of Mother Lydia. The last one is the sewer system. If we implement these in the Sanroze territory, I'm sure the villagers will be pleased, and merchants will visit even more from outside the territory!"

Cain puffed out his small chest and asserted to Lydia.

"I think it's a good idea, so I'd like to hear the details... Could you wait until Randolph comes back? Whether or not to carry out these projects will be decided by Luke, but since Randolph is always in charge of coordinating with the villagers, could you give us some time until he returns?"

 "Yes, no problem."

"It might be a bit double work, but could you tell us the details of Cain's suggested improvements? That's fine, right?"

"Of course. Cain, please go ahead. Start."

Luke and Lydia moved to a sofa in the office and sat down. Cain stood in front of them and began explaining the proposed improvements.

"Now, I will explain my current plan. Which proposal do you think is best?"

Cain held the woodblocks fan-shaped in his hand, showing the side with the drawings to the two of them.

 "Which one do you think?"

The two simultaneously pointed at the sewer system woodblock.

"The sewer system is the most difficult proposal to understand among these,"

"That's true, though it's in the Shield territory too, but I can't quite feel what will actually get better, can I?"

Luke and Lydia chose for similar reasons.

(Well, normally, people wouldn't understand. Even in Michio's era, most wouldn't go to the sewer, or even enter it. And since there's no TV, they wouldn't get any info on what's inside anyway. Alright.)

"Alright then, let me explain the sewers. To put it simply, we dig a long hole under the town to channel rainwater, domestic wastewater, and toilet drainage. This hole is called a sewer pipe or sewer. Incidentally, 'sewage' refers to water that cannot be used for drinking, cooking, or bathing."

Cain peeked at Luke and Lydia's expressions to see if they understood.

 "Mhm, continue,"

"Yes, currently in the Sanroze domain, we are creating drainage ditches to channel rainwater due to the cobblestoning of roads, and we are extending them outside the town. We create these under the ground, actually under the road, to collect all the rainwater and domestic wastewater, and then we discharge it outside the domain's town. By constructing sewers, we aim to prevent rainwater from accumulating on the roads, and by channeling domestic and toilet wastewater, we hope to keep the town clean and odorless."

Luke and Lydia continued listening with murmurs of "Hmhm."

"Also, by building sewers, the accumulation of rainwater and wastewater in the town will decrease, which we believe will reduce the occurrence of diseases."

"Sewers seem like a very good thing. But there must be some disadvantages, right?"

Luke gave a sly smile, looking like a big company president testing his subordinates, while Lydia also seemed to be looking forward to Cain's reply with an expression of anticipation.

(Ohh, we've entered the Q&A portion of the presentation! I need to explain this properly or it won't come to fruition, so I must gather my resolve!)

Cain tightened his fist in his mind and gathered his resolve.
