Volume 1 Chapter 1-2 Reincarnated As An Instant Death Mob, Is This Hell?

It was the start of the event—the moment when the demon race attacks. Only Blaze, who was away, and Ran, who managed to hide, would survive.

There was no more time. The event was about to begin.

 "Ran, come on!"

 "Ah, Mobu..."

I grabbed Ran's hand and ran toward the village square.

"Listen, everyone! The demons are coming!"

I shouted as loud as I could. People turned, confused and alarmed.

 "What are you saying, Mobu?"

Ran looked at me with wide eyes, but she didn't pull her hand away. She really is kind... whether it's just a game or this strange new reality.

"The demons are coming! Everyone needs to run into the forest—now!"

But instead of panic, laughter erupted.

"Did you take a nap and dream all this up again?"

 "Yeah, yeah. Just run already."

 "You're hopeless."

Even the village elder, who was basically another NPC, let out a long sigh.

"Stop joking around and look at Blaze. Born into the noble Rosinore family, yet he's humble and well-mannered. Compared to him, you have... nothing."

Well, I was just a mob character. Other than being an orphan, the developers didn't even bother to give me a background.

"Let's go, Ran. We'll survive—just the two of us."

I didn't want to die right after reincarnating. Clutching Ran's hand, I made for the river.

 "Mobu, where are we going?"

 "To our old hideout."

Back when we were kids, Blaze, Ran, and I had built a secret base beneath the watermill cottage. It was just a place to play, really. But in the game, Ran had survived by hiding there during the demon attack.

We slipped into the cottage, and I lifted the trapdoor. A staircase led down to the basement. I gently pushed Ran inside.

 "Mobu, you're acting strange today."

"Just hide. I'll camouflage the entrance."

 "But..."

 "Trust me."

Maybe it was the look on my face, but Ran gave a small nod.

"...Alright. I'll do as you say."

"Don't turn on the lamp. Stay quiet and keep still."

 "Okay."

Once Ran disappeared down the stairs, I looked out the window. Dark figures were approaching from the sky—gargoyles. They were coming fast.

 "No time..."

I kicked over barrels of wheat and emptied one. Tying a string to the bottom, I lowered the trapdoor and pulled the string through the doorknob hole. Then, I set the barrel on top to hide the entrance.

I could hear the flapping of wings now. Screams. People running for their lives.

 "Mobu..."

Ran pressed against my back, trembling.

"It's okay. The entrance is hidden."

 "The monsters... they're really coming."

 "Yeah."

"But why this village? There's nothing here."

"They're after Blaze. He's the protagonist. He has the blood of a hero."

 "The... hero?"

The cellar was dark and damp, filled with the scent of flour and dust.

 "Let's move to the corner."

 "Okay."

I guided her over and crouched down beside her.

"Stay low. Don't make a sound."

 "I'm scared, Mobu."

 "It's alright. I'm here."

 "...Hold me."

Ran trembled in my arms. A scream pierced through the floor above, followed by the sharp scent of smoke. The village was burning.

Just like in the game. Of course it was.

 The door upstairs creaked open.

"No one's here. Burn it down anyway. Kill everyone."

 "Got it."

 Flames began to crackle.

 "Mobu..."

 "Shh."

 Ran clung to me tightly.

"It's okay. This place will burn, but the basement won't collapse."

 I whispered in her ear.

 "How do you know?"

"Because... it happened this way in the game. Trust me."

 "I do... I believe you."

She buried her face against my chest. Sweet and innocent, just like in the game.

Time passed. Slowly, the sounds of chaos faded.

"We cleared it... the instant-death intro event. That's already a win for a mob character, right?"

 Outside, someone shouted.

 "What the hell happened here!?"

 A familiar voice. Ran stirred.

 "Mobu... that's Blaze."

 "Yeah."

 Same tone. Same voice actor.

 "Can you stand?"

 "I'll try... No, wait—help me."

 "Here."

I helped her up, supporting her waist as we emerged from the cellar.

The mill was completely burned down. Smoke drifted through the ruins.

 "Ran! Mobu!"

Blaze ran toward us, tossing aside a basket of mushrooms.

 "Are you okay, Ran?"

He scooped Ran up in his arms. Ran flinched and pulled away.

 "Mobu..."

 She hid behind me.

"Sorry. I was worried..." Blaze murmured, still holding out his arms awkwardly.

He was flawless. Handsome, kind, born into a prestigious house. Skilled with both sword and magic. The perfect hero. No wonder the devs only gave him and the heroines proper models.

"The village was wiped out. No one made it... not even my parents."

 Blaze looked shocked.

 "Mobu... you're okay, right?"

 "A gargoyle attacked."

 "A gargoyle...?"

 His expression darkened.

Why would a monster that strong show up here...?

The answer, Blaze, is that I'm not just a mob. You were supposed to say these lines to Ran, but I'm still here, screwing up your script.

* * *

 "Damn monsters!"

 Blaze clenched his fists tightly.

"They destroyed my home... I'll become stronger and defeat the Demon King!"

He didn't know it yet, but he wouldn't learn about his true lineage until later in the game.

"I'll enroll in the Royal Adventurers' Academy, as planned. Ran, you're coming too, right? Mobu... probably you as well."

Of course Ran would go. But me? I was just a bonus character.

Blaze had already paid the entrance and tuition fees. Ran and I, as orphans, couldn't even afford to dream of attending a school for nobles.

In the game, this was where the heroine awakened her magical talent and entered on a scholarship.

"I'm fine. Blaze, you go on ahead."

 Ran clung to my arm.

"I want to stay here... to mourn the villagers with Mobu."

 "Eh..."

 Blaze was speechless.

He probably sensed it—something about this was wrong. Off-script.

"Yeah. I'll stay too. They raised us, after all. We should say goodbye properly."

 "N-no way."

Blaze looked like he might cry.

Notes:

• Blaze - Male. The protagonist of the game, born into the wealthy Rosinore family. He has blond hair and a heroic appearance. Blaze is kind and lacks arrogance despite his status. He is destined to become a hero and defeat the Demon King. His relationship with Mobu and Ran is complex, as they are not part of the main story.

• Ran - Female. An orphan and a close friend of Mobu. She has long, dark hair and a gentle appearance. Ran is kind and trusting, often relying on Mobu for guidance. She survives the demon attack by hiding in the secret base with Mobu.
