Volume 6 Chapter 27 The Name Of Paradise, 'Indestructible'

 Six weapons clashed.

 No holding back. No stopping.

Horace held the magic sword Duran.

Ivan swung the Sacred Sword Yggdrasil and Magic Sword Dark Matter.

Rivela controlled the Great Flame Sword Surtr.

Sid stood firm with Journey Slime.

 Vande raised his Worldtree Axe.

And Garboros roared, swinging the Great Cleaver — Salvation Whale.

The six of them faced each other.

Their weapons met in loud, hard strikes.

Not one sword chipped. Not a single crack.

These weapons had two things in common.

Anyone who studied old stories would notice one of them.

Only the ones who studied deeply would know the second.

 The first thing was clear.

"These weapons don't even get scratched," someone said.

"It's fun, isn't it? Really fun. Weapons that can't break — crashing again and again!"

Horace's voice was calm but firm.

Garboros laughed. "Hey, Horace. That big knife of mine? It was made for fish. You think it's okay to use it on people?"

"It is true. It works best on things that act like fish. I tried other weapons after I got invited here. None of them fit. I stick with what I know."

Horace didn't argue. "Adventurers swing swords for gold, not for fun. Still, we don't always fight monsters. Swords do point at people sometimes. What we aim for, what we believe — it matters. But it's not always the rule."

Horace, the Golem Master, stood across from Garboros, the pirate of the deep seas.

Horace was tall — 183 centimeters. Thin. Calm.

Garboros was huge — 250 centimeters. Strong. Loud.

 One had a sword.

 The other, a giant knife.

By size alone, Garboros should have won.

By weight, Horace should have been crushed.

But size alone did not matter.

Not when people went beyond human limits.

"To swing your sword how you want," Horace said, pushing against Garboros's blade, "you need more than rights or rules. You need a power no one can question."

"You think I got this big by sitting still? I fought. I ate. I trained. Over and over."

Their weapons locked. Then they stepped apart.

 A blast came right after.

 "Whoa—"

 "Hm..."

Flames rushed in. Both stepped away and swung their swords to push the fire back.

"What was that?!" Horace looked ahead.

"That flat-chested girl again..." Garboros grumbled.

Ahead, Rivela swung the Great Flame Sword Surtr. Fire poured from the blade, flying toward Sid.

Sid looked calm. His face didn't change.

His slime moved like it had a mind of its own.

It grew tall and round — like a shield.

It took the fire, and it didn't melt.

"Hey," Rivela called out, "what's with that slime of yours?"

"I could tell you," Sid said, "but if we both go all out, it won't matter anyway."

 "Fine."

"You ignore small things fast. That's just like the students from... Sevenstar Academy."

 "...Who are you?"

"I used to teach there. Long ago."

Rivela raised an eyebrow. "With that scary face?"

Sid looked away. "I didn't look like this back then. Maybe. Sora and Remi used to be a little scared of me... maybe. I forget."

 "Why do you sound unsure?"

"It was a long time ago."

Sid had led the group called Key of Pharos.

This was during the time when Eudynes the Great Adventurer was still around.

That was over a hundred years ago.

So Sid was also over a hundred years old.

He had once served the God of Provisions Arzent as one of his twelve Apostles.

Even now, he was still strong.

"Wait... you were going to say something," Rivela said. "What was it?"

 "Nothing special."

 "Will you tell me someday?"

 "I will."

 "Then fine."

 The fire grew hotter.

Sid's slime grew thicker, holding firm.

"...Hey," Rivela said again. "This is strange."

"I know that sword well," Sid replied.

 "Oh?"

"It looks at the enemy's fire resistance. Then it changes the fire to break through. But if you know how to look, there are many ways to stop it."

 He smiled.

The Great Flame Sword Surtr was made 200 years ago.

 Eudynes lived 100 years ago.

No one knew everything about the Forever Adventurers, but it was likely Eudynes had seen the sword.

"Do you think the world is big or small?"

It was full of things. Full of people.

Full of fire, steel, and slime.

 And still, they met here.

"When you chase what you want to know, the world feels wide," Sid said. "That's all."

 "Were you really an adventurer?"

 "What if I was?"

"I'd want to learn more from you."

 "I'll help."

 The flames burned brighter.

 So did the slime.

* * *

"Things are heating up over there too," someone said.

"Ho ho ho... That's more than heat. That's fire," the old man laughed. "And with wooden weapons, too."

 "Hey. Old man," Ivan said.

"Your axe... Is it the same as my sword?"

Vande's Worldtree Axe moved like wind through leaves.

Ivan blocked it using the Magic Sword Dark Matter and Sacred Sword Yggdrasil.

 Two swords.

One of them, Yggdrasil, looked very much like Vande's axe.

"I got this sword from my grandfather," Vande said. "I don't know where it came from."

 "Your grandfather?"

"Yeah. I saw it myself. Eudynes gave that axe to my grandfather."

 "..."

 Ivan's eyes changed a little.

"My sword stands for a country. That axe..."

"You carry a lot of history, don't you?" Vande said. "But you're smart. Unless it's that guy... this world's boring."

"Ten years ago, my friend looked up to him. That's why they became an adventurer. We came far, thanks to all that mess."

"Sad. But I won't feel sorry for you. That path must've been fun."

"...A Demon Lord messed up our plans. But still, no regrets."

"Yep. That guy really is trash. Still trash now."

 Vande's face twitched.

"Wait, did you meet her?" Ivan asked. "Did something happen?"

"At a party," Vande said with a growl. "She squeezed lemon juice on my fried chicken. A rare kind — the kind that changes flavor with each bite!"

"...What side are you on? Lemon or no lemon?"

 "No lemon!"

 "...Got it."

Ivan started to feel that none of this mattered.

But still, somehow, it made sense.

The kind of nonsense that made you want to punch someone for real — that was exactly the kind of thing that guy would do.

* * *

The battlefield had little fear in it.

Only because all of them knew — their weapons would never break.

For adventurers, weapon strength was a serious matter.

Breaking the enemy's sword could win the fight.

Keeping your own safe meant staying alive.

But here, no one worried about that.

 Because nothing would break.

That was why they could fight this way.

 Freely. Wildly.

 And for the strong...

That kind of battlefield was nothing short of paradise.

Notes:

• Rivela - Leader of 'Muspelheim' and wielder of the 'Great Flame Sword Surt.' She is 18 years old, energetic, and a participant in the Blood Duel Cup. She earned the nickname 'Unscalable' for creating a huge wall of flames during a monster rampage.

• Vande - Known as the Abyssal Tree. Leader of the Underworld Tree, known as 'Abyssal Tree'. Their appearance is not described. They seem surprised that Horace is still alive, implying a history between them.

• Garboros - Known as the Royal Table. Captain of the Captain of the Five-Star Pirates. His appearance is not described, but he is known for his immense strength, capable of taking down powerful sea monsters alone. He is primarily interested in gourmet food and has little regard for honor or material possessions. His relationship with Horace is one of acquaintance, and he participates in the Blood Duel Cup seemingly for the experience.

• Remi - Instructor for the 1st through 3rd divisions of the Holy Knight Squad.

• Sora - Sora. Alvaro's young, androgynous-looking subordinate; his distinct trait is his cynical and laid-back attitude, often questioning plans while maintaining a carefree demeanor. Despite his youthful appearance, he’s sharp-witted and talented, though he prefers to observe and let others take the lead. His high-pitched voice and long blue hair contrast with his pragmatic mindset.

• Eudynes - Weird adventurers from a hundred years ago who were the first to understand the 'Golem Master' concept. Horace respects them but uses their story as a cautionary tale.
