Volume 3 Chapter 28 Sewer Construction IV
Cain finished fixing the big sewage area using [Earth Press]. He decided to stop work for the day and go home. He closed the hole at the entrance by using [Delete] only on the top layers. Cain felt happy because everything went as he planned, but Barvish and the others were quiet, looking deep in thought.
(Huh? Did I do too much at once? Is that bad?)
Cain tried to think of something to say while watching the two.
"Welcome back, Sir Cain. How was your work?"
A guard at the new town gate called out to him.
"Yes, I'm back. The work went well, no problems."
Cain answered normally.
"That's good. Please come in. Your carriage is here."
The guard opened the way and let him inside.
"Thank you."
Cain and the others walked through the almost-finished new town gate. They got into the carriage as the guard said. The carriage bumped along the dirt road. Inside, no one talked, and only the road noise could be heard.
(Ah, I should say something.)
"Hey, Barvish. I want to tell Father Luke about today's work. What should I do?"
"Ah, yes. It's hard to explain with words. It's better if he sees it himself."
Barvish answered with a slightly worried look.
"Got it. I'll tell Randolph and check the schedule. Today, I'll just report what we did. The expansion work will start after he checks the site."
Cain felt a bit better, like a weight was gone.
The carriage went through the old town gate, moved along the stone road, and stopped in front of the mansion.
"Welcome back, Sir Cain," the maids greeted him.
"I'm home. Where is Randolph? I need to report to Father Luke."
Cain asked the maid who greeted him.
"He's probably in the study today."
The maid thought for a moment and answered.
Cain said "Thank you" and went to the study. Barvish followed.
Cain stood at the study door, knocked, and said a bit louder, "Cain." From inside, Luke said, "Come in," so Barvish opened the door.
"Sorry to bother you. I came to report today's work."
After the door opened, he reported energetically.
"...Good work. You can rest soon. Please sit and wait."
Luke's voice came from the desk full of papers.
Randolph told Cain to sit on the sofa. Then, a maid brought fragrant tea, preparing it quietly.
"Phew, sorry for the wait, Cain. No matter how much I do, it never ends. Oh, sorry. I was listening to your report."
Luke, sitting on the sofa, spoke.
"Sorry to bother you when you're tired. Since the big sewage area is done today, I wanted to report it. With Barvish's advice, could you come see the sewage area?"
Cain thanked Luke for his time and gave the completion report.
"I see. Once the sewer is in use, you can't see it anymore, right? Randolph, tell me the schedule."
Luke checked the schedule with Randolph, and the visit was set for 3 days later.
"Barvish, what's wrong? You're always calm, but you seem worried now."
Luke asked Barvish, standing behind Cain.
"Ha, yes."
Barvish looked nervously at Cain, hesitating to speak.
"Barvish, don't worry──tell Lord Luke. You don't need to be afraid of me. Say anything."
Cain told Barvish to speak.
"Yes, thank you. Sir Luke, I'll report today's events and share what I felt honestly."
Barvish started speaking a bit slowly.
"Today, Sir Cain's actions showed real skill. As a helper, I felt it was too much, but I was amazed."
Barvish bowed deeply and reported.
Hearing this, Luke and Randolph looked serious.
