Volume 3 Chapter 36 Sewer Construction XII
After finishing the sewer system in the old and new parts of town, Cain used [Earth Press] magic everywhere. He decided not to create an exit for the treated sewage to flow into the river because the details for the [One-Way] magic seal weren't ready yet. Making another opening besides the entrance could let unwanted visitors in.
"Sir Cain, once the sewer system starts working, we won't be able to enter it anymore, right?"
Barvish mumbled while looking at the sewer, which looked like an underground maze.
"That's right. Once it's in use, the sewer will become a home for slimes."
Cain explained how the sewer system would work.
"Still, I think it's needed, but it feels like a waste to use this underground space only for sewage."
Gardy said, touching the wet walls of the sewer.
Cain listened to both of them with a confused look. Then Barvish spoke again.
"If such a big structure can be built underground, many people could live safely there. Underground, there would be no danger from monsters, and they could move around freely."
Barvish spoke as if remembering something, pausing to explain his reasons.
"That's true. They wouldn't need to pay high taxes to live in small areas with tall walls."
Gardy agreed with Barvish's idea.
"Hmm, but people get sick if they don't get sunlight, so they can't stay underground forever... but maybe they could stay there only at night."
Cain started thinking about the possibility of living underground.
"Well, let's go back up for today. There's no good food down here, anyway." "You're right," Barvish replied, and the three of them headed toward the surface.

The next day, Cain visited Luke's office to talk about the limits of the [One-Way] magic. In the office, Luke and Randolph, who looked tired, were waiting.
"Cain, I read your plan. Overall, it seems fine, but I have a few questions."
Luke started asking questions while putting Cain's plan back on the table.
"The sewer system collects rainwater, household water, and waste. Then, it uses slimes to clean the sewage so it can safely flow into the river, right?"
"Yes, that's correct."
Cain answered Luke's question.
"To make sure the sewer is only used for cleaning sewage, the entrance will only allow things that can pass through with [One-Way] magic. Is that right?"
"Yes, that's also correct."
Cain agreed with Luke's question.
"So, Cain's idea is to set up a barrier to stop people from using the sewer to hide crimes, right? The conditions from inside to outside are good. How many conditions can be set for inside to outside?"
"About 3 or 4 conditions. More might be possible, but too many could make the [One-Way] magic less effective."
"I see. Cain chose 'living creatures' and 'dead bodies' as things that can't pass through. What do you think, Randolph?"
Luke checked the conditions Cain had chosen.
"Yes, with 'living creatures,' it will stop humans and monsters from entering. With 'dead bodies,' it will stop people from hiding murder evidence. If I add something, it would be 'metal.' That would stop weapons used in crimes from being hidden."
Randolph closed his eyes, thinking, and made a suggestion.
"Hmm, with that rule, even leftover meat and bones from food won't be able to pass through..."
Luke mentioned things that couldn't pass through with the set rules.
"Father Luke, I don't think it will be a problem since the sewer isn't a trash dump. Slimes will handle the cleaning, so waste disposal should work, but I don't want the sewer to be used that way."
Cain replied with a unhappy look.
