Volume 5 Chapter 30-2 The People Of Kiryou's Town (Part II)
"Haku wants to become a court historian who writes important history books."
"A stone can end everything with just one throw. But a history book lasts a long time, reminding people of a leader's mistakes. It seems like a tough choice to make."
"Is this what father wants?"
"Yes, that's right. I want it. Please tell me if I'm wrong."
After saying that, Mō Etsu smiled.
"Your mother always watched over me from the side. Because she was there, I tried hard to be a good leader, someone she wouldn't be ashamed of. And when she passed away, she asked you to take her place, didn't she?"
"Yes. Haku has taken on her mother's wish."
Haku smiled like a child.
"Haku loves both father and mother very much."
"Thank you. Because you are here, I can stay humble."
"That's why I have a request for you, father."
Haku bowed to his father again.
"Please let Haku watch the martial arts tournament."
"That should be possible. But..."
"I know Kakkan Saku-sama doesn't like the idea. So, I want to watch from a hidden seat where no one can see me."
"To write about Kiryou town's history?"
"Not just that. Haku wants to write about many different things."
Haku started counting on his fingers.
"The history of Kiryou town. Stories of martial artists... I also want to write a family tree. There will be the family tree of Uncle Ro, the 'Unreachable' one. In peaceful times, I'll write about that history. In troubled times, I'll write about those struggles."
"That is your dream, Haku?"
"Yes, Father."
"You have a big dream. Maybe it's my fault you have such a dream."
Haku's mother is from a town that was destroyed in a struggle.
Many people died there, and some went missing.
Their house was burned, their bodies buried, and their family records and papers also disappeared.
There are no records left to show they ever lived.
The only proof of their existence is in the memories of those who survived.
Mō Etsu and Haku's mother chose to hold onto those memories.
The memories were full of sadness, regret, and even anger, but they never let them go.
Mō Etsu and Haku's mother carried the memories of the destroyed town, sharing and talking about them.
Even after Haku's mother passed away, they kept those memories for a long time.
Since Haku was old enough to understand, Mō Etsu told her about her mother, just as she asked.
He hid nothing.
The pain between them, the sadness, and the anger that turned into love.
Haku, who heard her father's story, also wanted to carry those memories.
That's when she started liking history books and wanted to become a court historian.
"Haku wants to write down all the events that happened in this world as official history."
Haku said firmly.
"I want to record both good and bad things without looking away. Happy stories, sad songs... I want to pass everything down to the future."
"Happy stories, and sad songs told by the people... even laments, and all that."
"Yes, father."
Haku looked at her father with a determined face.
She was blushing and her eyes were bright.
It seemed like she was eagerly waiting for her father's words.
"Understood, Haku."
Finally, Mō Etsu nodded at his daughter.
"You can go to the martial arts tournament. Write about it in your history book."
"Thank you, father."
"So your history won't call me a 'Dark and Misguided Lord,' I'll be more careful."
"Yes. By the way, father."
"What is it?"
"Haku also wants to write about the daughter of His Highness the King's younger brother. Can I meet her as an unnamed court historian?"
"That's too much."
"...Is that so?"
"Work hard, and become someone who will catch Yuuri-sama's eye."
"Haku is... fine being unknown."
Haku spoke in a soft voice.
"Historians should not be in the spotlight. Haku is happy being unknown. I'm happy as long as I can leave a record for people to understand each other..."
"Are you humble or proud? I can't tell."
"Haku is true to the meaning of her name."
Saying that, Haku picked up the brush again.
"Those who leave no name in history. Those who live a simple life, not caught up in big events. I suppose that's why... my mother named me 'Haku.'"
"Ah, that's right."
"Yes. Father."
"That's fine. I'll do my best so you can live your own life."
After patting his daughter's head, Mō Etsu stood up.
He then went back to his work to protect the town.
