Volume 3 Chapter 34 Sewer Construction X
Cain was very busy. He had extended the cobblestone paving of the main road in Shin-shi town to the 4th section. Building the sewer under the road by burying magic stones was hard work.
"If it was just normal cobblestone, I could remove it easily, but maybe I used too much magic power?"
Once, Cain turned the central stone of the road back into earth using magic, buried a magic stone, and then changed it back into stone.
"This should be the end. Doing all this work of placing magic stones at regular intervals along the old town road was probably too much at once, huh?"
He turned to check with Barvish and Gardy.
"Yes, I think he's worked a little too hard."
Barvish, looking tired, replied while shaking his head.
"Really, you've worked so much, it's shocking, Sir Cain."
Gardy, who had stopped traffic during Cain's work, agreed with Barvish.
""If you keep working like this, I'll tell Lady Lydia.""
Barvish and Gardy spoke together.
"Yes, I understand! I won't push myself anymore."
Cain stood up straight and declared.
* The work of placing magic stones in the old town road was finished. Worried, the two attendants stopped the work for about 2 days. Cain spent his time reading and relaxing, refreshing both his body and mind.
"Now, starting today, it's only underground work, so let's do our best!"
Cain and the others gathered near the bathhouse built in the mansion's backyard.
Cain placed his hand on the ground, chanted [Hole], and created a path leading underground. After descending, he placed his hand on the wall again, toward the cobblestone road.
(From here, it's the real thing. Let's quickly build the sewer just like I imagined last night!)
Cain slowly started using his magic power, increasing it step by step. Once he had enough, he pictured what he had imagined last night.
"Alright, here we go! [Create Hole]!"
When Cain chanted, the underground passage appeared exactly as he had imagined. Behind him, it was clear that Barvish and Gardy were holding deep sighs and clutching their heads.
"Sir Cain... this underground passage? No, how much of the sewer is done?"
Barvish asked Cain, sounding like he was struggling to speak.
"Um, I think it goes up to the gate of the old town. But it's not finished yet. Only the part under the main road is done, and we need to take a break and cast [Earth Press]."
Cain answered as if it were no big deal.
"Sir Cain, you should learn to hold back a little. Remember what Sir Luke said when he inspected the large space recently."
Barvish spoke to Cain like he was warning him.
"You don't need to worry so much. If you two didn't say anything, no one would believe this space was created instantly. Besides, there's no dwarf in the tavern drinking fire wine and water at the same time, right?"
Cain used a strange example, but Barvish just sighed.
"Barvish, it's better to just accept Sir Cain as he is."
Gardy said this and smiled, showing his white teeth.
After that, Cain took a week to finish the sewer in the old town. Luke and Randolph, who checked the completed sewer, were holding their heads for a while. Meanwhile, Lydia kept saying, "Cain, you're amazing," while looking at the sewer.
A few days later, Cain and the others started building the sewer in the new town. At first, they planned to do it all at once, but during the initial [Earth Scan], they found some ore in the construction site.
"Well, it seems like there's some kind of ore 50 meters ahead... but I can't tell what it is with my [Earth Scan]. I can feel magic power, so it's probably not normal ore."
Cain spoke quietly while placing his hand on the wall.
"Really, there's no time to rest, Sir Cain."
Barvish muttered, looking very tired.
"Hey, it's not my fault. It was already buried here. Someone would've found it eventually," Cain replied, like he was defending himself.
After a while, at the end of the tunnel Cain had dug, there was a large chunk of meteorite, easily over a meter in size. When Cain realized it was a meteorite, he jumped up in joy, but Barvish and Gardy were on their knees, heads lowered.
Character Notes:
Barvish - A slave dwarf with a muscular, compact physique, intended as Cain's retainer/bodyguard, brought via magical contract.
Lydia - Cain's Stepmother.
Luke - Cain's father.
