Volume 3 Chapter 8 Which One Should I Choose First?III

"Yes, the disadvantages of the sewer system? More than disadvantages, there are some things that require countermeasures. First, the smell; then the method of wastewater treatment and the discharge destination; and measures against intruders, right?"

Luke and Lydia listened quietly to Cain's explanation.

"Regarding the smell, there are countermeasures. There was a [seal magic] in The Book of the Great Sage that prevents the smell from escaping, so we can handle that. Next, about the wastewater, we'll store it underground outside the town wall and use slimes to treat it, then discharge it downstream of the town. Of course, we'll install this magic at the outlet to ensure only water is released."

Here, Cain paused his explanation to wait for questions from Luke and Lydia. He closed his eyes briefly as if thinking, then opened them slowly, and Luke spoke.

"That magic was in The Book of the Great Sage, but does it really only discharge water? If even a small amount of dirty water flows out, we can't adopt it. I don't want to cause trouble for the people downstream just to keep our town clean. If it causes trouble, then staying as it is now is fine."

"Yes, we'll verify it properly and make it flow. Father is the lord, and the townspeople are happy,"

"That's right, Luke cares deeply about the townspeople."

Lydia and Cain praised Luke more extravagantly than usual.

"Seriously, don't tease the lord. Also, you haven't finished explaining the measures against intruders."

Luke, feeling a bit embarrassed, prompted Cain to continue his explanation.

"Yes, regarding intruders, we'll use the same [seal magic] from The Book of the Great Sage for smell and wastewater countermeasures."

"Here too, does the sage's magic—or such an all-purpose magic—really exist? And can Cain use it? Isn't it a dangerous magic?"

It seemed Luke doubted the safety of the magic Cain could use.

"I think it's all right. The [magic name] we'll be using is called [One-Way], a magic the sage developed on a whim while trying to create very strong alcohol. However, it says in the book that he couldn't make it a strong magic."

"Developing magic on a whim—that's just like the sage. But did the sage like alcohol?"

Luke tilted his head and confirmed with Lydia.

"Such descriptions weren't in the sage's biography, were they? But I heard the sage had a friend who was a dwarf blacksmith, so maybe it was for that friend."

Lydia informed Cain of the sage's unknown social connections.

(Huh, a dwarf blacksmith friend of the sage. I'll ask Barvish about it later.)

"But the sage said this magic was a failure and didn't teach it to anyone. So, the usability might be a bit poor, but I don't think it can be easily broken."

"Would the sage give up on using something with such poor usability?"

Luke began to look a bit worried.

"The verification is yet to come, but this magic is designed to allow only one specific thing to pass through, or to prevent it from passing. It's difficult to use just once, but I think if you use it several times—in this case, how many layers?—you should be able to make it pass through only the specific thing."

"But if such a use is possible, wouldn't the sage be using it?"

Lydia said it's inconceivable that the sage wouldn't have noticed.

"Yes, there is one drawback to this magic: it uses a very large amount of mana when used. Since it can be used like a door, the wider the range, the more mana is needed. You can reduce mana usage if the range is small, but since a seal is needed to specify the range, it might not be able to make a seal if it's too small."

Luke and Lydia finally seemed convinced.

"I understand the outline. However, when using it, we'll include Randolph and proceed with the verification. After the verification, I'll ask for a report."

"Yes, I understand. Um, I have a consultation regarding drainage treatment. We're using slimes for drainage treatment, but although slimes are beneficial magic creatures, will the residents be accepting of them living in the underground of the place where we live?"

Cain asked questions about slimes. As Cain, he was worried that these fantasy creatures might eventually attack people under the influence of the game.

"About that, I think it's fine. Even now, some large merchants have their own slimes in the underground for garbage and toilet treatment. Cain, didn't you notice? There's a slime under the toilet of this mansion too."

Luke stated a shocking fact. A slime living under the house! Cain felt a little fear toward the toilet.

"Also, probably it's okay, but will the slimes be able to come and go between the sewers and the ground? If possible, I want the entrance and exit for the slimes to be made in the forest on the east side of the town. The body fluids that the slimes excrete will be good nutrients for the forest. It's also said that many herbs grow in forests where there are many slimes."

"Huh, slimes are really beneficial magic creatures, aren't they? Maybe I should study them a bit? If you have no other questions about the sewers, please let me explain the construction of the town walls."
