Volume 3 Chapter 25 Sewer Construction
"Father Luke, it's Cain."
Cain knocked on the office door and waited outside for Luke's response. A slightly tired voice from inside said, "Come in." Then, Randolph opened the door from the inside.
"Sorry to bother you when you're busy, Father Luke."
Cain stepped into the office and greeted Luke with a bow.
"Don't worry, I was just taking a break. Randolph, can you get some fresh tea? Lydia will drink it too, right?"
Luke asked Randolph to prepare the tea and called out to Lydia, who was working on papers next to him.
A big pile of papers sat on Luke's desk, showing how busy he was. Lydia had set up a small desk next to his and was working too. Her slightly crooked glasses peeked out from the stack of papers, looking cute.
Soon, a maid brought in a tray with tea and cups, setting it up for three people. There was also a cake as a treat.
Luke asked Cain and Lydia to sit on the sofa and sat down himself with some papers. Looking a bit tired, he took a sip of tea and started talking.
"Cain, I heard about the sewer construction from Randolph. Is everything okay?"
"Yes, I've been keeping you updated. The sewer work is about to start, so I'm here to explain the changes and discuss them."
Cain handed over a sheet of paper and laid another one on the table. It showed the new and old parts of the town, along with the surrounding area. He started explaining while pointing at the map.
"First, there's a change from the original plan. We're going to dig a path that goes around the 'dry moat' in front of the new town gate. At first, we were going to build a big sewage treatment area under the gate, but we're changing that."
Cain drew a path on the map with a piece of charcoal. The path went around the dry moat and connected to a big area at the forest's edge.
"We'll use slime in the water purification area to clean the water. It will flow under the forest and connect to the river. We'll also make an entrance for the slime in the forest."
Cain drew lines from the big area to the river on the map, connecting the paths.
"This seems more detailed than the original plan. Is it okay?"
Luke looked at the sewer paths and treatment areas added to the map of the Sanroze town.
"I see. Is this the only entrance for the slime?"
Lydia asked after Luke's question.
"Yes, we've already talked about the size and route with the Maintenance Bureau and the staff. Since it's bigger than planned, we're making it deeper than we first thought."
Cain answered Luke's question.
"For the slime entrance, we've worked with the knights and the adventurers' guild. We think it's best to put the entrance in the forest to bring in the slimes efficiently."
Cain gave Lydia a prepared answer.
After that, Cain answered more questions from both of them, and the discussion ended smoothly.
"Cain, what's the matter with the discussion?"
Luke asked about the discussion.
"Thank you. For the slimes, I'd like your approval to put goblin remains and similar things into the sewer treatment area, but only once. Since the slimes will eat all the remains, I think it won't affect the water quality."
Luke thought for a moment about Cain's idea, then talked a bit with Randolph nearby.
"Understood, I approve. Go ahead, but don't overwork yourself. Don't push too hard, Cain."
Luke looked directly into Cain's eyes and spoke.
"Yes, I understand."
Cain also looked straight into Luke's eyes and responded.
"Barvish, Cain tends to overdo things quickly, so please keep an eye on him."
Lydia, standing behind Cain, spoke to Barvish.
"Understood."
Barvish nodded in front of Cain and showed his thanks.
(Does he not trust me? Well, it's said that worrying about others while they work is a sign of kindness, so I'll take it as that.)
